HARDING TREMAIN MASON

Mailing Address: c/o News-Week, Rockefeller Center, New York, N. Y. Occupation: Journalism.

December 12, 1933, I was married, in New York City, to Evelyn Henry Stoppani, daughter of Mrs. Rudolph Isler of Wohlen, Switzer- land, and San Francisco, California. When the Sexennial report was being published, I had left the New York Central Railway and was jobless. After an indecent interval of job-seeking, I landed in a reporter's berth on The Daily Press of White Plains, New York. The paper folded up after I had been on the staff two years. In the lean and leery fall of 1932 I learned that some incorrigibly hardy souls were raising money to start a better newsmagazine. (Fancy raising money in 1932!) Amid sceptical laughter and cynical jeers I helped launch the venture. When the first issue slid out on to the turbulent publishing sea in February, 1933, I was aboard with a cabin-boy's rating. Four weeks later every bank in the country closed. But News-Week sailed on; and through all the storms

and droughts of the last twenty-one months it has forged ahead and won prestige for its designers and crew. I've raised my rating to managing editor. I shan't apologize for blowing the magazine's horn because that's the best way I have of blowing my own and producing a personal narrative.

SAUL SELIG MASON

Mailing Address: 54 Nightingale St., Dorchester, Mass. Occupation: Finance.

As branch manager for C. F. Child's & Company, I was just about beginning to feel important when I submitted to a so-called minor nose operation. The complications were major and set me sail- ing well across the river Styx where I bumped Saint Peter, who for five hectic months indulged me in introductions and hand- shakes. These celestial boys have a way of jarring the system, and I'm still recuperating from the shock.

ALFRED THADDEUS MERIAN

Mailing Address: Wayne, Maine. Occupation: Architecture.

With architecture very much in the doldrums I spent the better part of 1931 in that last resort of many young architects, i.e., building the family a house. Throughout 1932 I was in Central and South America on a pleasure trip. 1933 saw me in various occupations: department store, travel, decorating; as architecture was more hope- less than ever. In 1934 I was on active duty, as a first lieutenant in the Field Artillery (Reserves), with the civilian conservation corps, first in Pennsylvania and later in up-state New York. At present I am in Switzerland getting in a bit of skiing.

I returned to my association with Mr. Carlin in the general practice of law at 2 Rector Street, New York City, in the early part of 1933, and here I re- main.

I am projectionist with Technicolor Motion Picture Corporation and Hal E. Roach Studio. After playing the Centennial at Rochester, New York, this summer, we played 58 cities and towns in New York, Pennsylvania, and Ohio. We expect to be back in California in May, and in June, we are booked for the North Cape Cruise of the North German Lloyd - that is if the San Diego Fair does not interfere with our plans. I am still single, and own my home at the above address. I have never run across any of the class of '25, and since my copy of the Harvard Alumni Directory was sent to California, I haven't had a chance to look them up, but I expect to when I return.

FRANCIS LAWRENCE ANTHONY NOWAK

Mailing Address: 7 De Wolf St., Cambridge, Mass. Occupation: Mercantile Business.

I am salesman for the Timken Silent Automatic Company, 110 Cummington Street, Boston. In attempting an autobiography of the long period of time that has elapsed since the Sexennial Report, I find myself drifting away from the sources of truth and fact. My hand constantly strays toward the brush with the pink paint. What changes have taken place in my young life are really not worthy of too much note. I still have my ambitions. I still read the Transcript, the Saturday Evening Post, and the book reviews in the New York Times. Much of my spare time is spent in hoping fervently for the return of the Republican administration in 1937. Politics interest me more and more each day. My reactions to the recent upheavals convince me that the song should have been titled, "Harpy Days Are Here Again." Since leaving the lecture room of the Yard in 1925 I have remained in Cambridge as a citizen in good standing. I have lived within stone-throwing

distance of all the new Houses. The shadow of the present Lowell House tower cuts across my manuscript as the sun sinks in the West. Sundays in Cambridge are no longer silent. The Russian bells of this same tower shatter the stillness of the noon hour with very discordant pealings and tinklings. In spite of bells, towers, and changing faces, the atmosphere here is still the same; it never changes.

HERMAN JOHN OLT

Mailing Address: 627 Belmonte Park, N. Dayton, Ohio. Occupation: Accounting.

The State of Illinois granted me a certified public accountant's certificate in 1932, which lends a bit of gloss to my professional activities, but can't be used as collateral, even for lunch money. The last four years have seen me doing much the same things I was doing at the last reporting, including a substantial amount of traveling over the eastern half of the country. I don't stay long enough in one place to acquire even a wife. Our predecessors in the College and particularly in the Law School, who have found their way to Washington, have provided a host of inquisitors whose insatiable demands for information have kept me working well into many a night. Perhaps I should be grateful to them for improving at least one profession besides that of the counsellor-at-law.

JAMES OTIS

Mailing Address: 59 E. Van Buren St., Chicago, Ill. Occupation: Real Estate.

My ambition seems to be the production of a maximum number of mouths to feed, for since the last report two boys have made their appearance: James Jr., was born July 8, 1931, and Elliott Norris, February 15, 1935. I am still in the property management game with Willoughby & Company, which has at least stalled off starvation so far. I still follow the fire department on every run, day or night, which does not materially help my domestic rela- tions. In the summer I spend all available days and vacations with a fly rod attempting to lure the piscatorial denizens of our fresh water streams to the creel.
