PREFACE.

With this issue-No. 5-the MASSACHUSETTS YEAR BOOK adopts new features and becomes the MASSACHUSETTS YEAR BOOK AND BUSINESS DIRECTORY, neces- sitating a doubling in number of pages, and, as we believe, many times that increase in usefulness as a book of reference. Ever since the first number the publishers have felt that to make it satisfactory and complete, it should contain a list of all the business houses in the State; but the undertaking seemed so formidable, and the obstacles so great, that not until the present volume have long-cherished plans been realized. That Massachusetts alone, of all the New England States, should be without a State Business Directory seemed almost incredible, and with a firm belief in the ultimate success and popularity of such a hand-book, the work was begun with earnestness and prosecuted with vigor. The result is before you.

To begin at the very beginning, collect through personal canvass, classify, arrange in alphabetical order and print nearly two hundred thousand names of professional and business firms in three hundred and fifty-three cities and towns, including the great city of Boston, has been no mean task. That it has been faith- fully and conscientiously performed we positively assert. That it is not perfect we admit. That some names may be misspelled, or even overlooked entirely, is doubt- less true. That it will compare favorably with other works of similar nature we feel sure, and invite critical examination. It may be a surprise to many that so much material is contained in so small a volume. To these we would say that it is none the less complete; the type is exceedingly small, though distinct; the paper thin and compact ; a mechanical study of condensation has been made, and useless repetitions have been avoided. Every business house will be found entered under at least one heading, and where necessary under several. Towns and cities are arranged alphabetically, and the entire business interests of each can be seen at a glance. Thus we have practically three hundred and fifty-three directories in one compact volume. All the most valuable features of the old book have been retained, though in still smaller space than before. and we invite a careful perusal of the Table of Contents for matters of general information concerning the Com- monwealth. Especially would we call to notice the historical article on Guberna- torial Elections, by ex-Senator Alfred S. Roe, as a record of rare value to those who follow the political fortunes of the State. The record of Massachusetts volunteers in the late Spanish War is the only complete and trustworthy compila- tion of these events as applied to our own State yet published. As a directory of public officials-National, State, County, City and Town-the YEAR BOOK has always occupied an exclusive field, and in this respect the present volume is even more perfect than before.

An intelligent and systematic daily use of the YEAR BOOK will surely. demon - strate its comprehensive scope and usefulness.
