REPORT OF SUPERINTENDENT OF STREETS.
To the Board of Selectmen : -
GENTLEMEN, -I respectfully submit my annual report for the year ending January 31, 1899.
The roads are in fair order, but need constant repairing to keep them so. The bridges are in good repair, with the possible exception of Neponset and Foundry Streets, which may have to be replanked this year. The culverts, "especially where there are catch basins," are in good order, with the exception of the culvert on Washington Street at the Everett estate, which will have to be rebuilt. Also the culvert on Pleasant Street which takes the water from McCarty's and Fuller's meadows. I recom- mend a special appropriation for building this culvert, as the outlet has to be carried a thousand feet or more through Rea's and Fuller's meadows.
I recommend to concrete the sidewalks on Washington Street, . also with connections to the depots wherever they can be put to a permanent grade, also edgestones set where required.
I recommend a certain number of feet on Washington Street to be macadamized each year, finally having a hard and durable road. The cost of building is expensive, but the maintenance is not to be compared with keeeping a gravel road in repair. The five hundred and twenty-five feet in process of construction will cost when completed one thousand dollars.
I recommend, as soon as the town thinks it feasible, the pur- chase of a stone crushing plant.
