The great object of the School is mental and moral culture in a preparation for College and for Business. Only a small part of the play time is devoted to Military Training ; and it is by this use of
hours, commonly worse than wasted, that the School has acquired any reputation as a Military Institution.
The regular course in the department preparatory to Yale College, occupies four years ; but full opportunity is allowed to those who can prepare more rapidly.
Parents will find, in the instruction given in Military Drilling, Gym- nastics, Swimming, etc., and in the ample grounds for out-door games, under careful supervision, just the advantages for physical training and vigor, which boys in cities need.

ADMISSION OF SCHOLARS.
The Public Schools are free only to children whose parents or guar- dians reside in the District.
The regular time for the admission of Scholars into the Public Schools is at the beginning of the School year, in May.
After the beginning of the school year, any applicants for admission may apply to the Clerk of the District, who will give a card of admis- sion to some particular school ; and in case there is no vacancy in the proper grade of that school, the applicant's name will be entered by the Principal upon a Register of applications, and the scholars whose names are thus recorded will be entitled to seats, (as vacancies occur,) according to the order of time in which they applied.
Inquiries about the Public Schools may be made every morning, from 8 to 9 o'clock, during term time, and at the close of the morning session of the schools, at the office of the Board of Education, No. 14 City Hall, Church street.
