WYOMING STATE BUSINESS DIRECTORY

GLENROCK Nature's Strong Box

Glenrock admittedly the most prosperous town of its size in Wyoming, if not in the entire west, and potentially an oil center second in importance only to Casper-has already started to realize its certain destiny. With the derricks of the Big Muddy oil field within sight from the city, this fortunate- ly placed town commands the trade from the hundreds of well paid work- Ing men who are within a few minutes' riding distance from the well stocked mercantile establishments of Glenrock. While Glenrock's greatest industry is oil its resources are by no means confined to that commodity, and these. other important assets will be dealt with later.

The Mutual Oil Company, which has operated a refinery .in Glenrock about four years, is compelled to increase its capacity in order to be able to handle its share of the rapidly increasing production of crude oil. Arrange- ments have already been made for the erection of three additional buildings, eight stills and twenty tanks, the tanks having storage capacity ranging from 1.200 to 55,000 barrels. The Standard Oil Company has recognized the importance of Glenrock as an oil center and has started the construction of a refinery adjacent to the Mutual plant. The Standard will immediately in- stall ten Burton stills, with other necessary equipment for rehandling the oil skimmed at the Mutual plant, and eventually will have at least forty stills in operation and a wax plant to give commercial value to every ele- ment of crude oil.

Coal gave birth to Glenrock years before oil made the town famous and wealthy, and though it was a modest village it ranked well with other towns of its size. Its mines have yielded steadily for several decades and just now this important industry is undergoing a revival that means a greatly in- creased production, with the consequent employment of many more men. The old Fairview mine, rich in high grade coal, which has been closed several Years, has been reopened by the Johnson Coal Co. and in the near future will be producing large quantities of coal. A guarantee of permanency to this mine has been given through the signing of contracts for the purchase of several hundred tons daily. Two other mines are in operation, supplying fuel locally at moderate prices.

In the mountains a few miles south of Glenrock is located a rich chromium mine, operated by the Ferro Alloy Co. of Denver. This mine will be operated all summer and its rich and valuable deposits hauled to Glen- rock for shipment.

A new industry just installed is a modern brick plant capable of manu- facturing large quantities of brick from excellent and plentiful material close at hand. This enterprise creates an entirely new and welcome pay roll. Oil drilling operations in the Cole Creek dome, about ten miles, north- west of town, are under way and a newly discovered and promising field just east of the city is being prospected.

Agriculture is constantly gaining in prominence and promise, sturdy grazing lands to cultivated farms. Crops of greater diversity than heretofore have been planted this year by this army of farming pioneers, the variety being expected to serve as a test of the possibilities of this virgin soil. Much home grown seed is available this year and it is expected that better results will be obtained than from the imported seed that has heretofore been used.

The stock industry, the main stay and original industry of Wyoming. has suffered much during the past year from suddenly deflated prices, but the stockmen are a sturdy, courageous lot and are setting their faces toward the problem of meeting and solving new conditions imposed upon them. The past winter one of the mildest ever known in Wyoming_brought cattle and sheep through in good flesh and with unusual vigor, Weather condi- tions for lambing this spring were favorable, with a consequent bumper yield of lambs. The range is in good condition and the stockmen have every reason to hope for a good season.
