gathered by those who became its officers (but not at the first entirely). and was mustered into the service October 26. 1861.


The first commissioned officers were Captain Solomon A. Paddock. First Lieutenant Charles S. Cameron, Second Lieuten- ant William Me Mannis.


This company was an exceptionally fine body of men and their record during the whole term of service was one to be proud of. In the catly field service of the regiment, Company K was stationed at Patterson, Mo., and there performed excellent patrol- ling service, and later rejoined the regiment in the latter part of May at Jacksonport. Ark., and in the fight on June 12. 1862, this company, being in the advance, suffered the most having twelve men wounded. From this time on until their final muster out Company & was one of the reliables, always well managed, promptly and gallantly performing every duty devolving upon them. A large part of the company in March, 1844, became rel. erans, and under a new set of officers fuhy maintained the splet- did reputation they had sonobly won.


They mustered originally eighty eight men, and the total number borne on their master roll was two hundred and three.


SKETCH OF CAPTAIN CAMERON.


Charles S. Cameron entered the service as First Lieutenant of Company K. Ninth Ilinois Cavalry i'm the promotion of captain Paddock he was conny- sioned Captain, remaining in Que service until December 31, 1968, when he was discharged.


Among the most distinguished incidents of Captain Comeun's minis career may be noted the fight at the Waddell form, June 12, 1969, where the Cup- tain, while leading his "gallant heroes of Company K," was unhoused. Again. at the battle of Moscow, Tonn., December 4, 1599, Captain Cameron, being the senior captain ou duty, was in command of the regiment, and midea galln.t light on the enemy across Wolf river, who were finally discentited and driven back.


After leaving the service Captain Cameron engaged in the political arena in the South for awhile, after which he returned to Chicago, where he has been for many years engaged in the practice of his profession and the politics of the day.

later was promoted First Sergeant of his company, inwhich position be served well and faithfully until he was again promoted to be First Iienteros September 23, 1564.


On the promotion of Captain Clark to a majorship Lieutenant Spinney received his conmission as captain, remaining with the company until the final muster-out at selma, Ala., Octoba 31, 1555.


Captain Spinney was one of the true and trial, who by his bravery am? file soldierly qualities won his way upward, and also gained the respect and tastyem of both officer- and men.


His genial, hearty speech and mener made him a general favorite

Oliver T. Prickett joined the Ninth Ilinois Cavally in the spring of 1995. bringing with kin quite a number of recruits, which were absorbed in Company K, of which Prickett was made Second Lieutenant May 5, and was protein ! First Lieutenant May 10, 1565, remained with the regiment notil the fund ina-to-gut at Schus, Ala., October . 1, 156.

Frank Wood worth enlisted at Bloomingdale, September 5. 1861, and writing Company K was made Corporal, reunlisted as a veteran, January 1. 19H, wal- made First Sergeant and served in that position mail May 10, 1stor when he was commissioned Secord Lieutenant, and was with the company and regions in faithful, good soldierly service during a period of over four years. In all the eu- gagements of his company he gallantly bore himself some to win the respect of all.

Comrade Wilder was one of the best soldiers in the Ninth, and with his com rades of Company K, was always to be relied upon to do bravely ami well all sollierly duties.


At the spirited fight, at the Waddell farm, whope Company K. han twelve men wounded, J. R. Wilder received a painful though not dangerous shot formu the rebels, but was soon ready for duty again, and remained with us till the fall of 1964, then returning to Illinois. He he of late yours made his hen in Kilos ville, where he is still successfully capazed as a merchant in that city, an honored and esteemed citizen.

November 20, 1561, when at the battle of Franklin, Tona, he reached a day wound in the arm, and wa- taker prisoner with his brother John C., who refused to leave him. He was taken to General Forte t, who treated him very kindly, and gave him a recommendation to Ciencial Loting, which secured a jungle for both. General Loring made his headquarters at the house of . B. Mathews where the next day he paroled the brothers.


Volney remained at the plant tion two months, and tien went to the co pital at Franklin, where the surgeon wanted to amputate hi- and, but he would not consent and thereby saved his arm, then went to the hospital at Nashville. It- ceiving here a furlough, joining the regiment at Mestport, Miss .. in June 1. 65, and was discharged for disability, Septembers, IN.


Ilis present address is Doleth, Minn. Where he has been comnord successfully in business for many years.
