Company C, of the Ninth, was reeraited in Goneseo and Com bridge, Ill. and vicinity mainly by John S. Bucklos and Frances HI. MeArthur. The full number desired was make up in les then a month, and an election was held at Genoso on the evergle of September 15. 15st. John S. Buckles was charged ypb . Captain. Charles W. Blakemore. First Lientenant, and Fritters H. MeArthur. Second Lieutenant, and the company immediately took the cars for Chicago, arriving in camp on the morning of September 19. 1861, and mastered into the service the stur day for :hier voir- or Mering the war.

equal of any. and their record during the whole period of which they were soldiers was that of brave and patriotic men, many of them remaining in the service as veterans, and patiently and faith- fully performing every duty.


In all the arduous campaigns of the regiment Company ( was to be found. as also in many of the smaller affen- in which as good soldiers they showed themselves always to be doped to the occasion. In this company also many changes were made. either by resignation or promotion, and the new men who came prominently to the front reflected still higher hover aper the record of Company C.


The number that mastered in originally was ninety two, and the whole number belonging to the company was two hundred.

John S. Backles was born in Miand county Ohio, June 19, 10: 31 the breaking out of the war, was a hover, having a well chablisled practice in his profession at Cambridge. J., of which place he had been a resident for muy years. During the summer of Isol he arranged in Business in sucha flower that he could leave, and started in to recruit & company for the service of Vi country. Charles W. Blakemore enlisted at Geneseo. Il .. September. Hol in the company that became Company C. of the Ninth Ilinet Cavalry.


At the election, September 19th he was selected iple First Lieutenant of How company.


He had served in the Moviean War in Company 1, Fourth Chio Volunteer, and his military experience was valuable to his con pany.

Francis H. MeArthur enlisted September 10, Jabl, at Gelesen, Il. antalited largely in recruiting men for Con piny C. Ninth Hibis Cavalry. At the election of officers he was chosen Second Lieutenant of the company, and rendered into service September 19, 1851 ; he was promoted captain september 20, 259, 99 served as a gallant officer until the copination of le Jerneof - rvi.


Captain McArthur was a most excellent ofere, and was much Fied by all. he was in many of the engagements and battles of the Ninth, and at Forsten and Tupelo, Miss .. in July, 1-04, was compiled for the gallery vil which he led his company in the thickest of the light, and the next day. Jak; You'll risburg, was struck by a fragment of shell, receiving a coken fol papeles wound in the leg. He was then sent to the hosplod at Memphis, and luer nevin ing a furlough, he spent some thin at his hothe in Ilinois.

Lientenant Harding was always ready for duty, and was with the regiment in all its important battles during the war. His address, in 1957, was Mason, Iowa.

Lieutenant Petteys was a faithful, good soldier, and most constantly ou duty during the whole of his more than four years of service.

While waiting for his discharge paper, and pay in Springfield, Ill. Le secured employment in a jewelry store, and in the fall of 1247, opened har ine's on his own account at Mason City, Il., where he has carried of the jewchy basi- ness for the past twenty-one years with several "ups and downs," having Uren robbed twice, and barned out the sanh number of times. However, he hos kept moving right along, and is now doing a good business, and highly respected & a tuan and public spirited citizen in the community in which he lives.
