EDGAR DURBIN
Mailing Address: 227 16th St., Denver, Colo. Occupation: Medicine.
The biggest news and the latest - Mary Durbin, born January 6, 1935. Buying cigars almost broke me. I have been sticking on the job here in Denver pretty steadily for over four years; the first two because of an association with another doctor, the last two be- cause I have been on my own and could not afford to miss any practice. Attendance in the out-patient department of the University of Colorado Medical School and hospitals (medical, pediatric, and cardiac clinics) takes about six hours a week the year around, and the meetings of several hospital staffs and two medical clubs de- mand some time. I have held a commission in the Colorado National Guard for four years and a half. At first I served with the Medical Detachment, 157th Infantry. After a year I was trans- ferred to and commanded the Medical Detachment, 117th, Cavalry. At present I am attached to the Medical Detachment, 168th Field Artillery (truck-drawn). Active duty requires two weeks in June every year. All work is not wise nor remunerative, so I relax daily -either at home or at the University Club, or both places. Inasmuch as I plan shortly to move to "bigger and better" offices and take on an added professional overhead, I believe I shall have to forego the Reunion this year. However, I am looking forward to doing some post-graduate work and seeing some football games in Boston very soon.
RICHARD ALEY DURHAM

Since 1926 I have been a member of the faculty of English at the Choate School, in Wallingford, Connecticut. This job has left me little time for anything else, although I have managed to lead a decreasingly active literary life on the side. I have written and published a great deal too much; have been genealogically and theologically and scatologically denounced by Mr. Ezra Pound, characterized as "a cauterising blast of transatlantic hate" by an astonished critic in Cardiff, and shot at by two bandits named Joe in the State of Jalisco. I am happily not married, and not likely to

be; but I sha'n't care to be more definite about this until after our Fiftieth Reunion. Reunions depress me, so I stay away from them, but I have managed to run across an astonishing number of class- mates (most of them, of course, unknown to me) in curious places. I do not mean only the Harvard Club grill. The most charming of all was an encounter, on the bell-platform of the Giralda, with the man who used to sit next to me in Greek G. I have forgotten who it was, but he will remember that hot August afternoon when poor little General Sanjurjo and his army of hoodlum monárquicos were mopping up Seville with handbills and toy speeches; and I shall not forget the surréaliste effect of our discussion of the House Plan, punctuated by vivas and mueras and the breakage of plate-glass in the sunset of the streets below us ... but this is hardly "Personal Narrative." In addition to my work at Choate, I have lectured at various schools and colleges in the neighbourhood, although I have not yet managed to crash the curious gates of Yale. One winter I gave an extension course for Trinity College; an odd affair, whose meeting-place was the Byzantine (or something) Room of the Hartford Y.W.C.A. This was pretty sordid. Less sordid, but infinitely more strange, was a series of four little allocutions that I gave in Spain before a small group of earnest Anarchico-Syndicalists, who wanted to know all about Proletarian Literature in the United States of America. They were beautifully polite, and are mostly all in prison now ... . I have travelled a great deal during summer vacations. I am a member of the Harvard Clubs of Boston, Connecticut, and New Haven. I am a foreign delegate of the Associació Protectora de l'Ensenyança Valenciana, a Catalán Renascence movement centering in València. My hobbies are those of my undergraduate days: Spain, and choral music.

BURRILL FREEDMAN
Mailing Address: 560 W. 113th St., New York, N. Y. Occupation: Research.
My personal narrative can be adequately represented only in terms of idealogical development. The first step was the study, as a socially minded person, of the conflicting forces which have brought about fascism and the threat of war, and mass unemployment and misery on the largest scale in the history at the very period of the greatest productiveness in history. Next came the understanding of this contradiction as the inescapable consequence of the historically outgrown system of relations between production and distribution, namely, the private accumulation by a necessarily limited number of individuals of the overwhelming bulk of the wealth produced by the working population as a whole. The third and present stage is the social-minded participation in the breaking of this
90

contradiction. This means actively taking sides against the re- actionary forces which resist, at all costs to the living standards and cultural possibilities of the working population as a whole, the fact that their rôle on the stage of history is finished. The part which increasing numbers of Harvard men are playing in this struggle is very gratifying. I am a member of the Associated Office and Professional Emergency Employees, and of the Columbia Faculty and Workers Committee.

I can't think of much of moment that has happened to me since our last report. I was then just about starting in the insurance business - but I soon found I didn't like it. The people to whom you can sell insurance are, in my opinion, already badly over- insured as regards their capacity to pay premiums, if not as re- gards their need for insurance. But no one of average circumstances can afford to pay for the amount he needs - and I simply haven't the nerve necessary to try to persuade a man to take more insurance when I am firmly convinced he is already spending too much of
