We have granted small sums to several of the districts in excess of the amount apportioned. District 11 is unfortunate, with other districts, in not having the material within its limits to use for repairs, but has to procure and cart it a long distance, which makes the repairs more expensive than it otherwise would. Owing to a heavy rain, the hill at Martin Winsor's in said dis- trict was damaged to such an extent that $99.21 was expended in its repairs. We think that another year it will not require more than the average amount given to other districts to keep it in repair.

REPORT OF OVERSEERS OF THE POOR.
The Overseers of the Poor of the town of Duxbury respectfully submit the following report for the year ending March 15, 1878 :
Captain James Burgess and wife have continued in charge of the Almshouse during the year, at their usual salary-three hun- dred dollars. The care of the inmates has been very satisfac- tory to the Overseers, and we believe their continuance in their positions for the ensuing year will be to the best interests of all concerned. The annexed table will give information in regard to the inmates of the house, but perhaps a few remarks in re- gard to those admitted during the year will not be out of place.
In July, Mrs. William Bowen had a severe attack of rheu- matic fever at her home, and, on statements of her physician and neighbors that it was impossible for her to have proper care and attendance while there, on July 11 the Overseers removed her to the Almshouse where she remained until March 7, when she was discharged at her own request.
During years past the town has given aid to George Stetson and wife. In November last his wife was brought here for burial, and it was thought to be for the interest of the town to retain him here for the present, in order to avoid any further outside help in that direction.

Of the above amount, there has been expended for persons having settlements in other towns, $263.69, leaving the aid fur- nished to persons out of the Almshouse, having settlements in Duxbury, $1,648.53; deduct amount of board of those at Taun- ton Hospital of $626.38, leaves $1,022.15 aid granted those not wholly paupers. The Overseers have continued the usual prac- tice of former Overseers of granting outside aid to those need- ing it whose wants do not exceed the average cost of those in the Almshouse, concluding, in the absence of any definite in- structions from the town, that they prefer this policy to that adopted by many of the surrounding towns, by vote, of not granting aid out of Almshouse, although there may be a small
30
saving to the finances of the town by so doing. The Overseers are giving outside help at this time regularly to six persons and one family, as follows : At Plymouth, Mrs. Edward South- worth-nearly 101 years old-one dollar per week ; Mrs. Horace Wadsworth (bed-ridden), two dollars per week, and Avery Hodges (insane), two dollars per week. At Duxbury, Thomas L. Soule, four dollars per month ; James Randall, six; Mrs. James Southworth, one dollar and twenty-five cents per week, and Mrs. E. G. Hunt and family, house rent, which amounts to fifty dollars per year.
