REPORT OF BOARD OF

WATER COMMISSIONERS

WATER BOARD, 1895.

EDMUND J. SHATTUCK, Chairman,

MARCUS M. ALDEN, JOHN F. CALLAHAN.

G. A. P. BUCKNAM, Superintendent and Engineer.

REPORT OF THE BOARD OF WATER COMMISSIONERS.

The Board of Water Commissioners hereby present their eleventh annual report, with a detailed statement of the receipts and expenditures, for the year ending December 31, 1895.

At the annual town meeting Marcus M. Alden was re- elected Water Commissioner for the term of three years, and the Board organized with a choice of Edmund J. Shattuck as chairman, and John F. Callahan, clerk.

The past year in this department has been very success- ful, there being more new services put in than in any year since the works were established.

In the fall of 1894 several parties living on Washington Street, east of the John Page estate, and also families living on Walnut Avenue, having made applications that the water mains be extended for their convenience, the Board deemed the extensions of mains on said streets necessary; and thinking it unnecessary to put the town to the extra expense of a special town meeting, they immediately entered upon an agree- ment with Mr. J. T. Langford that he make said extensions, with the understanding that lie should be paid from appropri- ations made at the annual town meeting. At said meeting the money was appropriated, and the extensions have been paid for.

At the last annual town meeting money was appropriated to pay the expenses incurred by private extensions made by HI. M. Plimpton on Foundry Street and by Norwood Association

110

on Highland Avenue, the town having accepted the laying out of said streets.

There has been during the last year an increase in pump- age of over eighteen million gallons of water, and a much larger increase is expected for the ensuing year, which will necessitate, within the course of two or three years, an auxil- iary boiler at the pumping station.

Parties who have bought meters during the past year have received the benefit of a reduction in the price, which we have been able to obtain.

The reservoir is in good condition, no repairs having been required during the year. Hydrants and gate valves have received their usual attention.

The Board recommends the appropriation of the sum of $200 for the painting of the reservoir fence and the build- ings at the pumping station. With these exceptions the plant is in first-class condition.

All money due to this department has been collected up to date.

At a special town meeting called in May the town authorized the Board to issue four per cent. bonds to the amount of $8,000, and it was voted to order the following advertisement inserted in the Norwood Advertiser and Re- vier and the Boston Daily Advertiser : -
