By an act of the Legislature, passed at its May session, 1869, the municipal police of New Haven are under the control of a board of four commissioners, appointed by the Court of Common Conncil. The police corps is limited to eighty-five policemen, designated as "patrolmen," and fifteen entitled "supernu- merary," who are appointed by the Commis- sioners. The Commissioners are appointed for two years from July 15th of each year in which they are appointed ; the places of two of the former being vacated each year.
