INTRODUCTORY.
As in many preceding years, New Haven in the past year has prospered, though not as greatly so, perhaps, as in some years immediately preceding, owing to the influence of the business depression which has existed for months past throughout the country, the depression causing a stringency in money matters, and a cessation, or partial cessation of labor in many of our manufactories, and the effects of which are still felt in a degree. Not- withstanding this, however, there has been much advancement in actual wealth, and in the development of humane, charitable, educational and religious interests.
The foundations are being laid at the corner of College and Elm streets, on the old College grounds, near where old Divinity Hall stood, and per- haps actually upon its site, for a new Chapel, one which shall meet the needs of Yale at the present day. Departs then the old Chapel, whose high-backed, inconvenient seats, ancient box like pulpit, and limited accom- modations, are vividly remembered by so many sons and feminine friends of Yale, and around which are centered tender and sacred recollections and associations as may well be imagined. The new Chapel will be built of Jersey stone, similar, we understand, to the material of Durfee, with ornament- al trimmings of Worthington (Ohio), stone, and of blue stone from Malden, N. Y., with foundations of red sandstone from the quarries in our neighbor- ing town of East Haven, and will front inward, in accordance with the University plan. It will join Farnam Hall on the south and Durfee on the west, an archway twenty-five feet wide to adjoin Durfee and afford passage to the College Green. The edifice will be in length one hundred and twenty- five feet, or with archway one hundred and fifty feet; height to apex of roof eighty feet. There will be a gallery over the vestibule at the west end and a similar gallery in each transept, with seating accommodations in the galleries for three hundred and fifty. Over the archway will be a hand- some room for religious meetings of students. The seating capacity of the Chapel proper will be not less than twelve hundred. It is quite probable that the structure will be adorned with elegant memorial windows, com- memorative of distinguished graduates or benefactors of Yale. The in- terior will be handsomely embellished, and the whole cost will not be less than one hundred and twenty thousand dollars.

INTRODUCTORY.
ment of Yale, a counterpart in architectural design and imposing appear- ance to the also new structure of the same department on the corner of College and Elm, (opposite where the Chapel is to stand), is fast approach- ing completion, the exterior walls and roof being finished and the interior work being now well advanced. This fine structure, an additional ornament to Yale and to the city, is another evidence of the great progress achieved in this department of Yale of late years. At the Marquand Chapel per- taining to this department were delivered, recently, a series of lectures to the theological students by Henry Ward Beecher, whose eminent talent has been secured by Yale in its didactic work in this department, in addition to other eminent talent engaged recently in this and other departments.
Yale's boating interests have received a decided impetus in the past year, in the brilliant victory achieved by Yale over Harvard and other competit- ors in the exciting college regatta of last fall in Massachusetts waters, under the leadership of Captain Cook. A new boat house is to be erected at a cost, with land and driving of piles, of $16,500, upon a most approved plan, based upon observations made by Captain Cook in a visit paid the boating institutions of English Universities, and friends have within a few months contributed over 811,000 toward the work; and more is pledged. The new house will be located at the eastern end of Chapel Street Bridge, over Mill river, and will be a vast improvement over the old boat house which was, however, intended only for temporary purposes.
Fair Haven, the Seventh Ward, has a new and commodious school build- ing, erected in the last few months, and now in progress of completion internally. It is to be known as the Woolsey School, and has a large num- ber of rooms well finished and carefully arranged with reference to conve- nience and ventilation, and the building vies with any school structure in the city in size and handsome exterior. Its dimensions are seventy feet wide by seventy-two feet in length, and three stories high, the rooms with high ceilings. The cost of the work will be about $45,000.
. A new educational interest that promises valuable results both to the city and young men, is the National Business College, re-opened a little over a year ago, and occupying extensive accommodations in the splendid building of the American Life and Trust Company, facing the Public Square. It affords instruction in all that pertains to fitting young men for positions in mercantile or manufacturing firms, or for business life generally, and has five departments entitled respectively, Theoretical, Practical, Penmanship, Telegraphic, and Modern Languages departments. The Penmanship and Telegraphic departments, recently added, are already in successful opera- tion, as is the entire college, under the superintendence of Chas. R. Wells, Esq., President of the institution. One hundred and twenty-five students are in attendance, a large part of whom come from other states in the Union

and some from foreign countries; and a few of the pupils, particularly in the Penmanship and Telegraphic departments, are ladies.
St. Paul's Church has received a general change in the past year which has added strikingly to the beauty of its interior, and an addition or wing two stories high, has also been erected adjoining the church on the east, which gives the church a parish and rector's room, an infant class room, and other accommodations. The chancel has, furthermore, been enlarged and artistically adorned, and the chancel walls and ceiling, and the ceiling and walls of the entire church have been painted in pleasing and harmonious colors, giving a rich effect; the entire church has been re-seated and sup- plied with elegan gas fixtures, and the chancel with elegant new furniture and illuminated panels with scripture texts, while a number of rich memorial windows have been set in, including two in the chancel walls ; and more are to be added, till the church is fully adorned. The entire ex_ pense of this improvement will not fall short of $30,000.
Immediately adjoining St. Paul's, a fine residence has been constructed by D. Goffe Phipps, Esq., Secretary of the New Haven Water Company, at a cost of not less than $30,000. A new brick block of several houses, furnish. ed with modern improvements throughout, has been completed in the past year on Olive street, next above the former residence of Edwin Marble, Esq. A fine new substantial building, five stories high, of handsome appearance externally and internally, and containing two fine stores, has been erected on Chapel street, next below the Fosters' carpet store, by Mrs. George H. Beecher, one of the heirs of the late Rev. Mr. Garfield. Another fine build- ing, similar in appearance, has been erected on State street, near Chapel, by Rev. Nathaniel L. Garfield, also an heir of the same estate; it coctains also two stores, one of which has been fitted up by A. Foote & Co., fish and oyster dealers, and made conspicuously elegant in appearance with a pro- fusion of marble counters, fancy and ornamental wood-work decorations ; handsome office and other stylish improvements. The other store is very attractively fitted up and occupied by M. Kahn, cigar dealer.
