THEODORE HORST-Entered service in October, 1917, at Camp Grant, Rockford, and was assigned to Co. L, 342nd Inf. He contracted pneumonia and after a stay of two months in Base Hospital, he was dis- charged on Dec. 11, 1917.

OTTO HUTHANSEL Joined navy at New York City, 1903, and shipped to Newport, R.I., Training Station. He re- ceived rank of Chief Boatswain's mate and was transferred to Naval Reserve in 1921. During 18 years' service in the navy he visited most of the European countries, and during the period of the war was oc- cupied in the training of navy recruits. He retired Jan. 1, 1935.


EDWARD J. HYLAND-Enlisted in the U.S. Navy at Milwaukee and was trained at the U.S. Naval Base at Hampton Roads, Va. Was promoted to third class quarter- master. Was discharged in September, 1923.

A. C. JINDRA-Enlisted at Fort Logan, Colo., with 24th Co. Band, as musician, first class. He was transferred Nov. 8, 1918 to 6th Band, C.A.C., Fort Worden, Wash. He was discharged June 16, 1919, after 19 months' service.


AXEL JOHNSON-Enlisted at DeKalb, Ill., June 8, 1915, with the 3rd Ill. Infantry Band, later reorganized to the 129th In- fantry. He was trained at San Antonio and Houston, Texas. Received rank of 1st class Musician and was overseas from May, 1918 to May, 1919. Discharged June 6, 1919. He was on the Mexican Border for 8 months and served 2 years in the World War.


MERRITT KEEDY-Son of Howard Keedy. Entered service at Camp Grant, Ill., May 25, 1918, and assigned to Co. 22, 161st Depot Brigade. In November, 1913, transferred to 6th Development Battalion, Camp Logan, Houston, Texas. Discharged Feb. 18, 1919, after 8 months' service. Now living in Chicago.

JOSEPH LUNDHOLM - Enlisted at Galesburg, Ill., May 3, 1917, with Supply Co., 60th Artillery C.A.C. He was trained at Fort Hunt, Va., and was overseas from April 23, 1918, to Nov. 11, 1918, and was discharged Feb. 26, 1919, after 23 months' service.


ORLO MADDEN-Son of Rev. David M. Madden. Enlisted in U.S. Marines and sent to Paris Island, S.C. Transferred for guard duty on Pier 72, E. 24th St., New York City. Promoted to corporal in April, 1918.


RALPH K. MAHOY-Enlisted May 16, 1917, in Co. K, 3rd I.N.G. at Rockford. Sent for training to Camp Logan, Hous- ton, Texas. Transferred to Co. K, 129th Infantry, U.S.N.G. He worked for a number of years as pressman in the Kable plant, but was compelled to relinquish this work in 1934 because of defective eyesight, due to be- ing gassed during the war. He was mar- ried in 1918 to Bessie Keedy.


PAUL MAKEL-Enlisted Dec. 18, 1916, with Co. I, 41st Inf., at Columbus, O. He was trained and saw service on the Mexi- can Border, later being transferred to Camp Upton, N.Y., and assigned to Re- cruiting Service in New York City. He was promoted to rank of Corporal in October, 1917, and in January, 1918, to Sergeant. Discharged April 29, 1920, after 3 years and 4 months' service.


HEATHCOTE MANN-Entered service in May, 1918, at Camp Upton, Long Island, N.Y. Transferred to Co. M, 322nd Inf., and sent to France in July, 1918. Trans- ferred in August, 1918 to Co. A, 166th Inf., 42nd (Rainbow) Division. Served through St. Mihiel and Meuse-Argonne offensives, and was member of Army of Occupation on the Rhine. Discharged May 6, 1919, at Camp Custer, Mich., after 12 months' service.


LLOYD W. MARSHALL-Son of John Marshall. Entered service at Camp Grant, Rockford. Assigned to Co. 20, 161st Depot Brigade. Promoted to Sergeant in June, 1918. In July, 1918, transferred to Co. M, 342nd Inf., 86th Division. Embarked for France in September, 1918. Died June 11, 1930.


LIEUT. DUDLEY McCOSH-Son of David S. McCosh. Served during the World War in organizing army bands. He was first sent to Corvallis, Ore., to organ- ize 600 draft musicians into band units. He was later sent to Camp Grant to con- duct a training school for band masters. He came to Mount Morris in the fall of 1928 to take charge of the Kable band but died in January, 1929.


MAC McCOSH-Son of Dr. G. B. Mc- Cosh. Enlisted in the 12th Unit, Medical Corps, from Chicago and sailed for Eng- land in May. Transferred to France with the British Expeditionary Forces and pro- moted to the rank of sergeant. Transferred to the American Expeditionary Forces and commissioned second lieutenant in the statistical Division of the Adjutant Gen- eral's department of the 32nd Division in Paris.

HARVEY MILLER-Son of John D. Mil- ler. Entered service at Camp Grant, April 26, 1918. Assigned to Co. C, 343rd Infantry. Sailed . for France in September, 1918. Transferred to Co. D, 109th Inf., and to Co. B, 112th Inf. He served 21 days at the front in the St. Mihiel offensive with the 28th Division. Returned in May, 1919, and discharged May 15, 1919, after 13 months' service.


WILBUR MILLER-Son of John D. Mil- ler. Entered service with Co. A, 344th In- fantry. Was trained at Camp Grant and discharged for physical disability Sept. 1, 1918.


ALFRED MOSER-Enlisted at Oregon, Ill., in April, 1918. He first went to Camp Shelby, Miss., but was transferred to New York, and from there to New Cumber- land, Penn., with the 341st Fire & Guard. In May, 1919, he was sent to Camp Grant, Rockford, to be discharged and arrived home May 10, 1919, after 121/2 months of service. He was a first class private.

CHARLES PARROTT-Enlisted at Knoxville, Tenn., Sept. 22, 1917, and served with the 117th Infantry. Was in France and Belgium from May 11, 1918 to March 27, 1919. He was discharged from Ft. Oglethorpe, Ga., April 13, 1919, after 19 months' service.


GEORGE H. PAUL-Son of Christ Paul. Enlisted July 24, 1917, at Rockford, Ill., with seven other Mount Morris boys, in Co. K, 3rd Ill. Inf., which was later trans- ferred to 129th Infantry. Left Rockford for training at Camp Logan, Houston, Texas, Sept. 13, 1917. Left for France May 16, 1918, and served with the same com- pany against the enemy at Villers-Bret-


neaux, Albert and Verdun. On Sept. 29, 1918, while serving on the Verdun Front was struck by shrapnel from a six-inch gun which caused the loss of the left leg and the hearing in the left ear, the ear drum being ruptured by the concussion of the bursting shell. Spent about two months in various hospitals in France and then left St. Nazaire as a stretcher patient on Nov. 22, arriving in the U.S.A. Dec. 9, after a voyage of seventeen days, nine of which were a continual, severe storm. He was sent to Orthopedic Hospital at Fort Snelling, St. Paul, Minn., and was dis- charged from that place May 22, 1919, after spending about eight months in the hospital.


DR. C. J. PRICE-Enlisted at Rock- ford, July 14, 1918. Was commissioned captain July 26, 1918. Was sent to Fort Oglethorpe, Ga., Aug. 22, started over- seas Oct. 4, 1918, and was on active duty in France until June 21, 1919. While in France Dr. Price was commanding officer of Camp Hospital No. 39 at La Rochelle. He was discharged June 26 at Camp Dix, N.J., after 11 months' service.


MAURICE L. QUINLAN-Enlisted at Ft. Slocum, N.Y., in the 121st Aero Squad- ron. He was trained at Kelly Field, Texas, and Langley Field, Va. Served 11 months and had rank of sergeant.


EDWARD RANEY-Son of Jacob Raney. Entered service at Camp Grant, Rockford. Assigned to Co. L, 342d Inf. Later transferred to Camp Sheridan, Montgomery, Ala., and assigned to Base Hospital. He was discharged Mar. 5, 1919, after 18 months' service.

JOHN RANEY-Son of Jacob Raney. Entered service May 2 at Jefferson Bar- racks, Mo. Transferred to Camp Mac- Arthur, Waco, Texas, and assigned to Co. E, 55th Inf. In July transferred to Camp Merritt, N.J. Arrived in France in August. 1918. Took part in St. Mihiel drive and in the Argonne.

PAUL H. SHERRICK-Son of Prof. M. M. Sherrick. Enlisted Aug. 5 at Traverse City, Mich., in Quartermaster Dept. Trans- ferred to Clerical Dept., Signal Corps, at Grand Rapids. Sent to Columbus, Ohio, receiving station and then to Camp Alfred Vail, N.J., and assigned to Co. D, 422nd Telegraph Battalion. In October, 1918, transferred to Camp Merritt, N.J., and sailed for France.


CARL SHOWE-Enlisted in the U.S. Navy at Des Moines, Iowa, and was trained at the Great Lakes Naval Station. His rank was 1st Class Engineman, and he made six trips across the Atlantic. He was discharged Nov. 20, 1919, after two years' service.


ROSS SILVIUS-Enlisted at Camp Zachary Taylor in the 21st Co., 6th Bat- talion, on Sept. 4, 1918, but being under weight was discharged as physically un- fit for service.


CLAUDE SMITH-Son of Chas. Smith. Entered service May 25, 1918, at Camp Shelby, Hattiesburg, Miss. Assigned to 150th Ambulance Co., 113th Sanitary Train, 38th Div. In September, 1918, trans- ferred to Camp Mills, Long Island, N.Y., and arrived safely overseas in October, 1918. Died of influenza in Alexandra Park Hospital, England, and buried with full military honors at Willow Grove Ceme- tery, Reddish, England. Body was brought to Mount Morris for burial in October, 1920.


JESSE SMITH-Enlisted July, 1917, with Co. K, 3rd Ill. Nat. Guard, at Camp Grant, Ill. Was discharged in August, 1917, because of physical disability.


CHARLES H. SPIKER-Enlisted at Great Falls, Mont., in Co. M, 306th Inf. Was sent overseas in August, 1918; re- turned and was discharged in May, 1919.


WILLIAM B. STIGER-Enlisted in September, 1918, at Claremore, Okla., in Co. 260, 15th Sanitary Train, and was trained at Camp Logan, Tex. Was dis- charged Feb. 1, 1919.


FRED STEFFEN-Enlisted in the navy at Milwaukee and was trained at Great Lakes, Ill., and Hampton Roads, Va. He served on the Battleship Missouri as first class seaman and second class gun- ner's mate from June, 1918, until Jan- uary, 1919. Was discharged Jan. 25, 1919.


HARRY STOUFFER-Entered service December, 1917, at Gordon, Nebr., with C. Co., 313th Signal Battalion. He was appointed cook and was trained at Lin- coln, Nebr., and Leavenworth, Kans. Discharged June 19, 1919, after 18 months' service.


MARTIN STOUFFER .- Entered service with Co. L, 342nd Inf., Camp Grant, Rockford. In December, 1917, transferred to Headquarters Co., 161st Depot Brigade. In February, 1918, appointed corporal clerk. In July, 1918, transferred to Camp Raritan, Metuchen, N.J., and assigned to Co. C.


JOHN H. STOVER-Son of Mrs. Sarah Stover. Enlisted in January, 1918, at San Francisco, and assigned to Quartermas- ter's Corps. Later transferred to Camp Joseph E. Johnston, Jacksonville, Fla., and assigned to Chauffeur's Co., No. 1. Arrived in France in July, 1918. In Aug- ust transferred to Motor Transport Corps, School No. 1. Later assigned to Prov. Co. C, in motor transport service.


JOSEPH STRITE-Enlisted in June, 1918, at Oregon, Ill., in the 310th M.T.C. Was trained at Kansas City, Mo., and promoted to corporal. Was sent over- seas in October, 1918. He returned and was discharged in September, 1919, after 15 months' service.


HENRY CARL SUTER-Son of Samuel Suter. Entered service May 25, 1918, at Camp Shelby, Hattiesburg, Miss., and as- signed to Co. A, 138th Machine Gun Bat- talion. In September, 1918, transferred to Camp Mills, Long Island, and arrived overseas early in October.


WORTHINGTON H. THOMAS-Son of Noble Thomas. Enlisted in Students' Army Training Corps, Sept. 29, 1918, and was assigned to Company B, University of Illinois Training School, Champaign, Ill. Discharged Dec. 17, 1918.


JAMES TICE-Son of Cleg Tice. On Nov. 27, 1917, commissioned first lieuten- ant of Infantry at the Reserve Officers Training Camp, Ft. Sheridan, Ill., and as- signed to Camp Grant. In February trans- ferred to the 311th Cavalry, U.S. Regular Army, and sent to Fort Riley, Kans. Pro- moted to official squadron adjutant of Troops E, F, G, and H. In August, 1918, made Personnel Adjutant, 68th Field Ar- tillery, West Point, Ky. In September, 1918, promoted to Captain. In November, 1918, appointed Personnel Adjutant and Assistant Secretary to the Commandant of the School of Fire for Artillery Offi- cers at Fort Sill, Okla.

MOUNT MORRIS: PAST AND PRESENT


E. R. TILDEN-Enlisted in the U.S. Navy at Chicago, Ill. He trained at Great Lakes, Ill., and served as a member of the Armed Guard Crew on the transport "Amphion" during her useful life-Sept. 20, 1917, to June 15, 1918. He was then Radioman on the merchant ship "Arun- do" to the end of the war. He made six trips overseas. Was discharged Dec. 15, 1919, after serving 3 years and 2 months.
