of the Family Welfare Association of Scranton, Pennsylvania. A good proportion of my time, the past four years, has been devoted to the development of relief programs for care of the unemployed in Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania. This resulted in the estab- lishment of the Emergency Relief Bureau supported by State and Federal funds. My participation in the development of a large- scale public relief program in the anthracite coal region was absorb- ing not only because of the problem itself, but also because it ne- cessitated a close working relationship between labor and capital; it tied closely to the social and economic problems of the community; it permitted opportunity for study of the numerous economic and social factors lending toward community breakdown. Since Au- gust I, I have been executive director of the Jewish Welfare Society of Philadelphia. This is a privately supported agency interested in developing family life and meeting the service and relief needs of families who cannot be cared for under the vast public relief program. It is a private program, working in cooperation with State and F.E.R.A. enterprises.

GORDON KNOX BELL, JR.

Mailing Address: 154 E. 66th St., New York, N. Y. Occupation: Geology.

In 1931 I had a very interesting trip to South America, where I was nearly overtaken by a revolution. I visited the copper and nitrate developments in the lake region, south of Chile. With the exception of a few short trips to Canada and a six-week jaunt in Europe - mostly in the Tyrol - I have been in New York. Times have not been over propitious (can you believe it?) and even geologists have suffered. Nevertheless, I have been doing interesting and absorbing research work at Columbia University.

HERBERT FRANCIS BOLES

Mailing Address: 30 Westville St., Dorchester, Mass. Occupation: Student.

At the end of the last "spasm" I was engaged in the manufacture of shoe factory supplies. Since then I have disposed of a part of the factory equipment, but I still continue to manufacture some of the items in the line. I entered Medical School in 1932, and I am at present a third-year student. The "silver threads among the gold" which have sneaked into my hair since graduation are a decided advantage in clinical work, as they lend an air of dignity which could not be attained in any other way. My secret ambition is to deliver sextuplets so as to be one up on Dr. Dafoe.

GEORGE ALFRED BROWN

Mailing Address: 7 Ashland St., Melrose Highlands, Mass. Occupation: Music.

During the past four years I have continued my various musical activities, namely: violoncello playing as a soloist and in chamber music; conducting an orchestra; and teaching violoncello, chamber music, and conducting. Occasionally the usual routine is broken, as when, for example, last May I enlisted Arthur Fiedler to be guest conductor so that I might play with my own orchestra, the Melrose Orchestral Association, the Mozart-Cassado Violoncello Concerto in D major. Concerning the present season I quote Olin Downes in the New York Times for December 16, 1934: "The Melrose Or- chestral Association woke up Geraldine Farrar's old home town in Massachusetts last week with Hans Wiener and his dance group in an evening of ballets 'unlike anything ever seen in Melrose.' Conductor George Brown has planned for next March a symphonic night of Respighi's Fountains of Rome, Mozart's Jupiter, and a choral celebration of Bach and Handel." As for the future - Heinrich Gebhard and I are preparing programs of violoncello and piano sonatas for next season.

No, I have not married since the Sexennial Report, as the first cere- mony seems to have been sufficient to take. I still am. One daugh- ter arrived October 5, 1933, but the rest of the children don't seem to have put in an appearance as yet. In 1933 I was lucky enough to be sent by the Peabody Museum, for which I was working, to ex- cavate a cave in northeastern Arizona which had been visited before but never accurately mapped, nor thoroughly tested. The report on that work should be finished by June, 1935, but who knows? Prior to that, I was one of the party that worked in Panama in 1931. In September I came to work at Phillips Academy as an archaeol- ogist and teacher. The teaching was sprung on me when I was in the howling desert of Arizona with no means of preparing the course. Hence I have been one jump ahead of the boys all year. As for the course - perhaps they understand it, but who knows? I left the Deanery in University Hall in the summer of 1931.
