IRA R. HENDRICKSON was born near Robinson, Ill., but when he was but five years old his parents moved to West Milton, Ohio. Living on a farm he at- tended the little red schoolhouse until he was ready for high school in the neigh- boring village. After graduating from this school, he spent one year in the Academy at Bridgewater, Va. He then turned to Mount Morris College, graduating from the Junior College in 1894. The next two years were spent in DePauw University, from which he was graduated in 1896. Following this, he married Addie Windle, of Mount Morris. During the next year they lived in Mount Morris, having charge of Mr. Windle's store. Turning to teach- ing, he taught two years in Lamar, Mo., following which he spent four years as Principal of the high school in Schuyler, Nebr. In the spring of 1903, he returned

to Mount Morris to take charge of his father-in-law's farm but soon was per- suaded to enter the Mount Morris College management. It was at that time that he purchased the residence in which he still lives. For twelve years, he taught in the college. Along with Prof. Furrey, he was largely responsible for the building of the first gymnasium and the development of an athletic program for the college. From 1908 to 1915, he was faculty director of athletics. During this time, he also had charge of the college lyceum course which was developed into one of the most popu- lar entertainment features of the com- munity, oftentimes with 1000 people in attendance at a single entertainment.

Invited by the public school board to accept the position of public school super- intendent, he did so in the summer of 1915. He added a fourth year to the high school, graduating the first four-year class in 1916. The entire enrollment of the high school during that year was 45, with seven in the senior class. During the next three years the enrollment increased so rapidly that a new building was impera- tive. As a result, the present high school building was erected in 1918. When the legislature provided for the organization of community high school districts, he was instrumental in establishing the pres- ent district. For the next several years, he acted both as principal of the high school and as superintendent of the grades. For the past twelve years, he has given all his attention to the high school. Under his management the school has had a re- markable growth. In enrollment, it has reached 225. In curriculum, from a nar- row, single course without electives, it now has a wide line of electives with strong vocational departments in home economics, agriculture and commercial. The school is fully accredited by Univer- sity and State Department and was ad-

mitted into the North Central Association in 1924, the highest rating possible.

During the years of his teaching he spent six summers in graduate work in the University of Chicago and one in the University of Wisconsin. Interested in the lyceum and chautauqua, for six sum- mers he acted as manager on several of the large chautauqua circuits in which work he made an enviable reputation in chautauqua circles.

During the 35 years that Mr. Hendrick- son has lived in Mount Morris, he has taken an active part in the life of the community. While connected with the col- lege, he served terms both on the school board and on the village board. He was one of the organizers of the Ben Ezra Club and served as its president during its most prosperous year. Following the organization of the Kiwanis Club, he was elected its president for five consecutive years. For one year he was Lieutenant- Governor of this district of Kiwanis. He is now club secretary. During the past two years, he has been president of the county P. T. A. organization. Always in- terested in agriculture, he is a member of the Farm Bureau and a director in the Mount Morris Elevator Company. He is a Mason and a member of the Brethren Church in which he has taught a Sunday school class for many years. He also is president of the Men's Brotherhood of that church.

At the close of this school year, he re- tired from the teaching profession after an unbroken service of 35 years in Mount Morris.

Mrs. Hendrickson was born near Mount Morris, her parents being George and Mary (Sprecher) Windle. Following her attendance at the rural school, she at- tended Mount Morris College from which she graduated in the art department. She continued her work in Zanerian Art School, Columbus, Ohio, and the Snow- Froelich Art School, New York, from both of which she received diplomas. She also studied in the Art Institute and in the studios of prominent artists of Chicago. For two years she taught art in Lamar College, Mo. Discontinuing her work be- cause of family duties she again took it up in 1910 when she became head of the

art department of Mount Morris College, a position which she held until 1927, be- ing compelled to give it up on account of ill health. An accomplished artist, her studio attracted many students and be- came one of the show places of the col- lege. She is a member of the Brethren Church, is a charter member of both the Eastern Star and the Woman's Club. Also she belongs to the Current Events and Fortnightly Clubs, as well as a number of social organizations.

Mr. and Mrs. Hendrickson have reared a family of three children. Ruth, the oldest, is the wife of Howard Wood, fi- nance editor of the Chicago Tribune, and resides in Lake Bluff, Ill. Vivian is mar- ried to Harry G. Mitchell, of the Y.M.C.A. College, Chicago. Both Ruth and Vivian are graduates of Lake Forest College. George, the youngest, after three years in Mount Morris College, finished his work in Knox College. Later he attended the Uni- versity of Wisconsin where he secured his Master's degree. He married Gladys Amundsen and resides in Waupaca, Wis., where he is principal of both the junior and senior high schools.

The event of his retirement was marked by a number of fitting testimonials. At the high school commencement exercises, a surprise feature was the unveiling of a bronze plaque which is to be placed in the high school building. The plaque bears the following inscription: "This tablet was presented June 1, 1938, to the Mount Morris Community High School by its board of education as a perpetual tribute to Ira R. Hendrickson. He served faith- fully as principal from the school's estab- lishment in 1915 to his retirement in June, 1938." Also he was honored in a testi- monial dinner given by the High School Alumni Association, the Business Men's League and the Kiwanis Club when these organizations presented him with a hand- some watch chain on fob. A fitting ex- pression of appreciation and good will was also presented to the Hendricksons by the Mount Morris Church of the Brethren in the work of which they have been active for many years.

Following the close of the school year, Mr. and Mrs. Hendrickson removed to their farm at Round Lake, Minn.

COMMUNITY HIGH SCHOOL ORGANIZED

IN June, 1920, the public schools of Mount Morris were divided into two separate organizations. Previous to that time there was only one school, known as Mount Morris District No. 61. The four years of high school were then separated and organized under the new state law as Community High School District No. 216, and this district was enlarged to take in certain country ter- ritory adjacent to Mount Morris. Dis-

trict No. 61 had built the new high school building in 1918 and this was then leased to the new high school district. However, Prof. Hendrickson continued to function as superintendent of both schools until 1925 when he relinquished supervision of the grade school and has since devoted his entire time to the high school.
