A. E. CANODE died Jan. 18, 1907, aged nearly 75 years. He was born near Green- castle, Pa., June 2, 1832, and was married in June, 1855, to Amelia J. Worley. Seven sons and two daughters were born to them as follows: James B., Frank, Jennie (Mrs. Theodore Haller), George, Eliza, Victor, Benton, Charles and Martin. Mr. Canode was a carpenter by trade, and was a prominent member of the Masons and the Lutheran Church. He served on several occasions on the village board of trustees.

BRUCE LEROY BRAYTON, son of Ar- thur and Harriet Brayton, was born in Mount Morris, August 13, 1879, and died Feb. 25, 1928, aged 481/2 years. He graduated from Mount Morris High School in 1896 and from Mount Morris College in 1900. Later he attended the University of Illi- nois and the American Academy of Dra- matic Art in New York City. He was suc- cessful as an actor for a number of years and after the death of his father he managed the Brayton fruit farm. In 1915, he married Isabel Grace Morse, who is now living in New York.
WILLIAM D. DAVIS, son of William and Margaret Davis, was born May 26, 1849, at Beaver Creek, Md., and died Oct. 1, 1929, aged 80 years. He came to Ogle County at the age of 12 and became a prosperous farmer, moving to Mount Morris in 1900. He served four terms as President of the Village Board of Trustees. In 1870, he married Susan Coffman and six children were born to them: Mrs. Vernie Shaw, Mrs. Bessie Pittenger, Edward, Frank, Myron and Clyde. Mr. and Mrs. Davis celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary Dec. 1, 1925. Mrs. Davis died April 1, 1926.
GEORGE W. CARR, son of George W. and Margaret (McLean) Carr, was born in Fulton County, Pa., Feb. 10, 1849, and died in Mount Morris Feb. 10, 1931, aged 82 years. He came to Mount Morris when about 22 years of age and in 1876 he mar- ried Ella A. Moats. There were three children, Albert A., and two daughters. who died in infancy. The mother died and in 1885 he married Martha Alexander. There were two children: Mrs. Nora Sat- terfield and Herbert Carr. He engaged in farming until about 20 years before his death, when he moved to Mount Mor- ris.
JOHN M. BARNHIZER died July 8, 1906, aged 62 years. He was born Dec. 28, 1844, in Pine Creek Township. His par- ents were John and Elizabeth Barnhizer, who came from the east in 1838 and set- tled on a farm in Pine Creek, where the subject of this sketch was born and lived for 57 years. He married Mary J. Cod- dington in 1867, and they had one son, Willoughby M., and a daughter who died in infancy. They moved to Mount Mor- ris in 1901.
IRVIN CARR died April 15, 1919, aged 66 years. He was the son of George W. and Margaret Carr and was born near Fort Littleton, Pa., Feb. 15, 1853. He came to Mount Morris when he was 21 years old and in 1879 he married Sarah Angell, to whom nine children were born: Mrs. John Riley, Mrs. Wm. Feltman, Mrs. Olin Stouffer, Mrs. Hugh Griffin, Mrs. Raymond Cain, Clarence, Orval, Glenn and Ralph.
JOHN W. DIERDORFF was born near Gettysburg, Pa., August 18, 1848, and died in Mount Morris, Oct. 3, 1928, aged 79 years. His family moved to Franklin Grove in 1849, where he grew to man- hood. In 1872, he married Hannah Slifer, and eight children were born to them, one dying in infancy. The others were Charles, Vinna, Mabel, Mrs. Flora Plum, Mrs. Olive Miller, Virgil and Russel. Mrs. Dierdorff died on Aug. 13, 1929. The fam- ily moved from Lanark to Mount Mor- ris in 1886.

ABRAM B. DIEHL died January 8, 1915, aged 67 years. He was born at New En- terprise, Pa., Oct. 28, 1847. When seven years of age, his family moved to Ogle County, locating near Maryland. Later he engaged in farming near Mount Morris until 1911, when he retired and moved to town. In 1883, he married Rosa Belle Wagner, and to them were born seven children: Mrs. Martin G. Moats, Lloyd M., Orval W., Wayne H., Jesse W., Earl D., and Errett J.
JOHN G. DOHLEN was born in Mount Morris Township on May 1, 1858, and died May 16, 1925, aged 67 years. He was en- gaged in farming his entire life in the vicinity of Mount Morris except for 13 years, beginning in 1888, when he lived near Ackley, Iowa. In 1884, he married Bengia Genandt, of Adeline, and eleven children were born to them, five of whom preceded the father in death. Those re- maining were Rena C. DeWall, Otto J., Gertrude E. Myers, John G., Henry G., and LeRoy C., together with the mother.
SAMUEL DOMER died July 4, 1898, aged 80 years. He was born at Sharps- burg, Md., Sept. 3, 1818, and came to Illi- nois in 1846, and engaged in making brick. He was married to Elizabeth Steffa in 1847, but she died the following year. He married again in 1852 to Rachel Varner, and eight children were born to them: Martha, married Chas. Reber; Lydia Ann,
died in 1855; Andrew J., living at Bremer- ton, Wash .; William H., died in Mount Morris, Nov., 1934; Samuel Oscar, living in Polo; Franklin V., died in 1932 in Iowa; Frederick W., living at Wichita, Kans .; Sarah A., married Wm. Koontz, living in Mount Morris. They lived on a farm near Leaf River for a period until 1876, when they moved to the farm home west of Mount Morris, where they lived until 1895, when they moved to town.
DANIEL EVERSOLE was born near Harper's Ferry, April 19, 1829, and died in Mount Morris, Aug. 24, 1913, aged past 84 years. He came to Ogle County in 1846 and worked for nine years as a farm hand. He then purchased a farm five miles west of Mount Morris, where he raised his family, then retired to Mount Morris for the remainder of his life. In 1859, he married Catherine Buser, and seven children were born to them: Dr. Gerry Eversole, Douglas (died in 1914), Anna (Mrs. Nevin Roeder), Daniel B. (died in 1932), Minerva (Mrs. Chas. Dickinson), Ivey (Mrs. N. E. Buser, died in 1919), and one child that died in in- fancy. Mrs. Eversole died in 1905.
DANIEL B. EVERSOLE, son of Daniel and Katherine (Buser) Eversole, was born near Shannon, Ill., Feb. 9, 1863, and died in Mount Morris May 20, 1932, aged 69 years. Most of his life was spent in or near Mount Morris, where he followed the vocations of farmer and carpenter, and the last eleven years in the bindery at the Kable plant. In 1917, he married Miss Zella Mitchell, who survives. There are no children.
JOHN H. FRENCH, for nearly 60 years a resident of Mount Morris, was born Aug- ust 12, 1837, in Washington County, Md., and died at Freeport, Ill., March 23, 1925. aged over 87 years. He was the son of John and Elizabeth (Davis) French. The

father was a veterinary surgeon and a government inspector of horses during the Civil War. At the Battle of Gettys- burg, he was captured by the Confeder- ates, after which all trace of him was lost. The son came to Mount Morris in March, 1865, and for many years conduct- ed a truck farm in the west end of town. He served six years on the village board of trustees. He was married in 1863 to Matilda Hause and three children were born: Samuel (deceased), a daughter who preceded him in death, and a daugh- ter Ida Ellen (Mrs. Thomas Holmes), of Freeport, with whom he lived the last seven years. Mrs. French died in 1918.
BENJAMIN H. FRIDLEY was born in Washington County, Md., Jan. 19, 1832, and died in Mount Morris Oct. 31, 1923, aged nearly 92 years. He came to Mount Morris with his parents when only six years old, and lived in or near Mount Morris for the remainder of his long life. He owned and operated a farm southeast of Mount Morris for many years. In 1871, he was married to Catherine Emmert, and six children were born to them, two of whom died in infancy. Those surviving the father were John E., Bessie, Mattie (Mrs. Luther Garber) and Benjamin F. The mother died in 1892 and about ten years later Mr. Fridley married Martha E. Fridley. He was a loyal and consistent member of the Old Order Brethren Church for many years.
SAMUEL M. ESHELMAN was a trusted employe for many years of the Brethren Publishing House while located in Mount Morris and accompanied the plant to Elgin when it was moved to that city in 1899, where he passed away.
HENRY J. FARWELL was president of the Mount Morris School Board from 1865 to 1890, and was instrumental in the building of the original stone building in 1868. Mr. Farwell was the son of Henry and Nancy (Jackson) Farwell and was born May 24, 1821, in Steuben County, N.Y. He was educated in Mount Morris and for a time was in the mercantile busi- ness, having bought the interest of Enoch Wood of the firm name of Wood & Petrie. The name was changed to Petrie & Far- well. The business was later sold to Coff- man Bros. Mr. Farwell then engaged in farming and stock raising on the fine homestead, one mile south of Mount Morris. One of Mr. Farwell's brothers was the well-known merchant prince of Chicago, John V. Farwell. He was mar- ried in 1851 to Mrs. Mahala J. Baker, and four children were born to them. Charles, William, George V. and Lillie (Mrs. Har- ry Cushing). Mr. Farwell died in 1890, aged 69 years, and Mrs. Farwell died in 1915.
CHARLES CRAWFORD was born Nov. 17, 1838, at Springville, N. Y., and died in Mount Morris, April 1, 1925, aged over 86 years. He spent his early years on the farm and at teaching. In 1873, he came to Mount Morris and was married to Frances E. Hoverland, who was teaching school here. They located on a farm near Marshalltown, Iowa, but Mr. Crawford suffered a sunstroke which permanently injured his eyes. They finally returned to Mount Morris. where they remained. They had no children of their own, but adopted a daughter, Cornelia. Mrs. Craw- ford died in 1922.
JAMES C. GIBBS, son of Jacob and Ann Virginia Gibbs, was born in the State of Maryland, May 20, 1864, and died in Mount Morris, Oct. 18, 1928, aged 64 years. In 1880, he came to Pine Creek Township, and resided in or near Mount Morris the balance of his life, engaged mostly in farming, except seven years when he lived in Aurora. In 1888, he was married to Rosa Ridenour, to whom four children were born: Charles, Grace Horst, Gertrude Bearman and Marie Zumdahl.

WILLOUGHBY M. FELKER was born near Hagerstown, Md., Feb. 3, 1844, and died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Fred Watts, in Mount Morris, Dec. 17, 1922, aged nearly 79 years. He was of a large family of children born to Abra- ham and Catherine Felker, who came to Mount Morris in 1855 and settled on a farm north of Mount Morris. Mr. Felker was married to Alice Butterbaugh in 1868, and they had five children, Mrs. Olive Long, Henry Felker, Mrs. Fannie Watts, Merritt Felker, Mrs. Edna McNeel, and a daughter who died in 1918. In 1918, they celebrated their 50th wedding anni- versary. Mrs. Felker died in 1919.
HENRY FRAWERT, son of Fred and Wil- helmina Frawert, was born in Germany, July 21, 1842, and died in Mount Morris, April 20, 1927, aged nearly 85 years. He came to America when he was a young man and continued to live in or near Mount Morris until his death. In 1872, he was married to Charlotte Rohns and seven children were born to them: Henry, William, August, Mary, Fred, Edward and Clint.
SOLOMON E. DAVIS died Oct. 3, 1897, aged 72 years. He was born at Boonsboro, Md., Dec. 28. 1825, and came to Mount Morris in 1855, where he resided the bal- ance of his life with the exception of several years. He was married in 1848 to Rebecca Fletcher and they became the parents of twelve children as follows: Laura J. (married Thomas Avey), Ida E., Lewis E. (married Nellie White), Floy L. (married James H. Depue), Otho F. (married Katherine McMullen), Chas. V., Mary D. (married Albert Lookabaugh), Eva C. (married Freedline Petrie), Hat- tie M. (married James Miller), Ben G. (married Annie Sharp), Seymour S. (married Elizabeth O'Leary), Florence R. (married Fred Long) .
DANIEL EMMERT was born near Ha- gerstown, Md., May 19, 1850, and died in Mount Morris, August 1, 1923, aged 73 years. His father, Elder Michael Emmert, came with his family to Ogle County in 1859 and purchased a farm five miles north of Mount Morris, and Daniel spent the rest of his life in or near Mount Mor- ris. In 1873, he married Emma A. Porter, and five children were born to them: Mrs. G. W. Kieffaber, Elsie Emmert, George C. and Harry L. One daughter died in infancy.
KATHERINE McNEILL HOFFMAN, whose career as a singer in concert and opera gave her a national reputation, was born in Mount Morris. She was the daughter of Dr. Francis A. and Barbara (Wagner) McNeill, and she was known professionally Kitty McNeill. She studied voice in Chicago, Boston and Paris and made her debut in America with John A. McCaul Opera Company, with which she sang several seasons. She was also with the Tavaray Opera Company, with Jules Levy, the Innes Band and the Metropolitan Opera Com- pany. She possessed a rich, powerful con- tralto of wide range and great sweet- ness. In 1900 Miss McNeill was married to Dr. Walter Hoffman of Honolulu, and they lived in that city for many years. Later they moved to Chicago where Mrs. Hoffman died in 1937.

OLIVER C. GLOSS was born near Rohr- ersville, Md., Feb. 16, 1864, and died June 1, 1925, aged 61 years. He came to Mount Morris when 25 years of age, and con- tinued to reside here until the time of his death. In 1878 he married Florence B. Stonebraker, who preceded him in death in 1911. They had three children, Elsie, who died young; Clayton, who died in 1935; and Bertha.
SAMUEL M. GRIMM died Feb. 27, 1919, aged 68 years. He was born in Rohrers- ville, Md., Nov. 26, 1850, and came to Mount Morris when a young man, where he followed the trade of plasterer. In 1871, he married Sarah C. Rowe, and they had one son, Harvey.
CLAYTON G. GLOSS, son of Oliver and Florence Stonebraker Gloss, was born on a farm north of Mount Morris, July 16, 1881, and died Feb. 28, 1935, aged 53 years. He attended school in Mount Morris, in- cluding Mount Morris College, and for more than 30 years was a valued employe in the pressroom of Kable Brothers
Company. For many years he was a mem- ber of the local band in the capacity of bass drummer. In 1910, he married Miss Elizabeth Kline, and they had two chil- dren, Robert and Virginia.
WILLIAM HARLEY HEDGES, son of Samuel and Eleanor Hedges, was born at Hedgeville, W.Va., Nov. 20, 1849, and died in Mount Morris, Oct. 22, 1935, aged nearly 86 years. He came to Mount Morris when a young man and followed the vocation of well-driller until he was forced to re- tire because of old age. He was unmar- ried.
JONATHAN HIESTAND died Feb. 5, 1918, aged 75 years. He was the son of Henry and Elizabeth (Newcomer) Hies- tand and was born in Mount Morris Township Nov. 21, 1842. He attended the district school and Rock River Semi- nary. He taught school and engaged in farming in his early life and moved to Mount Morris in 1884. He served as jus- tice of the peace for many years and traveled quite extensively. He never mar- ried.
WILLIAM HOLSINGER, son of John and Barbara Holsinger, was born at Roar- ing Springs, Pa., Aug. 10, 1855, and died Dec. 3, 1935, aged 80 years. He was only six months old when his parents brought him to Mount Morris, and he resided in the community continuously for nearly 80 years. In 1890, he married Florence Knodle, and two children were born to them: Ray and a daughter who died in infancy.
ARTHUR C. IRVIN died March 2, 1919, aged nearly 61 years. He was the son of Addison and Matilda Irvin and was born in Chicago March 28, 1858. He came to Mount Morris when a young man and lived here the remainder of his life. In 1883, he was married to Julia Weller, whose death occurred in 1907. They had one son, Claire, who was in the army in France when his father died. For over thirty years, Mr. Irvin was a railway mail clerk on the Burlington. He was a mem- ber of the Masons.

MRS. MARGARET GRANGER, a re- spected colored lady, was brought to Mount Morris as a slave by the Samuel Hitt family in 1937 when she was a young girl. She died Feb. 11, 1925, at the age of approximately 100 years, but there is no record of exactly when and where she was born. She never saw her father or mother after she was taken away from them. She lived with the Hitt family un- til Miss Margaret married Prof. D. J. Pinckney, the first principal of Rock River Seminary, and she moved with them to their home in the seminary building. The Pinckney children grew up under her care. Later she was married to John Granger and Mr. Hitt gave her the two lots on Main Street where she lived the remainder of her life. This was the only colored family that lived in Mount Morris for many years. There were nine children who grew up in Mount Morris. John C., Laura, Daniel, Maxie, Joseph, Bud, Grace, Vina. The father, John Granger, served in Co. D, 8th Ill. Inf., during the Civil War. He died in 1882.
FONETICUS JACOBS, son of Enos and Rachel Jacobs, was born March 10, 1855, near Adeline, and died Sept. 28, 1933, aged 781/2 years. He was of a family of 11 chil- dren. He engaged in farming in the vicin- ity of Adeline until 1907, when he moved to Mount Morris. In 1878, he married Mina L. Avery and seven children were born to them: Mrs. Elva Buser, Enos (who died in 1931), Mrs. Grace Klontz, Mrs. Gertrude Peugh, John Jacobs, and two children that died in infancy. On Jan. 1, 1928, Mr. and Mrs. Jacobs cele- brated their fiftieth wedding anniversary. Mrs. Jacobs died June 19, 1937.
JOHN H. HANSTINE, son of Adam and Margaret (Zollinger) Hanstine, was born near Gettysburg, Pa., Oct. 11, 1850, and died at Mount Morris, Dec. 19, 1931, aged 81 years. His family moved from Penn- sylvania to Indiana and later to near Polo. He attended Rock River Seminary and became a minister of the United
Brethren Church for several years, then represented the American Bible Society. In 1873, he married Mahala Bovey, and four children were born to them: Grace (Mrs. Elmer Clapper), Edith and Clar- ence, one son dying in infancy. Mrs. Han- stine passed away in 1931.
NICHOLAS T. KOONTZ, son of Nicholas and Elizabeth Koontz, was born in Bruce- ville, Md., April 20, 1839, and died in Mount Morris, March 5, 1926, aged nearly 87 years. He came to Illinois when a young man and during the greater part of his life worked at his trade of black- smith in Mount Morris. He was married in 1865 to Susan M. Mumma and five children were born to them: Chas. C., who died in infancy; Mary E., who died in 1895; William W., Grace (Mrs. John Marshall) and Lulu (Mrs. M. L. Noble). The mother died in 1898. In 1900, Mr. Koontz was married to Anna Slifer, who died in 1920.
HALE D. JUDSON was born at Wau- paca, Wis., in 1853, and died in Texas in March, 1911. At the age of eleven years, he came to Mount Morris to reside with his uncle, F. B. Brayton, with whose fam- ily he resided for about eight years. He attended Rock River Seminary during 1871 and 1872 and assisted in his uncle's store and postoffice. When the railroad was built through Mount Morris, A. W. Brayton became the first agent and Mr. Judson became night operator. Later he became day operator when Mr. Brayton resigned, and worked his way up with the railroad until he became division superintendent of the C. B. & Q. Railroad, with headquarters at Aurora. Mr. Judson was married to Fannie Reed of Rochelle, who lived less than a year. Several years later he married Josephine Gould, and they had three children.

JOHN A. KABLE died Oct. 1, 1919, at the age of 72 years. He was born June 27, 1847, in Northumberland County, Pa., and was the eldest son of nine children of Christian and Esther Bowman Kable. He spent his boyhood days in Pennsyl- vania and worked as a coal miner. The family moved to Carroll County, Ill., after the war, and the father died soon after, leaving the subject of this sketch, as the eldest son, to care for the mother and younger brothers and sisters. He was married June 27, 1872, to Elizabeth Ann Speicher, and eight children were born to them-Allie, who died in 1906, a son who died in infancy, Minnie (Mrs. Chas. Niman), Lulu (Mrs. Harry Longman), Harvey J., Harry G., Hazel (Mrs. Milo Zimmerman) and Ruth. The mother died May 7, 1919. Mr. Kable was a carpet weaver by trade and conducted a carpet weaving shop during the entire 27 years that he resided in Mount Morris. The family moved to Mount Morris from Lan- ark, Ill., in 1882.
JOHN T. KANODE died April 4, 1903, aged nearly 69 years. He was born in Frederick County, Md., and came to Illi- nois in 1882, and lived for many years on the farm one mile east of town now owned by Jacob Bonar. He married Amie Haugh in 1864, who died in 1874. To them was born one son, Harry. In 1876, he mar- ried Sarah L. Whetsel.
EDWARD KEEDY died March 1, 1897, age nearly 69 years. He was born in Wash- ington County, Md., July 1, 1828. In 1853, he married Elizabeth Blecker, and in 1869 he brought his family to Mount Morris and settled on his farm a mile east of town, where he died. His wife preceded him in death about five years. There were ten children in the family.
LEVI L. KERNS died July 20, 1900, aged 58 years. He was born in 1842 in Clark County, Ohio, and came to Ogle County in 1855. He married Mary E. Mumma in 1865. He engaged in farming in various
localities until April, 1898, when he came to Mount Morris to take charge of the Old Folks' Home. He had three children, Mrs. Willis Fairlamb, Ada C., and Susie E. (Mrs. Guy Smith).
FERDINAND KING died July 19, 1907, aged 80 years. He was born in Konigsreich, Prussia, May 10, 1827, and came to Mount Morris in 1874, where he bought a small farm northwest of town. In 1855, he mar- ried Louisa Margourtt, to whom six chil- dren were born, four of whom died in early youth, followed by the death of the mother in 1872. The surviving children were Charles King and the late Mrs. Yost Frey.
WILLIAM H. KEEDY, son of Edward and Elizabeth (Blecker) Keedy, was born at Boonsboro, Md., June 6, 1867, and died July 26, 1922, aged 55 years. He came with his parents to Mount Morris when but three years of age and lived in or near the village the remainder of his life, engaged most of the time in farming. In February 1902, he was married to Miss Edith Young, who survives him. They had no children, but they took David Fridley into their home when a lad and regard- ed him as their son.
WILLIAM LOHAFER, SR., died De- cember 31, 1911, aged 731/2 years. He was born May 20, 1838, in Hummersan, Ger- many, and came to America while in his teens. He was married Oct. 18, 1860, to Trientje Reiken, and eleven children were born to them. Five of the children preceded the father in death. Those which remained were Mrs. Carrie Burner, Mrs. Rosa Steinmann, Mrs. Nettie McCay, Mrs. Pearl Asay, William and Henry.
WILLIAM LOHAFER, son of William and Trientje Lohafer, was born at Mount Morris, April 3, 1868, and died Jan. 15, 1932, aged nearly 64 years. He engaged in farming and stock raising during his en-

tire life, mostly on the old Lohafer home- stead just west of town. He was a talented musician, being a cornet soloist of con- siderable ability and for many years was a member of the local bands. He was un- married.
ANDREW J. LONG died Jan. 4, 1918, aged 76 years. He was born in Washing- ton County, Md., Oct. 15, 1841. He was the son of Daniel and Elizabeth Long, and was the youngest of twelve children. When a child, his parents moved from Maryland to Pine Creek Township, and later to a farm six miles north of Mount Morris. He spent nearly all his life in or near Mount Morris. In 1867, he married Louisa Weller, and they had three chil- dren. They were Fred Long and Mrs. Grace Rodgers, and one child who died in infancy. In 1874, Mrs. Long died, and thirteen years later Mr. Long married Mrs. Susan Miller, who died Nov. 11, 1914
FRANK F. KNODLE, son of Jacob and Anna (Little) Knodle, was born in Mount Morris, April 29, 1854, and died May 28, 1926, aged 72 years. His mother died when he was very young and he was reared in the home of his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Little. He became a telegraph operator and for a period was in charge of the local station. He was a talented musician and for many years was connected with the musical organi- zations of Mount Morris. In later years he was engaged in the engraving of mu- sic plates for various publishers. In 1877, he married Cora B. Crowell and they had one son, Floyd. Mrs. Knodle passed away in January, 1936.
ARCHIBALD S. McCOY died August 17, 1913, aged 64 years. He was the son of James B. and Elizabeth McCoy, and was born in Mount Morris, January 15, 1849. He was born, lived and died on the old McCoy homestead, just south of Mount Morris. He was married to Lura A. Neff and they had three children, Mrs. Jelis Stearns, Jesse and Edmund.
WILLIS S. MUMMA, the eldest son of Samuel and Louisa Mumma, was born in Pine Creek Township, Dec. 2, 1870. He attended the Mount Morris Public School and Mount Morris College. In 1889, he entered the employ of Nathaniel E. Buser to learn the carpenter trade and in 1898 became a partner of Mr. Buser. He was married March 21, 1896, to Anna L. Rice, who survives him. Mr. Mumma died April 27, 1923, aged 52 years.
