POLICE DEPARTMENT.
Police Office, City Hall, entrance south gateway, 159 Church-st. By an act of the Legislature, passed at its May Session, 1862, the municipal police of New Haven are under the control of a board of six commissioners, appointed by the Common Council. The Police corps are limited to twenty-five policemen, designated as "ordinary," and fifteen entitled "supernumerary," who are appointed by the Commissioners. The Commissioners and the Policemen are appointed for three years from the second Monday in June of the year in which they are appointed ; the places of two of the former being vacated each year. The terms of service of the po- licemen do not form a regular series like those of the Commissioners.
