GEORGETOWN.
Capital of Clear Creek county, and centre of the chief silver region. Daily mails and express. W. U. telegraph line. Daily stages to Central, Idaho Springs, and to Floyd Hill, terminus of the Colorado Central R. R., Georgetown Branch; also, to Silver Plume, Empire, etc .; tri-weekly to Hot Sulphur Springs. Georgetown, in population and wealth, is the second city in Colorado. Population, 5,000.
From the assessment returns for 1875, we find that the value of mines, mills and town lots in Georgetown, is placed at $1,536,342 ; capital in merchandise, $163,885.
As an indication of the amount of business done, we would say that over fifty outtits are engaged in freighting between Floyd Hill and Georgetown, bringing to town over 10,000 tons per year.
The chief industry is mining. Here is the famous Terrible Mine, yielding a silver product worth $250,000 a year. In the vicinity are the noted mines and tunnels of Leavenworth,
Wool Growers.

During the year of 1875 this bank sold exchange amounting to $2,819,602.32. The aggregate deposits for the same time were $5,185,111.42. As a point for tourists Georgetown has great attractions. It is almost at the end of civilization on the Atlantic slope, within nine miles of the summit of the Rocky Mountains, with snow and frosts among the luxuries of midsummer.

The location and material advantages of Golden are not sur- passed anywhere in Colorado. It lies in the valley of Clear Creek, the fall of which is about sixty-five feet per mile, and the sup- ply of water is sufficient at all seasons to drive any amount of machinery. There are in the city limits, and surrounding them, immense coal mines, already extensively worked, and large deposits of fire and potter's clay, and quarries of excellent lime and building stone. These manufacturing advantages have attracted the attention of capitalists, and there are now in active operation in Golden, one paper mill, three flouring mills, two planing mills, one steam saw mill, one foundry, two smelt- ing and reduction works for ore, one fire brick and pottery

: works, three works for the manufacture of fire and common bricks, two breweries, and the car and repair shops of the Colo- rado Central Railroad.
The abundance of cheap fuel, fire-clay, and superior water- power at Golden, together with its proximity to the gold and silver districts of Gilpin, Clear Creek, and Boulder counties, make it an important point for the treatment of ores; and, appreciating this fact, the Collom Brothers erected their im- mense reduction establishment.
The business interests of Golden are well represented by the usual trades and professions. The banking house of F. E. Everett, pursuing a liberal but prudent course, has largely aided all public enterprises and improvements, and receives in turn liberal recognition and support.

EDITORIAL NOTES.
COLORADO DRESSING AND SMELTING CO .- This is one of the most gigantic enterprises that has been inaugurated in Colorado. It contemplates nothing less than the establishment of a large Dressing Works in every important mining district in Colorado, for the concentration of low grade ores, and the smelting of the enriched product at their mammoth smelting establishment in Golden. The main building of the latter, consisting of brick walls and iron roofing, covers about 20,000 square feet of ground, or nearly half an acre. All the concentrating machinery used by this company was invented and patented by Mr. John Collom, their general manager. And Mr. Collom's older ma- chines are used in most of the important mining countries of the entire world, invariably superseding all other inventions.
GOLDEN FOUNDRY AND MACHINE SHOP .- This is the pioneer iron works of Colorado. Mr Bertenshaw, the proprietor, is also owner of the well-known Black Hawk 'Foundry. He has been established in Golden some seven years. Early impressed
