79th ANNUAL REPORT 1934. 1
LL
Report of the Librarian to the Directors of the Newburyport Public Library :
I submit a report of the work of the Library for the year 1934, being the 79th Annual Report. The figures included in the following report represent the condition of the Library as of December 15, 1934.
ACCESSIONS AND GIFTS
During the year, 1,434 volumes have been added to the Library. According to last year's report the Library contained 70,603 books. 1934 increase brings the total to 72,037.
887 new titles were purchased from the income of funds, 197 items were donated, the majority of which are titles new to the Library. 136 titles have been replaced from the income of the Colby Fund.
The most notable gift of the year is set No. 76, of the Foster Hall Reproductions, being three boxes of facsimiles of songs, compositions and arrangements by Stephen Collins Foster issued by Josiah Kirby Lilly in 1933 at Indianapolis, Indiana, and pre- sented to the Library by Mr. Lilly.
The above acquisitions have been distributed throughout the various departments of the Library, largest additions being made to the collection of current literature, in- cluding standard subjects and fiction. 35 items have been added to the collection of Newburyport material, including books, pamphlets, programs, catalogs, etc. Additions have also been made to the Reference Collection, the Music Collection, the Children's Collection, and the Emma L. Andrews Branch.
It may be mentioned that services to the public could be profitably extended in many ways if a part of the annual appropriation from city funds could be made ac- cessible for the purchase of additional books. This suggestion for extending the book resources of the Library may be considered in relation to the fact that the Library turns over to the City Treasurer fine money on overdue books. Between December 15, 1933 and December 15, 1934, $494.80 has been so turned over.
REGISTRATION AND CIRCULATION
There are at present about 5,000 persons registered as regular users of the Library. Of these about 800 have registered in the Children's Room, 294 of them new during 1934.
The number of books issued during the year for home use was 114,508, a decrease of 14,418 from last year. Of these 24,768 were issued in the Children's Room, 8,804 through the Emma L. Andrews Branch. Books have been borrowed for the use of readers through the Inter Library Loan System from Massachusetts Division of Public Libraries, the Boston Public Library and the Libraryj of Congress.
CHANGES DURING THE YEAR
A number of changes in the arrangement of materal, and the organization of work have been made during the year. The reference collection has been removed from the former Reference Room on the first floor to an alcove to the right of the stairway on the second floor, making the reference material more accessible for use in connection
157
PUBLIC LIBRARY
with the general collection and the catalog. Plans are being made to develop supple- mentary files in connection with the reference work with the aim of establishing a cen- ter for information of all kinds, including direction in the use of the Library, which will be available to all persons at any time. An altered form of Charging Desk has been installed in place of the old one, and practically all of the books on the second floor have been reshelved to accommodate the growth during the recent past, which made it difficult to maintain the logical sequence of the classification scheme.
Three alcoves have been set aside on the balcony for the older books not frequently in demand, and a beginning has been made toward the establishment of a Treasure Room for items of especial value. The need for an adequate periodical stack is urgent, and the former Reference Room has been set aside for that purpose. The room is not at present properly equipped for convenient reception of the Library's valuable collec- tion of bound periodicals, and it is hoped that the necessary changes can be made a part of next year's improvements. Much of the work connected wth the above changes has been done by assistants employed under the local Emergency Relief Administration.
Minor changes have been made in the arrangement of furniture in the Reading Room, Children's Room and Music Room.
With labor supplied through the local Emergency Relief Administration head- quarters the second floor of the Library has been cleaned and refinished, many windows have been repaired and the floors have been stained. On Saturday, April 28, 1934, the Emma L. Andrews Branch was reopened following extensive renovations, also the re- sult of an Emergency Relief Administration project. The work at the Branch has been facilitated through the cooperation of the City Marshal, who has authorized the use of the police car for transportation of books between the Main Library and the Branch.
Reference has been made to the use of relief workers in carrying out many of the changes mentioned, and it should be noted that parts of the routine schedule are at present filled by relief workers. The Librarian is very fortunate to have the advantage of this additional help while making adjustments, and he wishes here to record his appreciation of the fine spirit of cooperation which has been shown without exception. With so many temporary assistants contributing to the activities of the Library it be- comes more and more apparent that the regular staff is not sufficiently large to carry on the work of the Library as it should be conducted. While this condition exists, little or no time can be devoted by them to projects for extending service, or rendering more useful the present collections.
STAFF
On April 16, 1934, John D. Parsons bcame Advisory Librarian after serving for forty-six years as Librarian. On the same date the present Librarian and Secretary took office. Mrs. Sidney Plucinski, left the Library service on March 15, her position being filled by vote of the Board on April 25 by Miss Teresa Castle. Also on April 25 Miss Elizabeth P. Johnson was appointed a regular member of the staff.
Respectfully submitted,
FRANK N. JONES, Librarian.
