DEL NORTE BUSINESS DIRECTORY.
DEL NORTE.
. County seat of Rio Grande county, situated on the river of that name. The principal town in southwestern Colorado, and chief outfitting point for San Juan mines. Population, 1,500. Stages every other day to La Veta; tri-weekly to Baker's Park and the mines. Distant from the Summit, Ala- mosa, Telluric and Decatur gold districts south, 30 miles; the Lake silver mining district northwest, 80 miles; and 100 miles from Silverton, the heart of the great San Juan silver mines, comprising the districts of Animas, Eureka, Adams and Uncom- pahgre.
There is an abundance of pine timber within a few miles. Several saw-mills are in operation. The Rio Grande furnishes abundant water-power. The erection of reduction and refining works is talked of. Del Norte has good schools, and the citi- zens have voted $10,000 to build a public school-house. There are three church societies.
The Denver and Rio Grande Railroad will probably be extended to Del Norte during the summer of 1877. The city has made commendable progress, and most of the buildings are of a character that show that the owners have faith in the future of Del Norte. A fine new public school-house and church are among the acquisitions of the past year.
The San Juan Prospector, a well-managed weekly newspaper, Cochran & Roberts, proprietors, is doing much to help forward the growth and public interests of the town.
Distances : Fort Garland, 65 miles; Cucharas, 125; Antelope Springs, 55; Canon City, 145; Colorado Springs, via Ute Pass, 190; Wagon Wheel Gap, Sulphur Springs, 30; Pueblo, via Mosca Pass, 120; via Sangre De Christo Pass, 150; Santa Fe, 180; Lake City, 85; Denver, 227; Saguache, 35.
BANKING .- The Bank of San Juan, Daniels, Brown & Co., proprietors, stands at the head of the financial institutions of southern Colorado, and is second to none in the state. The members of the firm are successful and wealthy business men, and are also directors ih the City National and Colorado National Banks of Denver. They are among the oldest citi-

zens, well known, and of commanding influence throughout the state. The Bank of San Juan is managed with both pru- dence and liberality. It has contributed largely to the pros- perity of Del Norte, and to the development of the rich sur- rounding country. During the past year it handled almost the entire gold and silver product of the San Juan mines. It has ample facilities for doing a large business, and although the Southwest promises to grow up rapidly and greatly increase its commercial interests, yet we predict that the Bank of San Juan will always lead the way, with resources and facilities enough to do all the business that is offered, and a great deal more.
