COMPANY E.
Company E was recruited in the vicinity of Logansport. Il .. and as they came to Colonel Brackett. expreting to go into the " First, Western Cavalry," there was considerable dissatisfaction when it was learned that the regiment was to be down as il Illinois regiment, and designated the " Ninth Illinois Cavaby." This feeling of discontent becoming known to Colonel Brackett. he at once took prompt measures to squelch any overt act.
Company E was formed in ranks and told by the Cologo !. " All who were not satisfied to step two prees to the front." Two or three stepped out, and more were on the point of doing so, when Colonel Brackett motioned to his gum de and those who had come out were immediately arrested and takes to the ground house, where they were confined for some time. This action of the Colonel in enforcing military authority land a wholesome effect, and nothing more was heard of the " First Westog Cavalry."
Ira R. Gifford was elected Captain; Richard D. Ellsworth. First Lieutenant: Benjamin O. Wilkinson, Sopond Lieutenant: these gentlemen having largely recruited the company, amt hav ing the confidence and respect of the men. The record of Cour- pany E was a good one, and it was not long before they became quite reconciled to being associated with their Minois commandes. and could always hoylied upon to proform their full share of all the duties pertaining to good lighting solutions.

Spencer T. Lieutenant Wilson was a pleasant young man, and much in earnest in all thet pertained to military life; coming among us as he did the last year of the war, he had but little fighting to do, but he was to don't equal to any demands that might have been made upon him.

Charles M. Haner came from Wooster, Ohio, and enlisting in Company F, to date from September 1, 1861, was made Sergeant
Re-enlisted as a veteran, he was made First Sergent February 29, 1-14, and on the 26th of March, 1865, was commissioned Second Lieutenant of Company E, which position he filled with ability till the regiment war mustered out at Selma, Ala., October 31, 1865.
Lieutenant Haner was an excellent soldier, always ready for daty, brave and reliable. He was in all the severe service and arduous campaigns in which his company was engaged, and was much este med by his associate in arms.

Comrade Eaton was a brave, good soldier, and soon after the return of the regiment to Memphis, while on a scout with a detachment of the Ninth vitb General Sturgis, was taken prisoner by the enemy and atter being confined sogar weeks by the rebels at Oxford, Miss., efected his escape, rejoining the reginal' in an ahnost starved condition (having had no food for three days) at Menphi
When he returned to his company he bas so unlike the rottind Enton sho had left them three weeks before that his comrades did not recognize him. He served with the regiment in all the battles, toils and hardships till the end of the war, and was mustered out at Selma, Ala .. October 51, 1905, after which he w. turned to his home in Henry County, and in 1571 moved to Chicago, where To followed his old trade as carpenter until Isis, when he engaged in the manufeet ure of machinery and engineering, and followed that hanch successfully will the latter part of it, when he was placed a engineer in charge of bakerloo 1.idge, Chicago, which position he still hold .

Comrade Eaton is an active, energetic business man, and i much respecten ond well known in the city of his adoption, Chicago, Il., which is his prevent address.
PERRY B. BOWSER,
from Logansport, Ind., enlisted in Company E, Ninth linois Cavalry, Novem ber 1, 1861, having previously served in the three months' service.
He is a man of some literary ability and was one of the cities of The Cent lier, at Jacksonport, in the spring of 1992, and wrote many graphic accounts of the doings of the army to the Northern papers. He has also written a book for publication entitled " Four Years in the Cavalry Service by a Corpond."
Ile was discharged from the service for disability at Helena, Ark., July 17, 1862. After recovering his health he again entered the service, and remained through the war.
Of late years he has been located at Logansport, Ind., which was his o !! home, but bas now made a change, and is living, June, Ires, al Liwood, Ind.
