OAKLAND LITERARY AND AID SOCIETY.


Incorporated in 1875. Number of members, sixty-seven. This society is composed exclusively of colored members, and has for its object mutual improvement and social intercourse ; coupled with this also is a system of mutual benefits, which provides for a payment of three dollars per week to members during sickness, and the sum of fifty dollars for funeral expenses in case of death of any member. Meets every Monday evening in their hall adjoining Hibernian Hall, 714 Broadway.

METHODIST LITERARY SOCIETY.


This society was organized and is conducted under the auspices of the First Methodist Episcopal Church. It has now an average attendance of about one hundred. Meets weekly in the church lecture room. The especial objects are literary improvement and a general oversight of the interests of young men. The society proposes to inaugurate a series of lectures on biology during the coming summer.


SOCIETY FOR PREVENTION OF CRUELTY TO ANIMALS.


Organized 1877. Number of members, fifty. Since the organization of this society there have been several convictions for violating the State statute providing for the punishment of persons found guilty of cruelty to animals.

HOMEOPATHIC HOSPITAL SOCIETY.


Organized in 1877 for the purpose of providing for the maintenance of a hospital furnishing treatment in this particular school of medicine. Under its auspices the hospital, on the southeast corner of Twenty-first and Market streets, has been opened for the free treatment of patients. Parties desiring treatment can be admitted on application to Dr. Nichol- son, corner of Eighth and Grove streets.


MOUNTAIN VIEW CEMETERY ASSOCIATION.


Organized December 26, 1863, under the provisions of "An Act to authorize the incorporation of Rural Cemetery Associations," for the purpose of creating and maintaining a cemetery adapted in magnitude and beauty to the wants and tastes of the city. Under the fostering care of the Association, the Mountain View Cemetery has attained its pres- ent grand and beautiful proportions. The office of the Association is at the store of Mr. Edmund P. Sanford, the treasurer, southwest corner of Broadway and Tenth streets.

In addition to the foregoing there are many social societies and clubs in organization, which, although having no fixed locations, contribute materially, in some cases, to benevolent objects, and generally to the advancement of literary culture and social enjoyment in our city, chief among which may be noted : The Evangelical and Philanthropical Alli- ance Association, Mrs. Sublette, Secretary; the Authors' Club, the Gun Club, Linden Reading Club, Athens Social Club, and Elite Club, all of which are in the enjoyment of an active and vigorous life.

BUSINESS NOTICES.


One of the most extensive depots in Oakland for the supply of wood and coal is that of J. Homer Fritch, 413 Eleventh Street. His stock of foreign and domestic coals is large and amply sufficient to meet the demands of this city and vicinity. Mr. Fritch is the agent of the popu- lar Eastport Coos Bay coal, which heads the list of Coast coals for family use. There are over six hundred tons of coal per month sold by the dif- ferent dealers in this city.


Messrs. O. K. Freeman & Co., who are located on the northwest corner of Eighth and Franklin streets, are also engaged in the wood and coal trade. Their stock of foreign and domestic coals is large, and they are the sole agents for Alameda County for the celebrated Wellington coal.
