COMPANY F.


Company F was mainly made up of Chicago men, having been recruited by Bernard F. Stampotiski, Marland L. Perkins and Dwight S. Heald, and come to camp in the only part of October, 1561.


This company's first officers were the three gentlemen named above, but it was not long before several changes were made. Lieutenant Heald resigned November 7, and Captain Stampati. ski was mustered out May 29, 1861, before the regiment had really seen any active service. Lieutenant Perkins was prompted Captain and Sergeant E. G. Butler, Second Lieutenant.


This company was now certainly fortunato in the officers over them, and during the entire servi parted the whites to be of the stuff that good soldiers were made of, always ready and was ious to come to the front and perform not only their duty but more than that.


In the summer of 1862 the regiment bad two twelve-pound brass howitzers assigned to their use, and as Lieutenant Batter had had experience in the regular army as an artillerist, a detail mostly from Company I was made, and these two gans were placed in charge of Company F, and later on in the service to more guns were assigned to the Ninth, and kept company with the first.


Company F took great pride in their artillery, and would have felt their loss keenly had they ever been obliged to Jeste them in the hands of the enemy. In many a hard Togol; butto

in many a gallant charge from the enemy, the brave mea who manned these guns with their supporting companies performed deeds of heroic daring to save their " pets " from capture.


Company F mustered into service October 7. 1961. with a membership of ninety -four, total number oflisted during the war 207, many of whom were veterans of Comemy F.


SKETCH OF CAPTAIN STAMPOPESKI.


Bernard A. Stampoilski was an old resident of Chicago at the breaking co: of the war.


In the summer of 1861 he in company with others reornited a company of men from Chicago and vicinity, which afterwald became a part of the Night. Illinois Cavahy, which was known & Company I'.


Captain Stampoffski had been a volunteer in the Louisiana Volunteers in the Florida War, also served in the Second United States Draguent in the Me- ican War, and was at the battles of Palo Alto and Posta de la Palma.


He was a very strict disciplimirian, and the command " Wollensich to the rear, column march" was often heard with more of dried than pensare by his company T.


The Captain organized and diligently drilled his company, and seminol with the regiment till May 20, 1862. when he was masterd off of the service then returned to Chicago, Il., where he was engaged in business till His death.


SKETCH OF CAPTAIN PERKINS.


Marland Ja. Perkins was born in Tazewell conaty, IP., May 31 15, attended Jubille College in Peoria, and later read law with the firm of Barker & Hisult, of Chicago.


In the summer of 1961 be with his his Gery, ingituoi and periodic dispo- sition was eager to join the kinks of the defenders of his country aled salmon ! . In the early days of 1: 03, at an election for a Majorship in the regiment, Cape tain Perkins was almost unanimously elected by his brother officer to be Major. but as he was not the Senior Captain, another genthe man was the reciph at of thu honor.

SKETCH OF CAPTAIN NIEMEYER.


Frederick C. Niemeyer enlisted in the Ninth Illinois Cavalry, Company I', September 3, 1861, and re-enlisted as a veteran, and was promoted Sergeant January 1. 1864, and June 20 was again promoted to be Second Lieutenant, and again on the 16th of October, 1861, was promoted and commissioned Captain of Company E', with whom he had served well ard faithfully all these years.


He was a brave and faithful soldier, and gained the affection and respect of his comrades, and the officers of the regin.ent.


In the Shoal Creek campaign he was active and gallant and showed in the management of his company good military ability, and in the front that he wos a brave and skillful officer. He was with the regiment for over four years, always prompt, brave and efficient in all the battles and engagements in which hi company took part.


He died while in the service at Tuscaloosa, Ala., Sepicinter 21, 1805.


SKETCH OF LIEUTENANT BUTLER.


Erastus G. Butler enlisted in Company F. Ninth Ilinois Covidhry. September 11, 1861, and was appointed Sergeant, and on the resignation of Lieutenant Heald was commissioned Second Lieutenant, and again promoted to be list Lieutenant of his company, May 29, 1862.


Lientenant Butler hnd served in the United States army in Mexico in Com pany E, Third United States Artillery under Captain Sherman, and vas at tire battles of Monterey and Buena Vista, and the experience gained in that service was very useful when, September 15, 1862, there was placed with the Ninth a small battery of howitzers, which were assigned to Lieutenant Butler and a detail under Lis charge.


Lieutenant Butler was a good soldier, brave and faithful, and performed most excellent service with the regiment during the period of his service.

Dwight S. Heald joined the Ninth Ilmais Cavalry, October 7, 1861, was commissioned Second Lieutenant of Company I, but telpaimed with the regiment but a short time, resigning November 7, 1861, on account of ill health and died soon after.

James Smith joined the regiment September 23, 1861 ; was l'irst Sergeant, and was made Second Lieutenant May 29, 1542, but di! not remain with the regi ment long as he resigned his commission September 4, 1502.

After his return home Commode Magee remained on the old farm until the fall of 1867, when he attended Anos' National Business College at Syracuse, >. Y., and graduated in the spring of 1569.


Hle was soon after married to Miss A. P. Hayes, of Careupvia. N. Y. Remgra- ing to Ilinois both taught school until the spring of 1870, when he removed lu Yankton, Dak., and engaged in contracting and 1 bunding with the fall of 1979; be then comma nel attending lecturey in the Hahnemann Medical College and Hospital of Chicago, where he graduated in 18-1. Prior to attending college he had been reading medicine for several years, since which that he has been actively engaged in the practice of medicine and surgery.


After spending some time in the South be lesite l in Santa Clara, Cal., in the spring of 1857: where he has already built up a pool practice and in one of the leading men in his profession in that country.


His address, June, 1548, is Santa Clara, Gul.

Comrade Oft has always been an honest industrious man, respected wherever known, and has met with fair snecess in life.


He is genial and hearty in manner and speech, and now resides in Kindles. Kan.


MALACHI SALTER


enlisted in Company F, Ninth Ilivois Cavalry, September 25, 1-61, At Chicago; re-enleted January 1, 1561, and was appointed Corporal, and again promoted to be Sergeant of his company, and was mustered rift at Schua, Ala .. October 31, 1865.


Comrade Salter was a faithful, good soldier, who serve l his country well dur ing the whole war, he was a thorough patriot and had an honest pride ja doing his part to uphold the flag and maintain the grove moment of the United Sinteti.

After the close of his service he removed to Sedalia, Mo., where he for his wife in 1871. He has many ups and downs in life, and is now living with his fourth wife, a cheerful, happy old man nearly eighty years of age, at Ciny Centie, Kan.
