BENHAM'S NEW HAVEN CITY DIRECTORY.
OLD TIMES IN NEW HAVEN.
Interesting Paper by the Hon. James F. Babcock. His Recol- lections of New Haven.
The meeting of the New Haven Colony Historical Society last evening, at Loomis' Temple of Music, was a specially interesting one and was largely attended, as it was known the Hon. James F. Babcock would read a paper upon his recollections of New Haven. The wealth and cultivation of the city was well represented, and ladies were attentive listeners.
Henry White introduced Mr. Babcock, who then proceeded to read his address. He remembered our city when it was but a village in all but name; when it had less than one-tenth part of its present population, and when that population dwelt mostly on the limits of its original nine squares. There were then no railroads, horse or steam, no telegraph, no steamboats, and no daily press. It was then comparatively isolated from the rest of the world, and it was a great thing to go to New York or Boston. Packets ran to New York. Mayor Luther Bradley's cream colored or pumpkin and milk span, and honest Elihu Meyers' bays, did the business of carrying passengers to the packets. The sloops Huntress, Capt. Beecher, and the Paragon, Capt. Rowe, were then as noted to New Haveners as are the Cunard steam- ships now among ocean steamers. The captains were men of note in our community. The voyages to New York were tedious and tiresome. The first steamboat which arrived was the Fulton, commanded by Capt Elihu S. Bunker She anchored in front of the old Pavilion, in the spring of 1815. The crowd that gathered to see her was large for New Haven. One re- marked the vessel would in a storm go to the bottom. John Fitch, of Connecticut, was the real inventor of the steamboat. (Applause). Fulton

COL. JAMES F. BABCOCK,
Dear Sir :- Universal interest was manifested by our fellow-citizens in your able address before the New Haven Colony Historical Society, in February, 1873, regarding old times in New Haven, and I would be glad to publish it entire in my forthcoming City Directory. But for reasons of your own, you Have heretofore doubted the expediency of making such use of it. There was, however, a brief synopsis of the a idress published in the Journal and Courier, of this city, soon after its delivery. I will avai, myself of that, if you have no objections, and will correct any mistakes in the print, if you notice any.
By complying with this request, you will much oblige,
Yours, very respectfully,
J. H. BENHAM.
NEW HAVEN, CONN., May 4th, 1878.
J. H. BENRAM, EsQ.,
Dear Sir :- The address to which you refer had passed out of my mind as a thing of the past, and I fear you give it more importance than it warrants. The newspaper report, to which you refer, is already public property, and I have no control of it. Yet I greatly up- preciate the courtesy that prompted your request for my consent to publish in your valuable Directory the synopsis ; and I agree that you may make such use of it as you please. If I observe any errors in the report, I will correct them, and send you the document.
Truly yours,
JAS. F. BABCOCK.
used the brains Fitch has given to the work. Fulton proved an able manager. Fitch procured his patent as early as 1788, while Fulton was learning the art of painting in Europe under Benjamin West. Fitch could not procure capital enough to complete his designs. The people declared him insane; but he said " the time will come when some more powerful man will get fame and riches from my invention; but nobody will now believe that poor John Fitch can do any thing worthy of attention." Fitch was buried at his request, on the banks of the Ohio, that "the music of the steam engine might soothe his spirit." On the corner of Church and Court streets was the tavern where the notables gathered and the news of the day was discussed. The project of a railroad from New Haven to Hartford was then discussed and denounced, and James Brewster, who prominently advocated it, was declared a visionary and a wild enthusiast. They argued that all the passengers who then went by stage would not give the railroad enough patronage. I subscribed four hundred dollars of my little means to this enterprise. Hartford men in a few years got away my little stock, as they did that of hundreds of other New Haven men, at about half its cost, and soon obtained possession of the road, which they have kept ever since. They are always smart up there, and continue so down to this time. When- ever the Hartford bell rings, all parties, sects, cliques and clans suspend their controversies and rush as one man to the rescue of their beloved city. I find no fanlt with this, but on the whole I like the Hartford people " very much," especially their love of "their altars and their fires, and the green graves of their sires," and all that sort of thing :- and if we are not com- petent by this time to take care of our own interests, we should step aside and let them do it for us, for I repeat, they are a smart people.
