them in Black Hawk, 29; number of stamps, 810. Over 20,000 tons of freight received at the station last year. The Boston and Colorado Smelting Works (capital $500.000) and Collom Con- centration Works are located here. Black Hawk has a good system of water-works for fire protection and domestic use. There are two churches, Presbyterian and Methodist, and a good publi · school, the building for the latter costing $14,000.
The Black Hawk Foundry and Machine Shops, Silas Berten- shaw, proprietor, are among the important business enter- prises of Black Hawk. They turn out all kinds of mining and milling machinery, iron and brass castings, etc. These works have been long established, and have an extensive trade with all the mining districts. Mr. Bertenshaw, the new proprietor, has long been known to the Colorado-public as being owner of the Golden Foundry, which he still runs. His facilities for supplying mining and milling machinery, and for doing all kinds of work in his line, are unsurpassed.

handsomely furnished, is one of the chief attractions of the place. There are also good private schools. The State Uni- versity, located here, is a fine building, to the erection of which the citizens contributed over $15,000.
Church facilities are good, the Baptist, Congregational, Epis- copal, Methodist and Presbyterian societies having places of worship.
The Boulder County News, one of the best-conducted journals in Colorado, is published at this place, and has done much to stimulate leading enterprises, as well as to sound abroad the advantages of Boulder.
A good system of water-works is in operation; the fire com- panies afford ample protection to property; a street railway will soon be in operation through the main street to the Color- ado Central depot. All the wants of a live and enterprising community are rapidly supplied.
Boulder has rapidly enlarged her trade; and not only do the mining camps and districts look to this point as their supply depot, but so do also the thriving towns of Sunshine, Caribou, Nederland, Longmont, Valmont, Erie, and all the scope of coun- try thickly settled by farmers and miners for twenty miles around.
Distances : Boulder to Denver, by stage 28 miles, by railroad 44 miles; to Golden, 24; to Erie, 12; to Longmont, 15; to Caribou, 20; to Cutter's Reduction Works (Nederland), 16; to Central City, 30; to Georgetown, 42; to Julesburg, 180; to Ward, 17; to Peabody Springs, 10; to Gold Hill, 9; to Sun- shine, 5; to Salina, 6.

REAL ESTATE, LOAN, MINING AND INSURANCE AGENCY .- Boul- der gained much by the accession of such a live, progressive man as Jolin A. Ellet, Esq. He is not only a zealous and clear- headed business man, but a moving spirit in educational, social and other enterprises. His fine brick block, complete and metropolitan in appearance, is a credit to the town. Mr. Ellet has his office in this block. He is doing a large business in real estate, mining and insurance ; is possessed of ample means, and is in all respects a safe adviser.
Mr. Ellet has for sale improved and unimproved town prop- erty, first-class grain and stock farms, coal, timber and pre- cious mineral lands, as well as mines of gold and silver in all stages of development. He is also agent for the sale of the Denver Pacific Railway lands, and represents the very best class of insurance companies. He makes investments and loans money for non-residents, and assumes the care of their prop- erty in their absence. That all trusts are faithfully discharged by him, the large business he is doing is one proof, and the ex- cellent references he gives is another. See his advertisement.
HOTEL .-- The Boulder House, for years the hotel, and always enjoying a large patronage, has, during the past two years, under the direction of T. C. Brainard, Esq., been more than ever the popular resort for travelers in this part of the coun- try. Everything about the house has the air of neatness and comfort. The sleeping-rooms are well furnished, and the tables
