This year it was necessary to make substantial repairs to the care- taker's cottage and to replace a worn-out utility jeep. Also some worth- while works of art became available for purchase to add to the Museum's permanent collection. The costs of these major expenditures were: · Reroofing and equipment, caretaker's cottage and jeep $ 7,482.53

Recommended Budget for 1956 for General Purposes and the Water Department


The Finance Committee recommends that the Town of Lincoln adopt the several separate appropriations for .General Purposes (excluding Water Department) listed by number in the attached · schedule aggregating $559,579. This compares with 1955 appro- priations of $479,030. for similar items and represents an in- crease of $80,549. or approximately 17%. The several depart- ments had for 1955 unexpended appropriations of $12,655. in total.

AN ACT TO PROHIBIT THE DRIVING OF VEHICLES OVER MUNICIPAL FIRE HOSE


1926, Chapter 278


Section 7A. Upon the approach of any fire apparatus which is going to a fire or responding to an alarm, every person driving a vehicle on a way shall immediately drive said vehicle as far as possible toward the right-hand curb or side of said way and shall keep the same at a standstill until such fire apparatus has passed. No person shall drive a vehicle over a hose of a fire department without the consent of a member of such department. No person shall drive a vehicle within three hundred feet of any fire apparatus going to a fire or responding to an alarm, nor drive said vehicle or park or leave the same unattended within six hundred feet of fire or within the fire lines established thereat by the fire depart-


ment. £ Violation of any provision of this section shall be punished by a fine of not more than twenty-five dollars. (Approved April 28, 1926.)


CHAPTER 148 AS AMENDED TO 1949


Section 54


Whoever drops or throws from any vehicle while the same is upon a public or private way running along or near forest land, or, except as permitted by law, drops, throws, deposits, or other- wise places in or upon forest land, any lighted cigarette, cigar, match, live ashes or other flaming or glowing substance or thing which in and of itself is likely to cause a fire, shall be punished by a fine of not more than one hundred dollars or by imprisonment for not more than thirty days.


A PERMIT IS REQUIRED FOR ALL OPEN FIRES.


Inspect and clean oil burners annually.


Keep chimneys clean.


IN CASE OF FIRE: Speak clearly to telephone operator. Give your name, address, type of fire. Always call the Fire Department before attempting to extinguish a fire yourself.


False alarms are punishable by fine, imprisonment, or both.

The Surplus available for appropriation (free cash), certified by the State as of January 1, 1956, as required by law, is $106,361. as compared with a similar figure for last year of $102,970. This committee recommends appropriations from free cash amount- ing to $53,660.50 as shown in our report.


On the basis of the assessed value of real estate and personal property, subject to local taxation on January 1, 1955, of $ 6,253,215., each $6,253. appropriated will have an effect of $1.00 on the tax rate.
