LANDER.

One of the oldest incorporated cities in Wyom- ing, the county seat of Fremont county, the present terminus of the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad, 145 miles west of Casper, and 130 miles north of Rawlins. Lander is a beautiful residence town, lo- cated on the Popo Agie river and three other beauti- ful trout streams. Coal, gold, copper, asbestos and oil are found in abundance in this vicinity and at the present time are being mined and shipped in com- mercial quantities. There are many fine ranches and many large herds of sheep, cattle and horses tributary to the town. Lander is also the shipping and trading point for the Shoshone Indian Reserva- tion, which represents an area of nearly two million acres, four miles north of Lander. Stock raising and agriculture are the principal industries. Popu- lation 3,000. Altitude 5,350 feet. (For cattle and sheep men see the Live Stock and Wool Growers' list at Fremont county.)
