THE NEW STATE HOUSE,

OR THE STATE HOUSE EXTENSION.

This project was begun in 1888, May 17, by an act taking iand north of the old structure and furthered by an act, May 25, 188S, empowering the Govern- or and Council to report to the next Legislature a pian for the better accom- modation of the State government in the city of Boston. In 1889 an appropri- ation of $2.500.000 was made, and Messrs. John D. Long, Wm. Endicott, Jr., and Benj. D. Whitcomb were appointed commissioners. Messrs. Brigham and Spofford of Boston were appointed architects. Since 1892, Mr. Charles Brig- ham has been sole architect. The builders were the Norcross Brothers of Worcester. The corner-stone was laid December 21, 1889. The first per- manent occupants were the department officers of the Grand Army of the Republic, who entered Feb. 3d, 1894.

The original pian contemplated an edifice extending from Derne street on the north to the old Bulfinch structure, completed in 1798. To join this an arch has been thrown over Mt. Vernon street. Hancock street is on the west and Temple was on the east, though all the buildings between that and Bow- doin street have been removed, thus providing for a State House park. The edifice is built in Colonial style, of yellow brick, with white marble trimmings, having a granite foundation. Of floors, there are the sub-basement, basement 1st, 2d, 3d, 4th and 5th. The extreme length of the structure from Derne street to the Capitol is 401 feet, width 212 feet. The cost of the land was $1.243,225.66; January 1st, 188, the building had cost $3,144,375.92.

In the sub-basement are found the rooms of Major Rufus R. Wade and his State detective force, etc. On reaching the first floor that fact is indicated in numbering the rooms, all of which are variations of 100. On the second floor they pass to 200, etc .; the third to 300, and the 4th to 400, etc.

During the season of 1895 the old Bryant addition was entirely cleared away and the extension was carried close up to the Bulfinch front. In this part will be, when completed, the Memorial hall and rooms supple- mentary to the Senate chamber and Hall of Representatives, besides addi- tionai department and committee rooms. It was completed in 1896. To pro- vide for the completion of Memorial hall, the Legislature of 1896 appropriated $250,000. The Senate occupied the second story of the hall during the session of 1897, a temporary floor having been thrown across for this purpose.

The same Legislature appropriated $375,000 for the renewing and fire- proofing of the oid Bulfinch front. The directing architect was Arthur G. Everett of Boston. Under the direction of Woodbury & Leighton, the work advanced rapidiy, and the structure was ready for occupancy January 1, 1898. The Senate was installed in the old Representative hall, January 5, 1898, and hereafter the room will be known as the Senate chamber.

On the death, in 1894, of Mr. Whitcomb, he was succeeded by C. Everett Clark, and the Hon. John D. Long resigning in 1897, the Hon. Geo. W. Jolin- son was appointed in his place. It is expected that Memorial Hall will be completed in 1899 and that the buildings will then be considered finished. Commissioner Clark died March 20, 1899, and the other two Commission ers resigned in the same month.

Departments and committees of the Legislature are assigned as follows:
