Springfield Gas Light Company.


Organized 1848; capital, $500,000. Pres- ident, James M. Thompson; Superintend- ent, George Dwight; Treasurer, J. D. Brewer ; Clerks, J. L. Hallett, Ira B. Allen. Office in Savings Bank block, corner Main and State streets. Thirty miles of street mains have been laid, supplying the city from beyond Mill River to Brightwood, and from the Connecticut River to Lake Como. There are 2,100 consumers of gas, and 500 public lamps. Price $3.00 per 1,000 feet ; five per cent off for prompt payment.


Hampden District Medical Society.


Instituted 1840. Composed of the Fel- lows of the Massachusetts Medical Society, residing in Hampden County. President, Dr. Sanford Lawton, Jr., of Springfield ; Vice-president, Dr. Harlow Gamwell, of Westfield ; Secretary, Treasurer and Libra- rian, Dr. F. W. Chapin, of Springfield. Annual meeting, third Tuesday in April ; also stated meeting, third Tuesday in Oeto- ber ; usually held at the Massasoit House, at 11 A. M. Besides these, bi-monthly meet- ings for seientific improvement, are held at Springfield or elsewhere in the county. The membership is about fifty.


Hacks.


Every hackney carriage is required to have a license from the city the first of April each year, for which $1 is paid. The number of the license must be conspieu- ous on the carriage, and also posted inside, with the owner's name and the rates of fare.


The latter are fixed by law at 40 cents for one adult, 75 cents for two, and 25 cents for each additional person; children between the ages of four and twelve are carried for half fare. These rates are for limits ex- tending south to Mill River, east to Walnut


street, and north to the north line of Cal- houn street, where it intercepts Chestnut street, and thenee west to Connecticut river; and are for day service. Beyond these only reasonable additional charges, not to exceed 20 cents for each quarter of a mile or frac- tion thereof, are allowed to be made.


Each passenger is allowed to carry one trunk, valises, parcels, etc., without charge but for each additional trunk, he shall pay 10 cents if demanded.
