Within a radius of a mile or two are many points accessible by carriage, from which most charming views may be obtained; such as Bald Mountain, Quartz Hill, head of York Gulch, etc. Good liveries and saddle horses may be obtained for these trips.

BANKING .- The card of the First National Bank of Central City, found on page 88, represents one of the most reliable banks in Colorado. The officers and directors are among the oldest and most successful business men of Gilpin county, thus guaranteeing good and safe management in all their business transactions. COLORADO SPRINGS.

County seat of El Paso county. Station on Denver & Rio Grande Railroad; Western Union Telegraph Co. Daily mails and express Stages daily to Manitou; Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays to Fairplay and South Park. Population, 2,500.

The town takes its name from numerous valuable mineral springs in the vicinity, the most important of which are located in a most beautiful glen, five miles distant, to which has been given the name of Manitou.

The business interests of Colorado Springs are represented by three well-managed and substantial banking institutions: the El Paso County, First National, and People's; two news- papers; and the various trades and professions are well filled by a wide-awake and progressive class of business men.

There are excellent public and private schools. Colorado Col- lege is located here, and fine buildings will soon be erected. A Deaf and Dumb Institute is in operation. The Presbyterians, Methodists, Episcopalians, Baptists, Congregationalists, South- ern Methodists, Cumberland Presbyterians and Unitarians have commodious church buildings.

Some idea of the growth of Colorado Springs, which is but five years old, may be gained from the following figures :

EDITORIAL NOTES.

HOTEL .- The Central Hotel, Mrs. M. M. Stephens, proprie- tress, is a neat and well-kept house, where the guest can find good accommodations at very low prices, as the advertisement elsewhere will show. Travelers should give the "Central " a trial.

MERCHANT TAILORING. - See the advertisement of Charles Stearns, on another page. He has been established in Color- ado Springs for some time, gradually increasing his stock as his increasing trade demanded, and now carries a complete line of cloths, cassimeres, and everything found in a first-class mer- chant tailoring establishment. He is prompt, pleasant to deal with, and understands his business.
