Three pupils were taken to Middlesex Sanatorium for Chest X-Rays; 3 were taken by their parents; 12 teachers had X-Rays, all negative.
I assisted Dr. Sisson with a few pupil physical examinations. Parents responded 87% to the school request for Family Physician examination of their child if in the 3rd or 6th grade.
I assisted Dr. Farrell with oral examination of each pupil and with dental clinic two half days a week. Dr. Farrell visited three classrooms at Center School and three at Smith School giving an oral talk and showing posters.
I have had many chats with pupils, either in their class room or in my office - topics varied as to age and the need at the moment. Teacher and nurse conferences are many.

BUDGET CHANGES
In the past the school budget has reflected the costs of both elementary and high school education. In the future this budget will reflect only the costs of the elementary school. 1956, how- ever, is a transition year in which part of the high school costs appear in this budget and part in the budget of the Regional High School District. For this reason a detailed description of the major changes is offered.
Tuition is reduced because these costs are transferred to the Regional District after September 1, 1956.
The reduction in salaries under General Control is an account- ing change to conform to our state system of financial reporting. It is caused by transferring salaries of school clerks to Instruction- al Salaries leaving only the salary of the Superintendent and his secretary under General Control Salaries.
In addition to clerk's salaries, the costs of substitute teachers and handwriting instruction are included in the Instructional Salary amount. Of the remainder the salary of the two additional teach- ers employed for the enlarged eighth grade is properly a high school cost since it is an expenditure in lieu of tuition in the Sud- bury-Lincoln eighth-ninth grade exchange. The analysis is further complicated because the school year does not coincide with the budget year. Differences between the 1955 and 1956 budgets are affected by operating policies of three school years, namely 1954-55, 1955-56 and 1956-57. The following table is presented to show the direct comparison between elementary teacher's salaries:

Budget amounts for teacher's salaries are affected by six factors.
(1) Enlarged staff in September, 1955. The two teachers
109
EDUCATION AND RECREATION
who were employed at this time to meet our own elemen- tary needs are paid for the 1955-56 school year. The portion of these salaries due from January 1 to June 30, 1956, is a new item in the 1956 budget. This amount is $5,660.
(2) Replacement. When a teacher leaves, her replacement is seldom employed at exactly the same amount. To re- place nine teachers in September, 1955, contracts were made which resulted in an additional sum in 1956 of $1,007.
(3) Enlarged staff proposed for September, 1956. Because we will graduate two of our own eighth grades and take in three first grades, one teacher is needed. Another is needed to form three sections from the present seventh grade in accordance with established policy. A third is proposed to restore service lost in special fields because of increased enrollments. The salaries of these three from September 1 to December 31, 1956, is a new item in the 1956 budget. This amount is $5,240.
(4) Scheduled increases. If no salary policy changes were made, the existing policy would provide for scheduled raises. While some of these are, in 1956, absorbed in the merit salaries under the new policy, the total is included here in order to present clearly the additional cost of the new policy. These scheduled increases for thirty-one teachers amount to $5,750.
(5) Merit salary policy. The cost in 1956 of this plan is the amount by which the proposed salaries of ten teachers (the first group to be transferred) is greater than the salaries which would have been paid otherwise. This amount is $3,900.
(6) Elimination of optional pay plan. For some time our teachers have had the option of having part of their salary withheld for payment during July and August. With the pro- posed change to a fifty-two week term of employment, this option becomes unnecessary. The amount which was with- held from the salaries of the anticipated career-merit teach- ers from September to December is due them by June 30. It has therefore been included in the 1956 budget and totals $3,572.
