Extracts from City By-Laws.


Fire Marshal.


From a City By-Law passed by the Common Council, May 15, 1868, regarding the duties of the Fire Marshal, we extract the following :


SEC. 2. It shall be the duty of the Fire Marshal to examine, during the year, all the fire-places, stoves, chimneys, heating and cooking apparatus, and pipes connected therewith, of all houses, out-houses and buildings throughout said city; also, all places for depositing ashes, and shall order that any fire-place, stove, stove- pipe, chimney, heating and cooking apparatus, or place of deposit- ing ashes be repaired, whenever he shall deem the same to be de- fective or unfit.


All orders in respect to any of the particulars in this section men- tioned, shall be given in the manner following, viz :- The Fire Marshal shall specify in writing the thing to be done, and the time within which the order must be complied with, and shall leave a true copy of said order in the hands of or at the place of abode of the person upon whom said order is made; and if any person upon whom said order is made shall neglect or refuse to obey such order within the time specified and allowed as aforesaid, such person shall forfeit and pay the sum of four dollars, and shall also forfeit and pay the further sum of two dollars for each and every week there- after that such neglect or refusal shall continue.
