INTRODUCTORY.

It is with a great deal of satisfaction 'that the publishers of the Des Moines City Directory this year present to the public . their second annual volume for this city. 'This satisfaction, top, is one that may be 'shared by the general public, for it arises from the larger and better work the pub: lishers have been able to do, lowing to growing familiarity with the city, the result being to make the Directory better, more accurate, and more complete than last year, and therefore more valuable to its subscribers and all others who may have occasion to consult its pages. There are many improvements in this year's book in the manner of arranging the col- lated information that will tend to simplify and therefore expedite the task of finding a desired name or other information. It is, of course, our aim to adopt from time to time such improvements as suggest themselves, to the end that the Des Moines City Directory shall hold its place in the front rank of such publications throughout the United States.

Increase of Population.

So much for the Directory. | When one turns from the book to a contemplation of the city of Des Moines, of whose busy pop: ulation and diversified interests the Direc- tory is, as it were, a condensed reflection, and attempts in a few short pages to give a review of its business and people, there is such an embarrassment of riches in the way bf material that he is apt to hesitate in the matter of choice.

One of the most gratifying things to the people of this city is its steady and healthy growth in population. In many cities, ho- tably in the West, there have arisen what have been denominated "booms"'+ periods of unnatural and therefore undesirable ac- tivity in all branches of business. "boom " times and towns real estate values rise to figures which would be amusing to the thoughtful observer were it not for the calamitous results that are sure to follow such feverish inflation. ; During the preva. lence of the craze, owners of lots are. mil- lionaires; business blocks are built for

which there are none but prospective ten- ants ; houses are erected for people who mever come to occupy them; the " boom " begins to wane, the " bottom drops out " of the real estate market; prices sag in all lines, and the city wakes from its wild de- lirium, like a drunken man from a frenzy, to find itself weakened and enervated, and its prospects and property seriously im- paired. When a " boom " once strikes a town it always leaves its mark, and it takes years to get back on a solid footing.

Des Moines, fortunately, has never taken kindly to " booms " or " boom " methods. Its citizens and business men, as a class, are solid, sensible, and conservative, always looking to see that whatever may be done in the way of improvement shall be of a permanent character and the best possible thing to be done at the time.

The site of Des Moines was pocupied on May 9, 1843, by the United States govern - ment as a military post. February. 3, 1856, the then town, of Fort Des Moines was incorporated as a city under its pres- ent name, and the same year the seat of State government was transferred here from Iowa City. From that time on the progress of the city has been steady and substantial. Its population at the date of removal of the State capital was about 2,000; in 1860, at the breaking out of the " civil war, it was 3,695; in 1870, 12,055; in 1880, 22,696; in 1890, 53,406; in 1892, 68,574; an increase over 1890 of 15,078; while this year, by an actual. house- to-house census taken in connection with the regular canvass for the City Directory, the population of Des Moines is shown to be 75,846, an increase over last year of 7,272. This is a showing of solld growth that may well challenge the admiration of all except envious and chagrined rivals, and one well calculated to till our citizens with pride and satisfaction.

Location and Resources.

In the matter of location, Des Moines is peculiarly fortunate. Lying on the direct, line of travel between Chicago and West- ern points, with no other large cities near

enough to overshadow it, it enjoys an ex- tensive trade. Its natural resources are such as augur well for its future and con- tinued prosperity. Prominent among these Are coal and clay. The former is found in prodigal abundance and many varieties, from the best range to the common brands. Good soft coal is mined within the city limits and delivered to the consumer at a moderate price, while slack for firing dan be obtained at an average price of fifty cents per ton. With such cheap fuel, and the unequaled shipping facilities afforded by its numerous railways, it is but natural that Des Moines is fast becoming a city of manufacturing enterprises. Splendid clay for brick making is also found in this vicinity, and pipe and drain tile and all sorts of pottery ware are also turned out from native clay.

The agricultural region surrounding the city is unsurpassed in fertility. That a rich farming country is essential to the solid and continued growth of a city is too well understood to require argument here, and Des Moines has this prime factor of growth in a most marked degree. Ly- ing all around it are as good farms as ever "laid out of doors," tojadopt a Hoosier- ism. Bountiful crops reward the husband- man's toil, pouring a golden stream of grain into the warehouses in exchange for a golden stream from the banks. Great market gardens are also scattered around the city, the rich black soil bringing forth table vegetables and dainties in prodigal profusion.

Public Conveniences.

Des Moines has probably the finest and . best equipped street car service in the West. The numerous lines reach out to and pierce all the suburban portions of the city and spread a net-like web of 4 tracks through the business part of town. The numerous lines concentrate at the transfer station in the center of the city, and the transfer system is such that one may ride from the extreme north-to;south or east-to-west limits of the city for one fare The rolling stock on these lines is in the main of sumptuous quality, and what little remains of the old material |with which the lines were run when the pres- Pent management assumed control is fast ..

being replaced by new and modern equip- ment. If there is anyone to whom the citizens of Des Moines owe a debt of grati- tude, it is Jefferson S. Polk, President of the Des Moines Street Railroad Company, and George B. Hippe, his able general manager.

The Des Moines Water Works are also of first-class quality, furnishing an abund- ance of pure, clear water. Since the loca-o tion of Valley Junction upon the Raccoon River a few miles west of Des Moines, and higher up on the river from which this city draws its water supply, a movement has been started to change the location of the water supply, and build new and larger works. The water supply has, how -. ever, been satisfactory up to the present time, and the works will compare favor- ably with those of any other city of like size.

While not strictly belonging under this) head, we wish here to mention the railways that pass through or' start. from Des Moines. At present these comprise about fifteen lines, radiating in all directions, af- fording the amplest shipping facilities to our manufacturing and business interests, the legislation of the General Assembly during the past few years on this subject having tended to equalize freight charges, and prevent unjust and burdensome dis- criminations. With a moderate freight tariff our business men are enabled to reach out into adjacent territory, and have built up a fine wholesale trade with sur- rounding towns.

The Des Moines Union Railway is an enterprise owned by Des Moines people, and is one of the busiest and most profit- able lines in the city, owning good rolling stock and a number of miles of switching track.

Public and Private Buildings,,

Des Moines is graced by a large number of handsome and substantial buildings, chief among them, of course, being the $3,000,000 State Capitol, which stands .on a commanding eminence on the east side of the river. The building is surrounded by extensive grounds, beautifully adorned and handsomely laid out, and with its stately proportions, handsome lawns, and sparkling fountains, beautiful flowers and

smooth walks, is a pleasant place to linger on a summer evening.

-.

The United States Government Building at Fifth 'street and Court avenue is also a fine building of white stone, substantially' erected, and contains the Postoffice and the United States Courts, Weather Service Bureau, and Internal Revenue offices. The Postoffice Department has also estab- lished branches on the East Side and at Highland Park, designated respectively as Stations A and B. 1

The new City Hall at the corner of Second street and Grand avenue, of the building of which mention was made in last year's Directory, is now completed, and is occupied by the police and fire de- partment, the other city officers being in · the old City Hall just south of the new structure. The new building is an elegant one, finished in fine style. The fire de- partment occupies the north part of the north half of the building, its offices, ap- · paratus and stables on the first floor, the sleeping 'rooms of the firemen on the second, and everything is kept scrupu- lously neat and clean, and the firemen take great pride in showing visitors over the premises. The police department offices and court room are on the first floor of the south half, with a large drill and wardrobe room, and the city jailor's apartments on the second, while the jail cells are in the half basement under the southeast corner of the building. The new City Hall ista good and substantial improvement; and one that has long been needed.

Among the more prominent of the pri- vate structures is the new Equitable Build- ling at Sixth avenue and Locust street, Ja fine fire-proof building eight stories high, equipped with its own electric light plant and all the latest and most modern con- veniences.

The Iowa Loan and Trust Company's Building on Fifth street. was one of the earliest of the modern office blocks, and, like the company that erected it, is of enduring character. The new Youngerman Block is a handsome and spacious eight story structure, handsomely. fitted and convenient, and a veritable hive of offices. The Clapp Block is so familiar to our citizens that more than to mention its name were a work of superogation. The Harbach Building on Walnut is an-

other structure that stands as a monument to the business ability of its owner, who occupies it entire. with His own stock of goods. The Harris-Emery Building on Seventh and Walnut is one of those mod- ern department stores that have sprung up in the West in late years, and is a hand- some and pleasing structure six stories high. Directly west, across the street, stands the Masonic | Temple, erected by that patriarchal order which dates' its birth back thousands of years, the build- ing being largely devoted to. office pur- poses. . The great dry goods house of Younker Bros. also own and occupy a handsome building on Walnut, between Fifth street and Sixth avenue. There is. also a large number of other fine business blocks, but space forbids any further refer- ence to them here.

Des Moines has two fine opera houses, The Grand and Foster's, both on the west side of the river. The Capital City Opera House, on the East Side, burned down some time ago and has not been rebuilt.' In the way of hotels, this city is well sup- plied. Among them may be mentioned the Savery, the Kirkwood, the Aborn, the Sabin, the Goldstone (east side). the Morgan, and the Login, beside a large number of less pretentious yet comfortable hostelries that afford good entertainment at reasonable cost: Among other build- ings of semi-public character are the Y. M. C. A, in which is located the City Library; the Des Moines Club House, The Iliad apartment house at 'Eighth and Walnut' streets, and various other buildings. The - Drake. Sanitarium, located just north of the State Fair Grounds in the east portion of the city, deserves special mention. It is

a large brick structure, fitted up for the accommodation of patients who come to be cured of divers ailments by the efficacious "mineral water which gushes forth from the earth at this point and is pronounced superior even to the celebrated Colfax springs, The building is fitted up in a most elaborate and modern manner, and no better resort can be found in the West than the Drake Sanitarium.

Churches, Schools, and Colleges.

Comparatively speaking, Des Moines is the Brooklyn of the West in the matter of churches. On every hand stand fine

church buildings, many of them elegant edifices of stone and brick, sumptuously furnished and elaborately decorated, with handsome pews, pulpits and chancels, the rich stained glass windows throwing a mel- low light over the interiors, lending a sub- A)dued and softening effect. The churches are so grouped that the various street car lines run by the very doors of many of them, thus enabling all to attend divine worship with comfort and convenience.

The public school system of Des Moines is of the very best. The school buildings are numerous and costly, supplied with all needful modern apparatus, and managed by trained and efficient educators, the teachers largely being ladies, as experience ¡has demonstrated that woman is especially adapted to this class of work.

Supplementing the public school system are the various colleges, industrial, and high schools of the city, affording ample facilities for the procurement of a com- plete and finished education. The pros- perity and safety of a people depend upon , the intelligence and enlightenment of its individual members, and certainly in this city, with its ample facilities for obtaining an education, there should be no cause for illiteracy, and it is with great pleasure that we can say there is but little of this unde- sirable lack within our borders.

Prospective Improvements.

During the past year many improve- ments have been carried to perfection, but the present and coming year will see many others. Prominent among those "on the card " for this season is the repaving of the streets in the business portion of the city, something that was greatly needed. Larger water mains are being put down in the streets as this year's Directory goes to press, and the work of paving will, unless prevented by unforeseen circumstances, be finished before cold weather sets in.

.

Among the prospective improvements are the Street Car Depot. the new Audi- torium, The Plaza Apartment House, and a number of other enterprises which are not, as yet, sufficiently advanced to admit of placing before the public. Numerous ex- tensions of the street car linesare also un- der consideration, and of these it may be said that the public may depend upon the
