Rev. Alonzo
hears,
I. A. M. H. Rector.
HIS SCHOOL was established A. D. 1853, in the open country, only one mile from the State House. Since then very large outlays have been made for the enlargement and improvement of the grounds and Buildings. It offers, at low rates, rare inducements to parents seeking a first-class Institution for their sons .- All its pupils become members of the Rector's family, none boarding elsewhere. The location and extensive grounds insure the quiet peculiar to the country, so desirable to stu- dents and inviting to study, while health and happiness are promoted. The limited number of pupils tends greatly to their benefit, social as well as intellectual, including paternal or special care to young or backward boys. Pupils take frequent rides and rambles, under proper supervision ; they also have the benefit of a thorough Military Drill. This establishment is warmed by Gold's very excellent Steam Heater, and furnishes warm and cold baths. Semi-annual sessions begin February 7th and August 7th ; but pupils are admitted at any time. City Cars pass the School from the Steamboat Wharf and the Railroad Station.

The New Haven Directory for 1868,
Contains about 14,000 names, being an increase of 1,200 over those of 1867. 2,400 names have been erased, and 3,423 new ones are added. The number of changes of address are 3,050 ; total number of changes, 9,323.
We have been materially assisted in the compilation of names by the gentlemanly proprietors of most of our manufacturing establish- ments, who have cheerfully furnished us the names of their employees. We return our grateful acknowledgments.
During the past year the number of new buildings erected have been greater than for several preceding years. Among the number, the city has erected a large and beautiful school building-the "Skinner School," named in honor of the late HON. AARON N. SKINNER, located at the corner of State and Summer streets. This school is designed to accommodate 600 pupils, having fifty seats in each of the rooms, of which there are twelve.
" The main building is 70 by 88 feet, and two stories high. Each story is divided into six rooms, with a hall ten feet wide in the centre. There is a projection in front 5 by 22 feet, which, besides extending the hall, gives closets on each side for teachers' clothing and for storing books, maps, &c. In the rear there is an addition 16 by 36 feet, which, besides a recitation-room connected with the principal's room, con- tains the stairs for the pupils, which being separated from the main building by a wall, will, in case of fire, be the last to be destroyed. The three rooms on each side of the hall are connected by door-ways, leaving a passage-way round the entire.building, near the outer wall. This plan was adopted for safety in case of fire."
Two church buildings have been erected during the past year. We append the description of each :
The West Congregational Church is an English Gothic structure, built of Naugatuck Granite, at a cost of $30,000. It has a main corner tower and spire 125 feet high, with small offset tower on the opposite corner. The edifice is 50x90 feet, with a side wing 28x35 feet, for a chapel ; with a room above for receptions, and for the Ladies' Society. The chapel is so arranged with sliding doors that it can be opened into the audience room, when it is needed. In its architectural grace and beauty of finish, it is one of the most pleasing buildings in the city. The architect is Mr. R. G. Russell, of this city.
The neat Gothic edifice erected for the First German Baptist Church, situated at the corner of George and Broad streets, is built mainly of
