MATTAPOISETT
It may be surprising to many to learn that Mattapoi- sett built more whale ships than any other port, and in its day was world famous for its shipyards. Many of New Bedford's and Nantucket's finest whalers came from the several yards of Mattapoisett, and some ship- masters of New Bedford hailed from the latter place. To illustrate the workmanship of Mattapoisett, some- one from the town was visiting Nantucket and, without telling where he was from, he asked an old whaleman where Nantucket got most of her ships. The reply was "Oh, we got 'em from everywhere; but we got our best from a little place near New Bedford, a town called Mattapoisett!" The skillful artisans of Matta- poisett also built ships for Boston, New York, Salem, Newport, Providence, New London and Cape Cod ports. A story is told that a man, barefoot, once applied for a job as a ship-carpenter and as proof of his skill placed one foot with toes spread apart over the edge of a board and brought his axe down in the spaces be- tween the toes. The writer of this tale winds up by saying that he got the job. In fact, Mattapoisett was once a village of ship builders. It is said that at one time four hundred men could be seen on their way to work in the shipyards and allied industries.
It is not surprising, therefore, that the town seal pic- tures a vessel on the stocks. Probably no special ship was selected. The Indian looks as if he were admiring the vessel, but a canoe was his favorite craft. He would indeed have been surprised to see a whaler equipped to go to sea. Later, however, the Indians became pro- ficient whalemen, as the accounts from Nantucket hand down to us.
4
A fitting reminder of the town's hey-dey can be seen in Shipyard Park, the site of the Holmes' yard, where the missenmast of the Wanderer serves as a flag pole. Here, the Wanderer was built by Jonathan Holmes in 1878, for New Bedford owners. She was the last square rigged whaler sent to sea, but she got no farther on her last trip than the Island of Cuttyhunk. Her officers were on shore when a storm came up and no one on board was familiar enough with the square rigged sails to be able to man the yards to enable the vessel to escape being wrecked on the rocks on August 26, 1924. The Trust Company was fortunate enough to procure one of the cabin doors of the Wanderer for the closet of one of the bank's private officers. We also have a picture of her when she was ready to sail, and another showing her on the rocks.
Others of the more than 300 ships built there should be especially mentioned. One of the earliest, con- structed for a New Bedford merchant was called Thom- as and was built by the well-known and successful Mattapoisett firm of Wilson Barstow in 1805. Wilson Barstow also turned out the largest vessel ever built there, named George Lee, for the firm of Cabot, Lee & Co. of Boston. The fast-sailing Cicero has a special interest for the Trust Company for her quarterboard hangs over the fireplace in one of the officer's rooms. She was built in 1823 by Barstow and Holmes and for fifty-five years sailed from New Bedford. Another whaler which made a name for herself was Gideon Barstow's Acushnet, owing to the fact that on her maiden voyage one of the crew was Herman Melville who wrote the far-famed "Moby Dick." On one voyage of the bark Platina, a pure white whale was killed; ex- cept for the white whale in the novel "Moby Dick" there is no other record of a whale of this kind being seen. The Platina was built in Mattapoisett.
5
Paintings of the barks President and Gazelle, both built by Wilson Barstow, hung in the Trust Company for many years and a painting of the full rigged whale ship Niger, also built by Wilson Barstow, is reproduced on a pitcher in one of the banking rooms and on a plate in the Trust Department.
However, the Ocean Rover was one of the most conspicuous whalers built in Mattapoisett, because of her capture and destruction by the Confederate raid- er Alabama. The settlement of the Alabama claims by the British Government led to considerable prosper- ity among the claimants, results of which exist in Mat- tapoisett to this day.
The earliest shipbuilders to arrive on the scene were William Rotch and then Charles Stetson in 1752. Many others followed and a good many failed, for the majority of whalers were built on the prospects of a successful voyage.
While there are many descendants of the old ship- builders now living in Mattapoisett and many of their houses still stand as landmarks, there seems to be only one actual relic of the shipbuilding business. This is the old building used as the shipyard workshop, with space for building whale boats and with a sail-loft overhead. It stood in the Benjamin Barstow shipyard in Cannonville and was later moved to its present loca- tion in Mr. Mahoney's lumber yard. The old building is intact with its hand hewn beams supported by oak "knees".
Edward Cunningham, a Director of the State Street Trust Company, a summer resident of Mattapoisett and interested in the subject of whaling, helped greatly in compiling this chapter.

Report of the Selectmen and Board of Public Welfare
To the Citizens of the Town of Mattapoisett:
In accordance with Section 49, Chapter 40 of the General Laws, your Board of Selectmen herewith sub- mit the following reports of the various departments and officers to this Board.
On March 13, 1951, the Board organized as follows: Lester A. Crampton, Chairman Board of Selectmen and Public Welfare, George S. White, Clerk.
The list of Jurors by Chapter 234, Section 4 of the General Laws.
We also submit a report of a State Audit of Accounts of the Town of Mattapoisett for the period from No- vember 16, 1950 to October 27, 1951 made in accord- ance with the provisions of Chapter 44 General Laws.
The Board wishes to state at this time that a copy of the proposed deed, as prepared by the General Ser- vices Administration, conveying a portion of the Ned's Point Reservation to the Town was approved by the Board of Selectmen in November 1951. The purchase of the valuable piece of property by the Town is being held up pending final approval by the proper author- ities in Washington.
As the next few pages concern the Selectmen's de- partment, we would refer the reader to other parts of the report for other information.
Considering all in all, the Year 1951 has been ex- tremely fruitful and progressive for the Town of Mat- tapoisett. We now have a new School House Addition
15
and also a new Fire Station for which we may be justly proud. We have also witnessed the growth in "com- munity spirit" which will prove extremely beneficial to the healthy growth of our Town.
It is fitting and a pleasure to extend to one and all the Board's thanks and appreciation for their valuable and cooperative help in our efforts to administer the Town's Affairs for the interest of all. We especially wish to sincerely thank those organizations who con- tributed their aid and support in erecting the search- lights which are used for community "square dancing" at Shipyard Park.
