A DIRECTORY

OF THE

TOWN OF ALAMEDA.

APRIL, 1878.

THE TOWN OF ALAMEDA is located in the northwest corner of Alameda County, upon a small peninsula of land, about two and one-half miles in length and from one-half to three-fourths mile in width, being bounded on the north by San Antonio Creek, which separates it from the City of Oakland, and upon the west and south by San Francisco Bay. The surface of the peninsula is comparatively level, sufficiently elevated to ensure easy drainage and consequently enables improvements to be made at slight cost. Like her sister city, Oakland, Alameda is the natural outgrowth of that desire which leads men of business to escape from the dust and turmoil of the city when the business of the day is over, and her admirable location, sheltered so completely from the stormy blasts of the ocean, at an early date began to attract the atten- tion of those desiring suburban residences within immediate reach of the seat of trade, and many tasty residences, with roomy and highly- ornamented grounds soon dotted the peninsula over. In 1872, the town was incorporated, since which time its progress has been steady and un- abated, during the past three years this condition has been especially marked. The number of buildings erected shows a steadily increasing ratio; transactions in real estate maintained an even pace, and prices, even during the general prostration of the past year, have been fully sustained. Of her future there can be no question; situated as she is she must ever be a favorite among our suburbs; susceptible of improve- ment at moderate expense, her lots will always attract those of limited means, and composed, as her population is, of the higher social and edu- cated classes, she will afford a delightful retreat for the learned and refined. Her church privileges and school facilities are of the most ample and are being continually extended. Two new churches are in contemplation, and a bill has just passed the present Legislature providing for the issuance of bonds to the extent of $30,000, for the erection and furnishing of two new school houses. Important street improvements are being projected and new streets opened, and additional means of inter-transit are being provided.

Communication with San Francisco is made every hour by train over Central Pacific Railroad and Oakland ferries. To these facilities will

POPULATION.

The report of the School Marshal, June 30, 1877, made the population of Alameda three thousand six hundred; the estimated increase since that date (nine months) is seven hundred ; population April, 1878, four thousand three hundred. The number of children, fifteen and under, is one thousand four hundred and thirty-eight, viz: Under five, four hundred and eighty; between fifteen and five, both inclusive, nine hun- dred and fifty-eight. The total number of buildings returned was eight hundred and nineteen; erected since July 1, 1877, two hundred and twenty-five, an addition that fully sustains the estimated increase of population during that period.

CHRIST CHURCH-EPISCOPAL.

Location, northwest corner of Oak Street and Santa Clara Avenue. Rev. G. H. Ward, Rector ; residence, south side Santa Clara Avenue, between Oak and Walnut.

The first efforts to establish this church were made in the Fall of 1867, when, through the exertions of Mr. Thomas A. Smith, who at that time was vestryman in the Church of the Advent, Brooklyn, a small congrega- tion was brought together, the Rev. Daniel Wills, of the Brooklyn Parish, officiating. The first services, also the first communion, first confirma- tion, first baptism, and first marriage ceremonies took place at the resid- ence of Mr. Smith. Subsequently the members of the Methodist Church kindly offered the use of their edifice, where services were held until a room was secured in Bowen's Building. Soon after the congregation again removed to a hall built by Mr. Smith, where they worshiped until their present church edifice was completed.

In 1870 an organization was effected and name given to the Parish, and at the same time the following gentlemen were elected officers : W. N. Meek, Senior Warden ; Eustace Trenor, Junior Warden ; R. H. Magill, Thomas A. Smith, and C. H. Dickey, Vestrymen. On account of not filing a certificate, the first permanent organization was not effected until January 14, 1871. "About this time the Rev. Sidney Wilbur was appointed Rector, who continued to officiate until July, 1873.

The church edifice was completed in September, 1873. It is a wooden structure, in the Gothic style of architecture, about twenty-six feet front by sixty-five feet deep, and cost, including furniture, $3,500. The lot upon which it stands was donated to the congregation by Mr. Thomas A. Smith. Services are held every Sunday at eleven o'clock A.M. Seats free.

The Sunday school connected with the church was organized in 1868.

METHODIST EPISCOPAL.

Location, corner Park Street and Central Avenue. Rev. H. B. Hea- cock, Pastor; residence, East side Park Street, between Central and Encinal Avenues.

This church was organized in 1853 by Rev. James McGowan, who is still a member. A lot was donated by Rev. William Taylor and Archi- bald Taylor, on Mound Street near Monroe, and the first church erected thereon in 1854, by Rev. William Deal, its first Pastor.

In 1873 the church building was moved to a new site on the corner of Park Street and Central Avenue, at an expense, including cost of lot, of $1,600. In 1875 an adjoining lot was purchased, the old building re- moved to the rear of the lot, and the present structure erected instead. During the Summer of last year the old church building was enlarged and improved, and is now used as a lecture and Sunday school room. The total cost of church property is $10,000. The Sunday school con- nected with the church was organized in 1853; average attendance, teachers and scholars, one hundred and thirty-four. Number of volumes in library, three hundred. William H. Codington, Superintendent.
