ISAAC BARNHIZER died Sept. 1, 1905, aged 65 years. He was born in 1840 in Pine Creek Township and lived all his life in Ogle County except 25 years spent in farming in Iowa. He served in Co. H, 34th Illinois Infantry, during four years of the Civil War. He married Susan Artz in 1867 and they had seven children. His first wife died and he was again married to Ann B. Hopewood, and they had three children.


OLIVER J. BEARD was born in Cave- town, Md., June 1, 1836, and died in Mount Morris June 17, 1926, aged 90 years. In 1862, he enlisted in Co. E, 2nd Maryland Infantry, and served until the close of the Civil War. He located in Mount Morris in 1890 where he lived un- til his death. In 1859 he married Julia Houser and they lived together for over 67 years, Mrs. Beard preceding him in death only five weeks. Eight children were born to them: Annie (Mrs. Frank Brinker), Daniel, Charles, William, Lew- is, Belle (Mrs. S. E. Avey), George and Kate (Mrs. Chas. McIlvanie).

EDWIN BRICKNELL served in Co. A, 65th Ill. Inf. He died June 10, 1903, aged 66 years. He was born in Devonshire, Eng- land, in 1837, and came to Ogle County in 1851, where he engaged in farming. He married Lydia Miller in 1865, and they had nine children, including John, Ward, Lewis, Clinton, Charles, Jessie and Lil- lian. See picture on page 280.

SAMUEL R. BLAIR was born in Mary- land Township, near Adeline, July 1, 1845, and died in Mount Morris, Jan. 9, 1908, aged 62 years. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. W. S. Blair and the family moved to Mount Morris in 1850. The father was the owner of the well-known Blair Hotel. During the Civil War, Mr. Blair enlisted in Co. I, 140th Ill. Inf., serving from April, 1864, to the end of the war. In 1867, he was married to Carrie V. Fish and they had one child, William M. Mrs. Blair passed away in 1907.

WAR HISTORY


ROBERT CROSBY, son of Robert and Margarette Crosby, was born in Phila- delphia, Pa., Sept. 5, 1844, and died in Mount Morris, Dec. 10, 1927, aged past 83 years. He spent his boyhood days in Pennsylvania and came to Mount Morris when 14 years old. At the age of 17 he enlisted in Co. K, 92nd Illinois Infantry, and served until the end of the Civil War. For many years he was janitor at the public school building. In 1874, he mar- ried Mary E. Coggins, and two children were born: Fred and a son who died in infancy.

LEWIS L. DAVIS enlisted in 1864 in Co. I, 140th Ill. Inf. He was found dead March 14th, 1913, at his home where he lived alone. He was born May 14, 1842, at Boons- boro, Md., and came to Mount Morris with his parents in 1855, where he lived con- tinuously except during the Civil War. At death he was nearly 71 years of age. He never married. See picture on page 280.


ALFRED M. DOWARD served during the Civil War in Co. D, 4th Ill. Cav. He died August 18, 1910, aged 77 years. He was born at Reading, Pa., Oct. 4, 1933, and came to Mount Morris in 1854. He was a wood worker and for many years had a shop one door north of A. W. Neff's black- smith shop. In 1860, he married Annorah Nichols, and to them were born six chil- dren: William A., Oscar L., Frank M., Mrs. Daisy Hamilton, Zenas O., and Winnie. See picture on page 280.

He died Feb. 14, 1917, at the age of nearly 80 years. He was born March 22, 1836, at East St. Louis, Ill., the son of Robert Fouke. The greater part of his life was spent in Mount Morris. In 1874 he married Elizabeth Alsip, and four children were born to them,-Fred, William, Robert and Nora (Mrs. Wm. Feary). See picture on page 280.

DAVID FRIDLEY served during the Civil War in Co. G, 74th Illinois Infantry. At Dallas, he received a wound in the left shoulder, the ball piercing the lung and coming out at the back, but he was back at the front in two months. He was the son of John and Nancy Fridley, died in October, 1899, at his farm home 21/2 miles southeast of Mount Morris, aged 60 years. He was born in Rockvale Township June 22, 1840. He married Mrs. Martha E. Flora in December, 1888.

CAPT. WILLIAM H. GIBBS, son of William J. Gibbs, was attending Rock River Seminary when Pres. Lincoln called for 75,000 volunteers and with twenty other members of the school responded to that call. They enlisted in Co. H, 15th Ill. Inf., in May, 1861. Gibbs was later pro- moted to captain and saw considerable active service during the war.

LEVI R. HOLSINGER at the begin- ning of the Civil War enlisted in Co. H, 34th Ill. Inf., a company which was made up of recruits from this vicinity. He died May 8, 1913, at the age of nearly 72 years. He was born in Blair County, Pa., October 20, 1840, and came to Mount Morris at an early age. He married Harriet Cheeseman in 1865, and they had five chil- dren: David, Ira, Otto, Mrs. Carrie Harr and Mrs. Minnie Paul. Mrs. Holsinger died while the family was residing in Kansas. Mr. Holsinger married again in 1875, to Mary Grossnickle, and three chil- dren were born to them: Anita (died March 18, 1907), Charles and Lloyd. Mrs. Holsinger died in 1936.


JOSEPH M. HOSKING was a veteran of the Civil War, regiment unknown. He conducted a photograph gallery over Brayton's Drug Store in Mount Morris for about ten years. He died suddenly in his gallery in January, 1896, and Roy Householder, his assistant, took over the business. He was the first commander of the local G.A.R. Post.

JOHN LONGMAN served in Co. F, 1st Md. Inf. He died December 28, 1915, aged 73 years. He was born in Washington County, Md., Nov. 17, 1842, and came to Mount Morris in 1881. He married Eliza V. Kennedy in 1869, and three children were born to them: Herlock E., Harry F., and Minnie (Mrs. Fred Middlekauff). Mrs. Longman died in 1904. See picture on page 280.


JACOB LOOKABAUGH served during the Civil War in Co. E, 63rd Pa. Inf. He died March 8, 1911, aged 86 years. He was born near Chambersburg, Pa., March 22, 1825, and brought his family to Mount Morris in 1875, where he engaged in farm- ing for a number of years in this vicinity. March 22, 1848, he married Rachael Buz- zard, and to them were born seven chil- dren-Samuel, Clinton, Harry, Jacob D., Mrs. John Traister, Mrs. Sanders Bain, and Mrs. Fred Bearman.


CHAS. T. MARSH, who spent his young manhood in Mount Morris, was the son of William Marsh, a sailor with Lord Nelson on the British man-of-war "Victory" at the Battle of Trafalgar, and was born at Dover, England, May 5, 1845. He came with his parents to America when he was ten years old and settled in Mount Morris. Seven years later, at the age of 17, when the Civil War broke out, Mr. Marsh vol- unteered as a member of Co. K, 92nd Illi- nois Infantry. During his three years of

service, he took part in 63 battles and skirmishes, and at Peachtree Creek was the principal in an act of heroism under fire for which he was recommended for a medal. He was discharged in July, 1865, with the rank of corporal. After the war he returned to Mount Morris and attended Mount Morris College. In 1893, he moved to Chicago where he was employed for 25 years in the internal revenue service. Mr. Marsh married Lucinda Hensel and they had three sons. He was married a second time to Cora Vandemark in 1901. He passed away in Rockford in 1930 at the age of 85 years. See picture on page 376.


JOHN MERRYMAN served in the 2nd Penn. Cav. He was born in Blair County, Pa., in 1841, and died of burns received in an accident, July 2, 1905, aged 631/2 years. After the war he came to Mount Morris and in 1869 married Miss Clara Sheets. Their children were Lottie, Charles, Wilbur, Lloyd, Edith, Hallie and Ethel. He was a carpenter by trade. See picture on page 280.


W. E. McCREADY was the next to the last veteran of the Civil War in Mount Morris to pass away. He was the son of John and Elizabeth McCready, was born Feb. 27, 1845, at Clinton, N.J., and died in Mount Morris, Sept. 25, 1934, aged 891/2 years. He came to Mount Morris Township with his parents in 1850. At the early age of 17, he enlisted in the 14th Illinois Cavalry, and served to the end of the war. He returned to Mount Morris and married Sarah Nye, who died in the early eighties. Three children were born to them: John C., who died in 1920, Mrs. Vernie Spielman and Charles. In 1885, he married Elizabeth Marsh, and one son, Fred, was born to them. Mr. McCready was engaged in farming in the vicinity of Mount Morris for many years and served as road commissioner of the township for over 25 years.


ROBERT D. McCLURE, one of Mount Morris's best known citizens, died Feb. 5, 1903, aged 58 years. He was born at Pitts- burgh, Pa., July 27, 1845, and spent his early life at Homestead, Pa. In 1865, he enlisted in Co. H, 2nd Pa. Inf. He came to Illinois in 1870, first locating at Haldane. In 1886, he purchased a farm one mile south of Mount Morris where he lived until his death. He was cashier of the bank at Forreston, supervisor from Lin- coln Township, first president of the Board of Education of Mount Morris, was justice of the peace for twelve years, and cashier of the Bank of Mount Morris for nine years. Mr. McClure married Eliza- beth Allen, Jan. 1, 1874, and they had four children: Robert R. McClure, attorney and farmer now living in Washington; Mary, former superintendent of Mount Morris High School; Maud, artist living in Mount Morris; Martha, wife of Hugh Allen, lieutenant commander, U.S. Navy, retired. Mrs. McClure passed away in 1927.


CAPT. FREDERICK H. MARSH came to Mount Morris in 1855 with his parents from Dover, England. He attended Rock River Seminary and at the outbreak of the war enlisted in Co. H, 15th Ill. Vol. Inf., but was later discharged because of illness. He recovered and reenlisted in Co. F, 46th Ill. Inf., and was promoted to captain in 1864. After the war he repre- sented Ogle and Lee Counties in the State Legislature and was elected sheriff of Ogle County in 1882. In 1885, he was ap- pointed U. S. Marshal of the Northern District of Illinois. Capt. Marsh married Kate Lehman in 1864. See picture on page 376.

The Northwestern Republican published in 1857 carried his business card. He was twice married, the second time to Barbara Wagner. Dr. McNeill had four children by each marriage. He died in 1872.

CAPT. HENRY H. NEWCOMER en- listed in Co. H, 34th Ill. Inf. He was pro- moted to lieutenant and later to captain. He was born in Washington County, Md., Dec. 20, 1835, and came to Ogle County in 1846. He conducted a harness shop in Mount Morris in the eighties. In 1861, he married Ellen S. Highbarger and they had two sons, Henry H. and Ernest. Mr. Newcomer died in 1880.

DANIEL RIDENOUR, son of John and Nancy Zellers Ridenour, was born at Hagerstown, Md., Nov. 6, 1836, and died in Mount Morris, June 25, 1928, aged near- ly 92 years. During the Civil War, he served in Co. B, 2nd Pa. Artillery, from 1862 to 1865. Soon after the war he came to Mount Morris where he resided con- tinuously for 60 years. In 1873, he mar- ried Susan Rowland and seven children were born to them. Only two of them survived the father, Mrs. E. D. Codding- ton and Mrs. David Paul. The mother died Apr. 7, 1910.


BENJAMIN H. RINE enlisted in Co. I, 140th Ill. Inf., and served until the end of the war. He was born in Cumberland County, Pa., January 5, 1845, and died in Belvidere, Ill., in February, 1933, aged 87 years. He lived in Mount Morris many years, engaged principally in the building business. In about 1880, he purchased the grocery store established by Wm. H. Bull and after several years sold to Holly Clark and Ira Wingert. At a later period he and his son-in-law, C. H. Whitman, conducted a meat market which they later sold to Wishard & Powell. Shortly before the war, he was married to Miss Melissa Fish, and four children were born to them: Myrtle (Mrs. John H. Miller), Anna M. (Mrs. C. H. Whitman), Fred and Eugene. Mrs. Rine passed away in 1909. See picture on page 280.

JAMES H. STEVENS was the last veter- an of the Civil War living in Mount Mor- ris to pass away. On the following page is a picture of the veterans living in Mount Morris in the year 1900. At that time all of these veterans were past 60 years of age, and they gradually passed away one by one, until Mr. Stevens was the sole survivor, past 92 years of age. He was the son of David and Nancy Stevens and was born Nov. 15, 1843, at Waterfall, Pa., and passed away in Mount Morris Jan. 28, 1936. He enlisted in Co. M, 9th Pa. Cavalry, on Feb. 19, 1863, and served until the end of the war. While fighting at Stone River, his horse was shot from under him and he was seriously wounded at Lookout Mountain. In 1866 he married Margaret Ellen Carr and four children were born to them: Orion, Irvin, Virgie (Mrs. Cassius Crowell), and Carrie (Mrs. Fred Middlekauff). The family came to Mount Morris in 1877 and engaged in farming until 1906 when they moved to town. Mrs. Stevens died in March, 1918.

HENRY L. SMITH enlisted in 1863 in Co. D, 2nd Ill. Cav., at Rochelle and served until the close of the war. He was the son of John and Charity Smith, and was born at Warwick, N.Y., Feb. 28, 1831, and died March 8, 1915, aged 84 years. He came to Ogle County in 1857, locating at Flagg Center. He married Martha A. Brace in 1855, who died in 1862, leaving three young sons. On return from the war, he married Rebecca Holly in 1867, and moved to a farm in Mount Morris Township. His second wife died in 1875, leaving two children. He was married a third time in 1878 to Carrie L. Knodle, and to this union three sons and a daugh- ter were born. When he died he was survived by his third wife and three sons: Henry Lee, Guy C., and Jesse H. After leaving the farm, he operated a livery stable in Mount Morris for a number of years.

He was the son of Stephen and Lydia (Wilkins) Smith and was a brother of Mrs. Ira Marshall, Mrs. Mary McCoy, and Chas. D. Smith, for- mer well-known residents of Mount Morris.

SAMUEL G. TRINE was born in Wash- ington County, Md., April 29, 1835, and came to Ogle County in 1848 and worked at his trade as painter. In 1862, Mr. Trine enlisted in Co. F, 92nd Ill. Inf. After 15 months service, he was appointed captain of Co. B, 13th Regiment U. S. Colored troops. Later he enlisted in the Navy. Mr. Trine married Ellen Newcomer and they had three children: Virgil, Ralph and Christian. Ralph Trine became a famous author and wrote a number of books that attained a very large sale.

BENJAMIN F. TRACY enlisted in Feb- ruary, 1864, in Co. H, First Maryland Cavalry, and received wounds in the chin and shoulder. He was born in Franklin Co., Pa., Dec. 23, 1845, and died in Mount Morris Jan 14, 1910, aged 64 years. He came to Mount Morris in 1869, and fol- lowed his trade as carpenter and con- tractor for many years until his death. He served on the village board of trustees several terms and was constable for four years. In 1876, he married Mary Potter, to whom six children were born: Mrs. Mary Rudy (died in 1921), Dennis C., Chester and Madge Emmert. Two others died in childhood. Mrs. Tracy died in April, 1933.


CHAS. UNGER enlisted in the Union Army in Co. K, 21st Pa. Cav., and saw much active service. He was born in . Franklin Co., Pa., Oct. 31, 1846, and died Jan. 10, 1906, aged 59 years. He married Hanna Foster and came with his family to Mount Morris in 1881, where he lived until his death. He had two sons. Harry and Grant. See picture on page 280.


CHAS. R. WELLER served 14 months in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. He was born May 5, 1826, at Mar- tinsburg, W. Va., and died April 22, 1901, aged 74 years. He married Sarah Miller in 1851, and they had two sons, Chas. E. and Clayton. He moved to Pine Creek Township after the war and to Mount Morris five years before his death.

ABRAHAM WEAVER died Oct. 13, 1918, aged nearly 80 years. He was born in Washington County, Md., Dec. 2, 1838, be- ing the last of a family of eight chil- dren. He came to Mount Morris in 1857, made his home with his uncle, Abraham Felker, and attended Rock River Semi- nary. During the Civil War he served in Co. I, 140th Ill. Inf. He was married Feb. 13, 1876, to Jennie Briggs, who died Oct. 30, 1892. Four children were born to them: Lillian, who died in infancy; Mable, who died in 1901 at the age of 21 years; Charles, who is married and lives in Polo; and Grace. Mr. Weaver bought a farm in Rockvale Township in 1870, where he lived until 1904, when the family moved to Mount Morris.

JOHN E. WITHERS, son of Thos. and Elizabeth Withers, was born April 18, 1847, in Blair County, Md., and died Sept. 17, 1928, aged over 81 years. He came to Mount Morris with his parents when four years old, and lived here the remainder of his life. At the outbreak of the Civil War, he enlisted in Co. D, Fourth Illinois Cavalry, and served near- ly four years as a corporal. In 1887, he married Mary Ellen Routzahn, and they had two children, Carl and Mrs. Chas. Moore. He had four step-daughters, Mrs. Henry Simons, Mrs. Walter Bowman, Mrs. F. B. Stark and Mrs. Albert Fowler. Mrs. Withers died in 1927.


THOMAS W. WITHERS, Co. H, 34th Ill. Inf. Died 1880.


JACOB H. WITHERS died March 6, 1915, aged 73 years. He was born in Blair County, Pa., Jan. 25, 1842. He came to Mount Morris with his parents in 1853 and resided here continuously until the time of his death. Shortly after the break- ing out of the Civil War he enlisted in Co. H, 34th Ill. Inf., continuing until the end of the struggle. Mr. Withers was twice married, his first wife dying in 1897. To this union were born six chil- dren, three of whom survived him, Mrs. Hugh Douglas, Mrs. Frank Reitchstein and Howard Withers. See picture on page 280.
