"Three railroads. contending for the San Juan trade, will spur each other forward to the greatest measure of activity, and we are justified in hoping that, within two years, the whistle of the iron horse will wake the echoes of these grand old hills, and our town, so fitly named 'The Queen of the Mountains,' be linked with bands of steel to the cities by the sea."

LAKE CITY BUSINESS DIRECTORY.
-
The prosperity of the town is due in a large measure to the Silver World, a very able weekly newspaper published by Olney & Peyton. Mr. Henry C. Olney is well known to the citizens of Colorado from his long connection with the Denver News.
The town has an excellent graded school, with teachers of es- tablished reputation.
The mining section to which the town is tributary is acknowl- edged by all mining men to have no equal in the world, either in extent or in the great number of large, rich veins.
Dr. F. M. Eudlieb, the geologist of the Smithsonian Institute, who has been an extensive traveler in Europe, and is familiar with all the mountain regions of our own country, declares that the scenery of San Juan excels in grandeur and variety any that he has ever seen.
The Henson Creek road, built the past season by Garbutt, Abbott Bros. & Woodward, will be as great an object of interest to the tourist and sight-seer as the justly celebrated Canons of Boulder or Clear creek.
EDITORIAL NOTES. 1
CIVIL AND MINING ENGINEERS .- The firm of Garbutt, Ab- bott Bros. & Woodward, civil and mining engineers, chemists and metallurgists, has achieved a reputation in the San Juan country which is justly merited. The members are all men of thor- ough education for their respective departments, and all bring to their work the advantages of many years of practical experi- rence.
Their chemical and assay laboratory, their outfit of engineer- ing apparatus, and their library in both branches of their profession, have no rival west of the Mississippi. They also have the most complete cabinet of San Juan ores ever collected. In their office the principal papers of New York, Boston, Chi- cago, Denver and Pueblo are kept on file, and all strangers visiting Lake City for business or pleasure, are invited to make their office headquarters, have mail directed to their care, etc. All letters of inquiry addressed to them will receive prompt attention. See their advertisement.

188 LAKE CITY BUSINESS DIRECTORY.
"BANKING .- The Bank of Lake City, the only chartered insti- tution of the kind in San Juan, commenced business during the early part of last year. Capital, $50,000. The president and business manager, Mr. E. V. B. Hoes, for many years an execu- tive officer in an eastern national bank, has thoroughly identified himself with the interests of the county, and being amply backed by eastern capital, will undoubtedly hold the Bank of Lake City in the front rank in Southern Colorado.
HARDWARE .- R. C. Vose & Co., dealers in all kinds of hard- ware, are one of the heaviest firms in the southwest. They carry a full line of all kinds of steel and iron-ware required for the complete outfit of mines, from a pick-handle to a car truck. Carpenters and blacksmiths will find here the tools of their re- spective trades, and as complete an assortment of builders' hardware as they could obtain in Denver. The firm have ample capital, pay cash for their goods, and offer them at eastern prices with freight added.
PHOTOGRAPHY .- T. E. Barnhouse is an accomplished artist in his profession, and has been very successful at Lake City. His studio, built by himself, is thoroughly adapted to his re- quirements, and should be visited by every traveler to Lake City. They will find Mr. Barnhouse an affable and polite gentle- man, and ready to entertain them with his portfolio of stereo- scopic views of San Juan scenery, which are well worth a jour- ney of several hundred miles to see. Mr. Barnhouse and his partner, under the firm name of T. E. Barnhouse & Co., carry on an extensive business in jewelry and watch repairing.
PLANING AND SASH MILL .- One of the most successful enter- prises in Lake City is that conducted by Echlin, Routt & Co. Their mill is a credit to the town, and a source of handsome profit to themselves. It is fully equipped with all the machinery required by such an establishment in the largest city. The firm are prepared to do scroll-work, wood-turning, planing, matching and re-sawing. They make sash and doors a specialty, and keep a variety of mouldings always on hand.
