JOHN H. BESOZZI

Report of Police Department

January 8, 1959

To the Honorable Board of Selectmen

Town Hall,

Milford, Massachusetts

Gentlemen :-

It is my pleasure to submit the following report of arrests and other duties, performed by your Police Department during 1958.

Sgt. John J. McGrath, Director of the Auxiliary Police, has continued the fine progress with this Unit for the year 1958. They are a most essential unit in an emergency for without their assistance we in the Police Department would be sorely taxed.

139

Sgt. John J. McGrath and Patrolman Joseph E. Arcudi, Jr., were graduated from the Police Officers Training School, sponsored by the Massachusetts Chief's Association and connected with the State Police Training School at Framingham, Mass. Since the School has been operating we have had fourteen patrolmen graduated. We commend the School and hope to continue our policy of sending them to the School.

It is suggested that the Committee appointed by the Moder- ator for new quarters for the Police Department, be continued and that consideration be given to either the Park School or the former Highway Department Building on Spruce Street for conversion into a Police Station.

May we thank your Honorable Board and all Town Departments for the cooperation received during the past year.

Respectfully submitted,

WILLIAM F. FITZPATRICK,

Chief of Police

Report of the Board of Health

To the Honorable Board of Selectmen and the Citizens of the Town of Milford:

Dr. Nicholas J. Capece was re-elected Chairman of the Board for the year at the organization meeting on March 6, 1958. Other members of the Board are Frank Calzone and Harris Tredeau.

The appointments were as follows: Clerk and Agent, Ben- jamin N. Colabello; Nurse, Alice Fitzpatrick; Physician, Eugene E. Allen; Dentist, Dr. Joseph C. MacLellan; Plumbing Inspector, Chas. J. Ferrante; and John F. Power, additional Plumbing Inspector; Burial Agent, Oscar Ayotte; Meat and Slaughtering Inspectors, Benjamin N. Colabello and Philip Roy; Emergency Meat and Slaughtering Inspector, Alexander Iannitelli; Person to Receive and Report Contagious Diseases, Benjamin N. Colabello.

Contract for the collection of garbage was awarded to James Ferrucci for one year for $4,000.00.

Under the new regulations regarding collections of Garbage, beginning January 1, 1954, the collected material must be cooked before feeding to hogs. We are complying with the regulations, but find that the garbage collection costs have risen.

The Rodent control program at the town dump is being car- ried out so that an expert exterminator conducting the work is producing satisfactory results.

The Board of Health is working on the feasibility and advisabil- ity of fluoridation of the local water supply as a means of helping reduce tooth decay. An article will be inserted in the Warrant to determine public sentiment.

With the co-operation of Chris. J. Lynch, and the State Depart- ment the Local Board of Health is bending all efforts to bring up to date the local plumbing laws and regulations.

In regards to the Air Pollution the State Department of Sani- tation is co-operating with us, and the local Industrial and Com- mercial houses, to abate, if not eliminate all air pollution problems.

146
