This church was organized with 81 mem- bers. The foundation was laid in the Hope Chapel Mission, established eleven years ago by William Kirkham and Henry S. Lee, and up to the date of its organization it has been under the anspices of the South Congregational church. In November, 1876, the Chapel was removed from Union to State streets. The membership in June, 1878, was 124. The Sunday-school has a membership of 200, with an average attend- ance of 165.

SANFORD STREET CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH (colored ) -Sanford street. Found- ed in 1819. Pulpit supplied by Rev. John II. Docher of Lincoln University, Pa. Preaching every Sabbath at 2 and 7.30 P. M. Conference meeting 10.30 A. M. The dea- cons are George Queen, E. S. Baptist, W. Francis ; Sunday-school superintendent, George Queen. There are about 51 church members ; average congregation over 100. The Sunday-school numbers 95, average attendance 70. It meets at 1 P. M. There is also a prayer-meeting Thursday evening ; ladies' prayer-meeting Tuesday evening at 7.30.


This church was originally Methodist, and the pastors, while it was connected with that denomination, were Revs. Leonard Collins, John N. Mars, George Spiwood, Daniel Vandever, John A. Williams, Sam- nel Gray, Robert R. Morris, William But- ler and James A. Jones. In 1864, the church re-organized as Congregational, and Revs. W. W. Mallory and Samuel Harrison have been the subsequent pastors.


EVANGELICAL CHURCH AT INDIAN OR- CHARD-Rev. James F. Merriam, pastor in charge from February 1, 1877 ; salary, $1,500. The average attendance at church and Sunday-school is about 175 Deacon, Jacob S. Eaton. Sunday school superin- tendent, Dr. S. F. Smith.


Meetings-Sunday, 10.45 A. M., with preaching ; Sunday school at 12 Mr. Even- ing lecture 7.30 o'clock. Prayer-meeting Thursday evening.


The church membership is 52, of whom 18 are non-resident. The average attend- ance at church and Sunday school is abont 150. The house of worship is pleasantly situated upon a hill overlooking the village.

MEMORIAL CHURCH, UNION EVANGELI- CAL-Round Hill, junction of Main, North Main, Bradford and Plainfield streets. Or- ganized October 29, 1865. Rev. W. T. Enstis, pastor ; settled June 2, 1869 ; salary, $8,000; residence north side of Round Hill. Deacons, J. D. Stratton, Joshua Grant, D. J. Bartlett, A. F. Niles. Sunday-school superintendent, C. S. Hurlbut.


Meetings-Sabbath, 10.30 A. M. and 7.30 P. M. in winter, and in summer the second service is at 6 p. M. ; every second Sunday in the month the second service is one of praise. Seats free at evening service on the Sabbath. Sabbath-school at 12 o'clock M. Prayer-meetings, Sunday and Thursday evenings, in the chapel ; young people's meeting on every Monday evening.


The membership is over 300; the average congregation is 600; and the Sabbath-school numbers 405, with an average attendance of 300. The whole district north of the railroad is visited twice a year by the Sun- day-school teachers, and all children not connected with any other Sunday-school invited to attend. The contributions of the Sunday-school average about $4 a session.

diately after morning service. Vacation for minister, six weeks in July and August. An efficient benevolent organization is con- nected with the church, which holds fort- nightly afternoon meetings for charitable work, with evening social receptions during the winter months.


This church was formed of a number of members who left the First church because they held more liberal views than the pas- tor. They were incorporated as the " Third Congregational Society of Springfield." Jonathan Dwight, one of their number, gave to the society a meeting-house, built at his own expense, and of such dimensions and elegance as they directed. Other men- bers subscribed $16,000 as a permanent fund for the support of preaching. The pastors have been Rev. William B. O. Pea- body, Rev. George F. Simmons, Rev. Fran- cis Tiffany and Rev. Charles A. Humphreys.


The society is represented by 225 fami- lies and over 700 parishioners. The church membership is about 200; average congre- gation, 400. The Sunday-school has 140 pupils.

Services-Sunday, 10.30 A. M., 7.80 P. M. The four mission Sunday-schools assemble ut the church with the home school, for a children's service, at Christmas, Easter, and October 1st. Services are held also on All Saints' days, Wednesdays at 10 A. M., and on Friday evenings with lecture at 7.45. During Lent and at some other periods of the year, services are held twice each day. Pews are had by application to the rector or treasurer.


Meetings held in the chapel at the United States Armory, and afterwards at the Town Hall, resulted in the organization of this


church. The rectors since that time have been Rev. Dr. Henry W. Lee, late bishop of Iowa; Rev. Henry W. Adams; Rev. Dr. Abram N. Littlejohn, now bishop of Loug Island ; Rev. Dr. William S. Child ; Rev. Dr. George II. MeKnight and Rev. Dr. Alexander Burgess, now bishop of Quincy.


There are about 415 communicants, and 220 families in the parish. Five Sunday- schools are sustained; one at the church, with 270 members, Horatio W. South- worth,, superintendent, and Bible classes ; St. James's mission Sunday-school, meeting at Gunn's Hall, State street, Mr. South- worth, superintendent ; St. Peter's, meeting at Central street school-house, D. W. Ware, superintendent ; St. John's, J. E. Shipman, superintendent (this Sunday-school is sus- pended for a time) ; and one at the Church of the Good Shepherd, West Springfield, Edmund P. Kendrick, superintendent. The mission Sunday-schools number 250 mem- bers Two sewing-schools are connected with the missions. One of these has ninety scholars.


The corner-stone of a new stone church on Chestnut street, near State street, was laid on November 10, 1874. On the Ist of May, 1876, it was completed with the ex- ception of the tower, at the cost of about $65,000, more than $60,000 of which was subscribed. It was occupied in May, 1876. (The rectory in the rear of the church has been in the use of the rector and his family since April 2, 1875.) The church will ac- commodate about one thousand.


The chapel of the old church is used for lectures and Sunday-school.

PILGRIM BAPTIST CHURCH -- This society is now worshiping in the old South Church building on Bliss street. Organized Octo- ber, 1872. Rev. Peter Smith, pastor ; in- stalled March 3, 1874; salary, $600; resi- dence, 78 Morris street. Deacons, William Clark, James Branch, Albert W. Parker.

A few colored Christians held meetings some three months, in 1870, on Sunday afternoons, at the State Street Baptist church ; thence they removed to institute Hall, organized a Sunday school, and now form probably the largest church of colored people in the city. A division of this society hold meetings at the same hours as the above in Gilmore's block, Main street.


FIRST METHODIST CHURCH - Corner Florence and Hancock streets. Founded in 1815. Rev. Joseph Seott, pastor, resi-

The church membership is 207; average congregation, 300, and 250 attending the Sunday-school. The sum raised for church purposes the past year was $3,000, besides $375 for benevolent purposes. THE CHAPEL OF THE SACRED HEART OH Everett street (founded in 1874) has re- cently been completed and is now occupied. It is the principal off shoot from St. Mi- chael's cathedral. It has a congregation of 4,500 and a Sunday-school of 700, of which N. T. Driscoll is superintendent of the male department, and Miss Ann Neeson of the female department.


The pastor in charge is Rev. J. J. MeDer. mott, salary $600; assistant priest, Rev. James F. Fitzgerald, salary $600. Resi- dence of the clergy, 35 Everett street.

BAPTIST SOCIAL UNION, of Western Massachusetts. This association has for its object the better social acquaintance of the churches of its denomination in its district, and also the help of feeble churches. The officers are, E. F. Foster, president ; II. II. Bowman, secretary and treasurer.


City Choirs.


FIRST CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH .- Di- rector, Amos Whiting ; organist, Miss Lillia Scott ; quartette, soprano, Miss Genevra B. McLean ; contralto, Mrs. Emily C. Beach ; tenor, K. Arthur Dearden ; bass, Frank A. Whiting, with a chorus of 40 voices. The organ, which contains 34 stops, was built by the Hooks of Boston.


OLIVET CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH-Di- rector, C. S. Parkhurst ; organist, Edward HI. Phelps. The choir is composed of a quartette consisting of C. S. Parkhurst, tenor ; Miss Hattie B. Foster, soprano; Miss Rebecca Knight, alto; P. II. M. Brooks, bass ; and is supported by a chorus choir of 8 voices. The organ was constructed by Steer & Turner of Westfield ; it has twenty- eight stops, two manuals and two combina- tion pedals, and cost $3,800.

NORTH CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH-Di- rector and organist, Frederick Zuchtmann ; soprano, Miss Ida Shapleigh; alto, Miss Mary Kendall ; tenor, J. Allen ; baritone, T. Jonas, with a chorus of twenty-five voices. The organ, built by Johnson & Son of Westfield has 12 stops in the great organ, 15 in the swell organ, 4 pedal stops, and 6 mechanical stops, besides 7 combina- tion pedals; whole number of stops, 37. The cost was $5,000.

MEMORIAL CHURCH-Director, Simeon Warner; organist, George Bond; soprano, Mrs. Alice Keith ; alto, Miss Mary J. Bart- lett; tenor, Simeon Warner ; bass, Dwight Clark. This church has the first large Johnson organ erected in Springfield. It has 1,619 pipes, 33 stops, two manuals and two combination pedals. It cost $3,850, and was placed in the church in December, 1868.


EVANGELICAL CHURCH OF INDIAN OR- CHARD-The singing of this church is con- gregational.


SANFORD STREET CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH-Director, I. J. Baptist ; organist, Miss Eva Ross ; sopranos, Miss Nancy Johnson, Mrs. Elizabeth Disney, Miss Etta Purvis ; altos, Mrs. Jane Lawyer, Miss Min- nie Purvis ; tenors, Edw. Montague, I. J. Baptist ; basses, George H. Queen, Carl Talbot. The organ is a reed instrument.


CHURCH OF THE UNITY-Director and organist, Edward HI. Phelps ; soprano, Miss Kate A. Davis of Middletown, Conn. ; alto, Miss Emma M. Bateman ; tenor, Charles Tremaine ; bass, Francis D. Foot. The or- gan of this church is the costliest in the city, the price, inelnding the front, which is very elaborate, being nearly $8,000. It was built by the Hooks of Boston, and set up in the church in January, 1869. There are two mainals, 33 registers, 1,623 pipes, and five combination pedals. This is the only organ in the city blown by water- power.

The organ used at present (having been moved in temporarily from the old church on State street), was one of the earliest built by the llooks of Boston, and dates back to 1835, when it was constructed for St. John's church in Providence, R. I., of which the parish in this city purchased it in 1852. It has two manuals and 24 registers.
