Report of the Board of Health
To the Honorable Board of Selectmen and the Citizens of the Town of Milford:
Your Board of Health respectfully submits its annual report together with the reports of its various appointees for the year ending December 31, 1944.
The Board of Health organized for the year on March 7, 1944. Dr. Nicholas J. Capece was again elected Chair- man with Harris Tredeau and Frank Calzone the other two members. Louis A. Marino was appointed Secretary. Harris Tredeau was reelected in March for a three year term.
Twenty-four regular meetings, four special meetings and many conferences have been held throughout the year.
Many matters of the Board are expedited by the presence of the secretary of the Board, Mr. Marino, who has cooperated to a point more than is expected of him.
His leave of absence having expired, Charles J. Fer- rante, was re-instated as Plumbing Inspector by the Board and approved by the Department of Civil Service effec- tive as of April 1, 1944.
The number of patients at the Worcester County Sanatorium was much smaller the past year than in previous years. This can be attributed in great measure to the work conducted at the Consultation Chest Clinics held regularly each month at the Health Department rooms and in greater degree to the advanced and im- proved methods medical science has introduced in arrest- ing cases of this nature.
The 1943 State subsidy received this year was One Thousand eight hundred thirty-eight dollars and fifty- six cents ($1838.56).
303
At the March meeting the following appointments were made by the Board of Health: Meat and Provision and Slaughtering Inspectors, Jeremiah Macchi and Dr. Benjamin F. Hartman as assistant; Sanitary Inspector, Walter Chapin; Physician, Dr. Francis H. Lally; Health Nurse, Alice Fitzpatrick; Dentist, Dr. William J. Clancy; Plumbing Inspectors, Charles J. Ferrante and John F. Power as assistant; Burial Agent, Oscar Ayotte.

REPORT OF BOARD OF HEALTH PHYSICIAN
During my examination of the 920 pupils of St. Mary's and Sacred Heart schools, it was gratifying to note that approximately 90% of nose, throat and dental defects had been corrected, and that the personal hygiene of the stu- dents was excellent.
187 pupils were given the usual three injections of toxoid against diphtheria, and 124 vaccinated against small pox.
It is most satisfying to know that an ever increasing number of parents are becoming health conscious, and having the pre-school child immunized privately, thus aiding in the prevention of diphtheria, whooping-cough and measles. All in all, 1944 was a fairly healthful year.
F. H. LALLY, M.D., Physician to Health Board.

To the Honorable Board of Health:
I hereby submit my report as Board of Health Nurse for the year 1944.
PAROCHIAL SCHOOLS
St. Mary's and Sacred Heart:
Total enrollment of both schools 920
All pupils have their eyes and ears tested during the school year.
Dr. Mario Nigro gave free examinations to the pupils of the Sacred Heart schools this year and we take this time to thank him for his kindness.
All pupils are weighted and measured during the school year.
A physical examination was given to all pupils by Dr. Francis Lally, Board of Health Physician, during the school year. At this time notices of the defects are sent to the parents referring them to their family physician.
All pupils of the first four grades are given appoint- ments to visit the school dentist Dr. Clancy if they wish to, and corrections of teeth made by him.
CLINICS
A Tuberculosis clinic was held at the High School at St. Mary's. Mr. Buckner of the Worcester Health District came down and showed a film on Tuberculosis. The majority of the children received the tuberculin test given by Dr. Martin from the State Department. The follow- ing week the tests were read to determine whether they were positive or negative. Out of over 200 children re- ceiving the test, 79 were positive. These children were given X-rays the following week and all the X-ray re- ports were negative for Tuberculosis.

SANITARY INSPECTOR'S REPORT
To the Honorable Board of Health:
Gentlemen:
Following is my report for the year 1944.
We had forty-three complaints of different natures in all parts of the town, all of which were settled to the satis- faction of all concerned. However there were some who required several visits before the nuisances complained of were corrected.
There were twenty-one cases of Scarlet Fever placarded. This is the largest number of cases we have had for several years.
Six "NO DUMPING" signs were put up.
Two stores and one Lunch room were inspected for licenses at the request of the Selectmen.
Made inspections of various clubs, etc. relative to the condition of the toilets.
Five Bake shops were inspected.
In closing I wish to state that the people co-operate in most cases except on some few occasions when we were compelled to make two or three calls before the nuisance was abated. One case in particular we had no other re- course but to bring the offending party to court and after four or five postponements the nuisance was abated by order of the court.
