Fire Department.


The working force of the Fire Depart- ment consists of a chief, four assistant engi- neers, and ninety-five officers and members, comprised in three steam fire engine com- panies of fifteen men each, one hook and ladder company of fifteen men, and three hose companies of ten, eleven and fifteen men respectively.


There are three double and two single steam fire engines, two hook and ladder trucks, four two-wheel horse hose carts, one two-wheel hose tender, and four hand hose carriages ; also one chemical fire engine, about 10,800 feet of steamer hose, twelve horses, three wagons, two sleighs, and the fire alarm telegraph.


The department is in excellent condition, and responds promptly to all calls for its services.

The Government own the steamer at the U. S. Armory and pay the company, but their aid is given at all fires, when required. The other fire companies are paid by the city, yearly salaries, as follows : $100 to


each man except at Indian Orchard, where each man has $50. Horses for steamers Nos. 1, 2 and 4, Hose No. 3, and Hook and Ladder No. 1, are owned by the city.


Hydrants.


Three hundred hydrants have been set in the City for the use of the Fire Depart- ment ; twenty-six are private,-six in the City, and twenty at Indian Orchard. They are located as follows :
