PUBLIC SCHOOLS.
The public schools of the City of Oakland are under the management of an efficient Board of Directors, and Superintendent Frederick M. Campbell, who was re-elected in March, 1878, for the third time to fill this important post. The schools are all in a high state of discipline.
The increase of the juvenile population of Oakland during the year 1877 is attested by the erection of three capacious buildings for the ac- commodation of pupils. These are the Tompkins School House, cost $14,400; Cole School House, cost $23,300 ; Lincoln Primary, cost $3,300.
The present school buildings may be classed as follows: one sixteen- room building, one twelve-room building, five eight-room buildings, three four-room buildings, three three-room buildings, besides one fourteen- room building in course of erection.
The expenses of the department for the year 1877 were as follows : salaries of teachers, $41,495.34; salaries of janitors, superintendent, etc., $9,527.03; light, water, rents, and interest, $4,169.55; furniture, $3,207.28; books and supplies, $1,822.86; fuel, $1,285.85; real estate

During the year 1877 four thousand seven hundred and fifty pupils have attended the public schools of Oakland, an increase of eight hun- dred over the number of the previous year. There has been no serious illness among the children. The buildings generally are thoroughly ven- tilated and lighted, and grounds well drained and kept clean. The physical training of the pupils is considered a great desideratum by the superintendent, and gymnastic instruction is given daily.
The following is a list of the teachers in the various public schools :
