COMPANY D.
Company D. Ninth Illinois Cavalry, was originally recruited by William J. Wallace, Llewllyn Cowen and John H. Mc Mahon. and its ranks were made up from Chicago, Jerseyville and Vinden. Ill., and vicinity, and a number from Toledo, Ohio, and these three gentlemen were elected to be the first commissioned officers. and went into camp in the latter part of September, 1561, and were mustered into the service September 26th.
Of this company it may be said that they were good faiter .

and in the long time of their service acquitted themselves with credit, and under the leadership of some of their officers, who were rotably brave and dashing. and never backward when hard knocks were to be given or received. A large part of those of the company in March. 1964 re-enlisted as veterans, and under the lead of men who had remained faithful to the canse dio their full share in maintaining the credit of the regiment in all the wash ous duties they were called on to perform.
This company, while on escort and courier service with Gel- eral Sweeney. was often called upon for very hazardous courier duty, and were so fortunate in their performance of these dijes. as to merit and receive the thanks of the General, who expressed an earnest desire to take Company D with him when he loft that district; this however, was not allowed.
The deaths in Company D were one Lieutenant, one Ser geant, one Corporal. one Bugler and thirty nine privates. The number at original muster was eighty-nine men, and there were borne on the rolls first and last two hundred.
SKETCH OF CAPTAIN COWEN.
Llewellyn Cowen enlisted a part of those who afterward bee ane members of Company D, Ninth Illinois Cavalry, in the vicinity of Virden and Jerseyvih, Ill. ; came up to Chicago and was marined into the United States savie Sep- tember 26, 1861, as First Lieutenant, and on the prontotion of Captain Wathe to a majorship, he was commissioned Captain, March 1. 1.09, reunited with the regiment on duty the most of the time till his term of Service expireh. Squentes 23, 1861, when he murdered out of the service, returning to his old he me at Virden, IL, where he died.
While the regiment was in West Tennessee the gallant Capain Conten wal made happy by the presence of Mrs. Cowen, who offer entertained her husband's brother officers in a very charming manver.
SKETCH OF CAPTAIN KELLEY.
Patrick Kelley enlisted at Toledo, Ohio, September 10, 1861, and can.c to Chicago with a number of recruits, and joined his fortunes with thewy of Com pany D, Ninth Illinois Cavalry. He was mustered into the service at First Ser- geant, September 20, 1861, was commissioned Second Liegtrunth October 14. 1862, and was again promoted to be First Lieutenant, July 19, 1964, when the brave Lieutenant McMahon was killed at Tupelo. When the company recallted as veterans, Lieutenant Kelley was commissioned Captain of Company D. and remained with the regiment till the final muster out of the same, October 81, 1865.
Captain Kelley was a popular officer, always prompt and ready, and his genial manner and true irish wit made ham ; For limerite. Det.

detached service as Judge Advocate, and was one of the officers of the Mind. assigned to duty in the summer of 1965 to administer the oath of Aimjesty. He died February 8, 1858, at East Saginaw, Mich.
SKETCH OF LIEUTENANT CONN.
George W. Conn enlisted from Jerseyville, Il., September 10, 1961, in Com- pany D, of the Ninth, and on the muster in of the company, September 20, 12GL, was appointed Sergeant, and was commissioned Second Lieutenant, Marchi, 1862, and served with the company through Missionri and Arkan as till October 18, 1862, when his health failing le resigned and returned to his olu Lome in. Illinois. His present address is Jerseyville, HI.
SKETCH OF LIEUTENANT MCMAHON.
John H. McMahon joined the Ninth Minois Cavalry with the men who come from Toledo, Ohio. He was conan sioned Second Lieutenant and master d into the service September 26, 1561.
Lieutenant MeMachen was the youngest oficer of the regiment. He volver impetuous, and brave to rashness, but always un: bitious to do his wich duty, so d his quick temper and overbearing manner sometime got him into trodde; stillbe was well liked, and his many brave and noble qualities wan him many friends among his brother officers and comrades; promoted to be First Lieutenant, Marc 1,1862.
In July, 1563, while in command of Company H, Ninth Ilinois Cavehy, Tupelo, Miss., while gallantly and bravely charging at the head of his commonly, he met with a shower of rebel bullets, and fell a vietingto what was thoughit & the time a useless order by Colone! Mower, and one entirely barren of resulor except to lose us a number of good men.

Benjamin Ratz enlisted from Toledo, Ohio. December 2 1st, Jul re-enlisted as a veteran January 1, 1, was appointed Sergeant, and Buy to. 1895, was commissioned Second Isentasout of Community Di seating why the Gym pany till the final muster out of the regiment at & Ia, Al., October 21. 150.
Lieutenant Ratz was a brave officer and gallant soldier, constantly on duty, and was always considered " one of the reliables."
After the war he returned to his old home at Toledo, Ohio, which is Kuje present address, in 1558.

James H. Hazlett enlisted in Girard, September 10, 1961; re-enlisted as a vel eran January 1, 1864; was promoted and was appointed Sergeant, and :vnin promoted to be First Lieutenant, and commissioned as such, March 25, 1995 remaining with the regiment and participating in all its battles, trials and hold. ships till the close of the war, when he was mustered out with the regiment October 31, 1865, at Springfield, Ill.
Lieutenant Hazlett was a good soldier, always ready for duty, brave and ca! Jant. He had the re guard of all his eomer des.

NINTH ILLINOIS CAVALRY VOLUNTEERS.
HIRAM A. HAWKINS
enlisted at Virden, Ill., September 10, 1861, in Company D, of the Ninth Illinois Cavalry, and was promoted Sergeant, and later again promoted as First Sergeant of his company, serving faithfully as a good soldier until the expiration of his term, September 23, 1664.
Comrade Hawkins was a man who was highly esteemed, and was always to be relied upon to perform whatever came in the line of duty. He was detailed by order of General Washburn to serve with Captain Knight at Fort Pickering in the spring of 1864, and was soon after given charge of the postoffice in the fort, afterward was placed in charge of troops between Vicksing. Memphis and Cairo, and served intelligently in that important responsible position till hi. fill muster out in the fall of 1864, when he was ordered to Springfield, Ill., for final payment and discharge.
Since the war he has been engaged in his old trade as willwright, and latteily in the employ of the city of Chicago in the responsible position of Superintendent of Meters ingthe water department; a genial, honorable, pleasant gentien an, much respected by all who know him. CHARLES C. WHITE,
from Waterford, Mich., enlisted in Company D, of the Ninth Ilinois Cavalry, September 10, 186!, and served with the regiment as a good soldier, brave and always ambitions to do his whole duty.
He was engaged in all the battles of the regiment up to August 22, 1564, at Coldwater, Miss, when he was captured by the rebels ou the " Grenada Baid." and was taken to Libby and Belle Isle prison., and was paroled at Richmond March 7, 1864, and exchanged at St. Louis May ; following, and rejoined the regiment at once at Memphis, Tenn., soon after which he was promoted First Sur- geant of his company, and was with the regiment constantly till the expiration of his term of service, and was mustered out September 23, 1504.
Of late years Cominide White ha - beera resident of the West, whereh i opp of the highly respected citizens of Nebraska and is a very popular man. He has been State Senator, and has large milling interests at Cute and Valparaiso.
His home at this time, May, 1888, is in the town of Crete, Neb.
SAMUEL B. DAVIS
enlisted at Toledo, Ohio, September 10, 1861, in Company D, of the Ninth Ilinois Cavalry, and re-enlisted as a veteran January 1, 1564, serving with the regincent faithfully all these years as a good soldier and patriot.
At Jacksonport, Ark., in the spring of 1862, he, in connection with others of the Ninth, took possession of a printing office which the rebel editor had deserted and abandoned, and receiving an order from Colonel Brackett, approved by General Fred Steele, proceeded to transform the institution into a Union paper. styled the Carolier, which was issued as "often as convenient" while the reli- ment remained in this vicinity, and which was a source of niuch amusement and some little financial success to the self-assumed proprietors. .
