The nomination of J. R. Mohler for county superintendant by the Popu- list convention was made unanimous. The nomination of G. W. Harrington for representative was rejected. The nominations of Felix O'Neil for repre- sentative and Wm. Heffner for commissioner were made unanimous. Upon the refusal of the Populist convention to receive Elliott Davis as county at- torney Nathan Jones was placed in nomination.

The following resolutions were adopted:
We, your committee on resolution beg leave to submit the following:
First, The People's Party of Brown county, in convention assembled, re-affirms the princi- ples enunciated in the People's party platform adopted at St. Louis, July 22, 1896, the Free Silver platform adopted at the National Free Silver convention at the same time and place and the Chicago platform adopted by the Democratic convention July 7 1896, and we hereby declare the financial question the greatest question before the American people.
Second, Ne hereby endorse the wise, patriotic, honest and able administration of Governor L. D. Lew lling and believe it will compare favorably with any administration the state has ever had.
Third, We hereby pledge the nominee of this convention, if elected, to recognize the constitu- tionality of the law of 1891 relative to the salaries of the county officers and to accept the salaries therein named in full payment of all demands for services rendered the country.
Fourth, We commend the course of the honest, eloquent and patriotic champion of the cause of the masses, Wm. J Bryan and pledge the party of Brown county to use all honorable means to secure his triumphant election to the presidency of the United States.
Grant W. Harrington introduced the following resolution which was unan- mously adopted:
Resolved, That we commend the Hon. A. W. Lichty for his efforts as a member of the Board of County Commissioner to recover into the treasury of the county the illegal fees retained by the ex-county officers and we pledge the people of Brown county that is if they elect the Hon. Wm. "Heffner as county Commissioner, thus giving the Populist Party control of the board of county commissioners that all legal means shall be employed to recover for the county the illegal fees in question.
Joe R. Mohler, G. E Mitchell and Howard Jackson were nominated for county superintendent and the vote resulted Mohler, 93, Mitchell 19, Jackson 11 and Mohler was declared the nominee.
Felix O'Neil and Grant W. Harrington were nominated for representative and the vote resulted Harrington 66 and O'Neil 62. The Democrats refused to ratify the nominated of Mr. Harrington and a second ballot was taken result- ing O'Neil 85, Keller 12, Macho 3, Foster 2.

The Democratic nominations of Will Hazel forclerk of the court and Chas. Calnan for probate judge were endorsed. The nomination of Elliott Davis for county attorney was rejected and Nathan Jones was nominated.
SEPTEMBER 8-10. Fifteenth Annual Encampment Sons of Veterans at Louisville Ky. Grant W. Harrington is one of the Kansas delegates.
SEPTEMBER 12. The Democratic and People's Party senatorial convention meet at Troy and name Jas. Falloon for State Senator.
SEPTEMBER 15-18. Annual Fair.
SEPTEMBER 26. Republican senatorial convention at Troy. Brown coun- delegates are instructed for John Schilling and vote 61 ballots. Jolın Fulton is then nominated.

JANUARY 11. C. D. Lamme is elected Treasurer of the Hiawatha Board of Education to fill the vacancy caused by the death of C. H. Janes.
JANUARY 30. Hiawatha Lodge I. O. O. F. celebrated its 25th anniver- sary.
MARCH 14. Wreck on the Missouri Pacific near Hiawatha in which Engi- neer Edward Nye, fireman Lawrence O'Conner and J. B. Meador lost their lives.
MARCH 17-18. Brown county Sunday school convention at Hiawatha. The report of the secretary shows 56 schools, 762 officers and teachers, 5431 scholars, 3659 average attendance. Officers are elected as follows: President, E. H. Keller; Vice President, B F. Dickinson; Secretary, A. J. Leibengood; Treasurer, Wm. Knapp; Executive committee Rev. A. Cassleman, J. W. Clark, Ed Dyche, H. Hiskey.
MARCH 16. G. H. Valentine and twenty-nine others petition to have Powhattan declared a city of the third class. The prayer is granted and an election for city officers is ordered for May 4th and J. H. Kinnear, L. B. Purk- heiser and John Powell are appointed as judges and George Valentine and S. T. Holcomb asclerks. J. B. Little, S P. Roup and J. K. McGiunis are appointed to canvass the returns.
APRIL 5. Morrill city election results in election of M. W. Meyers, mayor; G. Kiplinger, clerk; W. S. Willard, police judge; C H Marion, mar- shal; O. E. Shadel street commissioner; Lloyd Mc Millian, C. W. Flickinger, U. S. Davis, M. C. Lint, Clark M. Moore councilmen. D. A. Vanderpool is ap- pointed city treasurer.

MAY 3. The stockholders of the Brown County Fair Association elect di- rectors as follows: G. Y. Johnson, J. W. Babbitt, W. W. Letson, S. F. Wal- ters, C. W. Wellcome, John H. Meyers. E. Hoye, Wm Hixon and Anderson McCoy. The board organized by the election of G. Y. Johnson, president; C. W. Welcome vice president; Grant W. Harrington, secretary; Frank Meisenheimer, treasurer and Eli Moser, financial secretary.
MAY 6. The publication of the Annals of Brown county is commenced in the DEMOCRAT.
-The Kansas Classis of the Reformed church hold its twenty-second session in Hiawatha.
MAY 14. Jerry Mahoney. of Reserve commits suicide.
MAY 15. H. B. Eckam, of Reserve. absconds.
MAY 30. Memorial Day is observed at Hiawatha, Horton and Robinson. Gov. Morrill delivers the address at Robinson.
MAY 13. The fair grounds are advertised for sale on May 28th to satisfy the mortgage held by the Morrill & Janes Bank and a new company has been organized to buy them and keep a fair going in Brown county. When it was found that the mortgage could not be carried any longer the plan of making an assessment upon the stock large enough to take up the claims against the company was discussed, but this met with so much opposition that it was abandoned. Most of the old stockholders did not want to carry the load any longer.
Thirty citizens were then found who agreed to take $100 worth of stock in a new association provided the grounds could be purchased for $3,000 They are C. W. Wellcome, G Y. Johnson, W. O. Noble.
