The YEAR BOOK'S record for 1898 closed May 26 of that year, with a state- ment of the first death among Massa- chusetts soldiers and an officer's roster of the regiments, except the fifthi, on a war footing.


In this volume is given in brief the story of each regiment, with such other data as seem pertinent to the record of the Commonwealth. For the lists of officers of different regiments, see YEAR BOOK for 1898.


FIRST HEAVY ARTILLERY.


Having assembled in South Armory, Boston, the regiment marched thence, April 26, to Rowe's wharf, where it took boat for Fort Warren.


May 9, mustered into the United States service, 741 officers and men.


June 1. under command of Lt. Col. C. B. Woodward, Batteries G and L pro- ceeded to Fort Rodman, New Bedford.


June 6, regiment distributed as fol- lows : Battery A, at Nahant: B. New- buryport ; C and D, Fort Pickering, Salem; H. Fort Sewell, Marblehead: K, Stage Fort, Gloucester ; regimental headquarters, Salem.


Sept. 19, regiment rendezvoused, Fra- mingham.


Oct. 5, proceeded to South Armory, Boston, and was furloughed for 30 days.


Nov. 4, reassembled at nearest city armories.


Nov. 14, mustered out.


The only death during the term of service was in Co. F, Henry A. Williams, Oct. 24; hospital, Boston.


SECOND REGIMENT.


This organization reported at Fra- mingham May 3rd. Physical examina- tion of officers and men began the next day and concluded the 10th, on which day the regiment was mustered into the United States service.


May 12, the regiment, 943 strong, took train for the south, via Fall River Line, steamer "Plymouth," reaching Lake- land. Florida, on the 17th.


May 30, proceeded to Tampa, Florida. June 7, broke camp and marched to Port Tampa.


June 14, sailed for Santiago de Cuba, arriving in the offing on the 20th. Land- ing was begun on the 22d at Daiquiri, 18 miles east of the bay of Santiago. E Co. landed first. The 3rd Battalion landed the next day.


June 23, the regiment was at Sib- oney, on the route to Santiago. On the 30th, advance was made upon El Caney.


July 1, battle of El Caney. The loss was: killed, 1 officer, 3 men; mortally wounded, 1 man; wounded, 3 officers, 33 men. Late at night, same date, march was resumed towards San Juan hills, and at 10 A. M. of the 2d, the regiment went into position at the extreme right of the American line. In the afternoon, two men were wounded by sharpshoot-


ers. Later in the evening two more men were wounded, one mortally.


July 4, participated in movement to invest the city of Santiago. From that date to the 14th, was in the trenches.


July 17, city of Santiago surrendered. Aug. 12, marched to Santiago and em- barked on the United States steamer "Mobile" for the United States.


Aug. 19, reached Montauk Point, Long Island, N. Y., and landed the next day, marched to detention camp.


Aug. 20, went to permanent camp: the next day received a furlough of 60 days. Nov. 3, mustered out of the United States service in Springfield.


The total loss of the regiment was : killed or mortally wounded, 9; died of disease, 88.
