A new town on the Purgatoire, five miles below Trinidad. The terminus of the Trinidad Branch of the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad, exactly midway between Denver and Santa Fe.
The buying and shipping of wool and hides is carried on very extensively here; and it is the re-shipping point at which the vast freight of New Mexico and Arizona is transferred to teams. Stages leave daily for Santa Fe, distant 205 miles. Distance to Cucharas, 38; Pueblo, 86; Denver, 206.

The five principal mines are : the Boulder Valley, Baker, Co-operative, Rob Roy, and Stewart. The daily ship- ments in winter from Erie, are about 500 tons; in summer, 240. Between 150 and 200 men are employed. Distances: To Boul- der, 12 miles; Longmont, 9; Denver, 34 by rail, 25 by wagon.

The principal industry consists of lode and placer mines. Most notable of the latter are Clark & Smith's, at Fairplay; Pease & Freeman, on Beaver Creek, one and a-half miles dis- tant; Mills & Hodges, between the mouth of Mosquito and Buckskin Gulches. Lode mines are found on Mounts Lincoln and Bross. Principal mines, or noted mines, are the Dolly Var- den, Moose, Hiawatha, Lincoln, Elephant, Erie and Russia. Average altitude above sea level, 14,000 feet.
To the south are the Soda Springs, on Frying Pan or Colorado Gulch, and the Warm Springs on Chalk Creek, each of which have an established local reputation.
Coaches daily to Morrison, connecting with Denver, South Park & Pacific R. R. to Denver; to Colorado Springs tri-weekly; tri-weekly to Oro City, Twin Lakes, Granite and Riverside; weekly to Castello's and Canon City; every Saturday to Helena, Centreville and South Arkansas.
Distances: To Salt Works, 20 miles; Granite, 40; California Gulch, 35, by trail 20; Twin Lakes, 40; Montgomery, 12; Dud- ley, 7; Alma, 6; Quartzville, 10; Buckskin, 7; summit of Mt. Lincoln, 11 ; a good wagon road to within 400 yards of the sum- mit; South Arkansas, 60.
