There are three other cemeteries in the vicinity of Mount Morris where quite a few Mount Morris people are buried. The old Rice Cemetery is lo- cated about three miles north of Mount Morris, but no burials have been made there for many years and a large num- ber of bodies have been moved.

About four miles northeast of Mount Morris is the Silver Creek Cemetery adjacent to the Church of the Brethren. Quite a large number of deceased mem- bers of that denomination in Mount Morris are buried there.

The Salem Cemetery is located about three miles southeast of Mount Morris and is also a Brethren Church burial ground where a few Mount Morris members have been buried.

Chapter 13 WAR HISTORY

T HE UNITED STATES is a peace- loving country and the great ma- jority of her people are bitterly opposed to militarism and war, and yet within the comparatively short period of 100 years since the founding of Mount Morris, our country has been engaged

in three wars, one bloody civil war and two wars with foreign nations. In all three of these conflicts, Mount Morris did her full share and as complete a record as possible is here presented of those who participated in these wars and the regiments to which they belonged.

THE CIVIL WAR

TN the year 1861, as every one knows, the United States was plunged into a long and bloody war-the South pitted against the North in terrific struggle, lasting over four long years. During this time President Lincoln made eleven separate calls for volunteers to help suppress the rebellion. Among the 3,339,748 men who responded to these calls were many loyal citizens from Mount Morris Township, who left their homes and families and risked their

LIEUT. ISAAC ALLEN served in Co. D, 14th Ill. Cav. He was the son of Isaac and Mary Allen, and was born Feb. 11, 1816, in Howard County, Md. The family moved to Mount Morris in 1852. In 1840, he married Eveline Titlo, and there were five children: Jesse O., George Q., Chas. H., Mary and Clara O. He was an insur- ance agent and teacher. He died in 1886.

THOMAS J. AVEY served in Co. H., 34th Ill. Inf. He died March 31, 1910, aged nearly 73 years. He was born near Hagers- town, Md., in 1937, and came to Mount Morris in 1859. He married Laura J. After the war, many veterans who had enlisted from other states and local- ities came to Mount Morris, and the following list includes all soldiers and sailors who either at one time or an- other lived in Mount Morris, regardless of whether they enlisted from here or not. This list is given in alphabetical order, together with the regiments and companies in which they served.

ALFRED R. BINKLEY enlisted in 1864 in Co. I, 140th Ill. Inf., and served until the end of the war. He was born in Wash- ington County, Md., Jan. 13, 1847, and died Feb. 28, 1905, aged 58 years. He was the son of Daniel and Catherine (Weaver) Binkley and came to Ogle County when he was 16 years of age. He was married Feb. 12, 1878, to Laura V. Sprecher, daughter of Philip and Letha (Castle) Sprecher. Mrs. Binkley, due to her gra- cious ways, industry and economy, was a great aid to her husband during the 20 years he was engaged in business in Mount Morris. He purchased a restau- rant in 1880 and gradually added a line of groceries. He continued for 15 years and then sold out to Jacob G. Miller. He started in the grocery business again in 1896 with Oliver Watts, but soon sold to
