If present indications of indefatigable activity and increasing poundage of the new generation mean anything, I look forward with complacency to the future whether it calls for pick and shovel or a hole in the blue line.

GARDNER COWLES, JR.

Mailing Address: Register and Tribune, Des Moines, Iowa. Occupation: Journalism.

I have been in active newspaper work since graduation as executive editor and vice-president of the Des Moines Register and Tribune. As a sop to my conscience I have devoted many tiresome hours on welfare and relief work in Des Moines. As a trustee of Drake University I am trying to turn an impoverished, provincial college into a "Harvard of the west." I have tried unsuccessfully (as yet) to get John Toulmin to accept the position of girls' ad- viser. May 17, 1933 I was married to Lois Thornburg. A daugh- ter, Lois, was born June 25, 1934.

FRANCIS VALENTINE CRANE

Mailing Address: "Knollwood," South St., Needham, Mass. Occupation: Manufacturing.

Since the Sexennial Report in 1931 a good many sheepskins have passed across the table and I am getting deeper and deeper into the leather business. I am now manager of the raw stock department of Winslow Brothers & Smith Company, Norwood, Massachusetts. In November 1931 Mary and I bought our first pair of Great Pyre- nees dogs from the Pyrenees Mountains of Southern France, and since that time we have imported some twelve or so more to our Basquaerie Kennels. Through our efforts the breed is now recog- nized in this country by the American Kennel Club. Classes are given in all shows and we have elevated four beautiful specimens to the coveted rank of American champions. This introduction and establishment of a new breed of dog in our United States has been tremendously interesting as well as a great deal of hard work. The fruits of our labors are most gratifying, however. Vacation and weekend hobby, besides dog raising and exhibiting, is camping, ac- companied by four or five members of Basquaerie. I belong to the Dedham Country and Polo Club, the Trigger Club, and the Great Pyrenees Club of America.

Austin wrote: "Crowley has just returned from a honeymoon trip around the world, or across an ocean or two in a small boat. His picture appeared, I believe, in a late issue of the Sportsman magazine." Harrison also writing in No- vember said: "Eddie Crowley returned to Boston last spring from a voyage to the Mediterranean in a tiny sailboat. When I last heard from him (May 1934) he had gone to New York." H. T. Mason reported in December 1934 that an account of some of the doings of J. Edward Crowley, Jr. appeared in the sporting section (page 9, column 1) of the New York Times on May 20, 1934. "The article said," wrote Mason, "that Crowley had been sailing about the world since the fall of 1932 in Ochito, a Friendship sloop which he had converted into a ketch while in Greece (his wife was with him on part of the voyage, but returned because of ill health). His tempo- rary address was given as 342 Richmond Road, Douglaston, Long Island. Ed has written at least one article over his own name in Yachting or Rudder or a similar sailing magazine." Leonard L. Robb and Benjamin S. Wood also reported to the secretary that Crowley had been sailing around the world. Crowley himself, like Br'er Rabbitt, has said nothing.]

United States Lawn Tennis Championship, and receiving honorary degrees from Yale, Princeton, Oxford and - no, no; wait a minute. This is what I was going to do in the past ten years. The trouble with these reports is that you're supposed to tell what you actually have done! Well, occasionally I sell long three-hundred word skits to the magazines. I take trips in my car to the movies in South Norwalk, and last summer I won the open tennis championship of the Westport (Connecticut) Y.M.C.A. (doubles). Thus it may be seen that I should count myself lucky in being able to do the things I like to do even though I'm not particularly successful at them. Doubtless no report at this time would be complete without a few words on the depression. Yes, it was bad for the writing business (sometimes jocularly called "game"), too. Of course a freelancer, not having a job, can't be fired from it, but editors, in bad times, can turn contributions down with even greater regularity. At any rate, they could with me, and they did. Things are better now, and I want to go on record as predicting- on second thought, I don't. There's really little to add since 1931. Since then I've done a few radio scripts, and am interested in continuing. At that time I couldn't play the piano at all, whereas now I've learned to play it badly - and get a great deal of fun out of it.

I was married to Elizabeth Sanderson Flagg of Andover, Massa- chusetts June 5, 1931. Children: Elizabeth, born July 14, 1932, and Sterling 3d., January 25, 1934. Having been told that there were amusing things still to be discovered about the ancients, I have lived in Athens since 1931 with the aid of fellowships from Harvard and the Guggenheim Foundation. By means of excavation I have found out several amusing things, which I have written about to the extent of a dozen articles in the learned journals. The archeologist's life turns out to be one bright hour of discovery followed by one hundred mild hours of trying to prove it in print. My wife, who is connected with the excavations of the Athenian Agora, and I enjoy the climate, the people, and the work, but we are not going to be expatriates. Sterling 3d., will not serve in the Greek army.
