THE NATIONAL BANKRUPTCY LAW.

THE NATIONAL BANKRUPTCY LAW.

The Bankruptcy Law passed by both houses of the LVth Congress and approved July 1, 1898, provides a complete system for the adminis- tration of the affairs of bankrupts and the distribution of their property. among their creditors, uniform throughout the United States and ad- ministered by the United States courts, in place of the different sys- tems formerly in existence In the va- rious states administered by state courts. In bankruptcy proceedings a bankrupt debtor may turn over all his property to the court to be ad- ministered for the benefit of his ered- itors, and then get a complete dis- charge from his debts. A bankrupt may, of his own motion, offer to sur- render his property to the adminis- tration of the United States court and ask for his discharge in volun- tary bankruptcy, or creditors may apply to the court to compel a bank- rupt to turn over his property to be administered under the act for the benefit of the creditors in voluntary bankruptcy. The bankrupt who has turned over all his property and con- formed to the provisions of the act is entitied to a judgment of court discharging him from any future fia- bility to his creditors.
